View Full Version : MAIL SWAP APRIL 2007: mmm...chocolate!

Well, what with Easter right around the corner, I couldn't help but have my thoughts turn to chocolate bunnies, so that's why this month's theme is chocolate. It just had to be done!

If you want to play this month, send me an email (webchyck@comcast.net)with the subject: APRIL SWAP. Please include your name, mailing address and email address (for you veterans, just reply to this thread saying you're participating...I have your info...unless it's changed). You have until midnight Eastern on April 7th to sign up. On the 8th everyone who has registered will receive a list of all the other artists with whom they will be trading. You will then have until April 30th to create, print, and mail your artist trading cards to the other participants. (Keep postal rates in mind before you sign up as you are responsible for mailing the cards yourself. If we have enough participants in a particular country, we can group them together, otherwise it will be an international endeavor.) Each swap group will have no more than 9 participants (including yourself), give or take 6 or so...we sort of adjust it every month! LOL! You may create one ATC based on the theme and replicate it for everyone or you may create nine unique ATCs to send out. You may also use any combination of paper and digital you like for this swap.

If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We do have a lot of information about Artist Trading Cards (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/forum/../articles/article_atc_becky_march2006.htm) in an an ARTicle in our Resource section that might answer any questions you have.

This theme should result in some yummy cards! Can't wait to see 'em!

Bev--there's still plenty of time to sign up for April--c'mon, join us!
As for the backs, you can either use ATC backs stamps {example} (http://www.scrapbookgraphics.com/xcart/product.php?productid=16220&cat=0&page=12), or make something that compliments the front and lists something similar to the example stamps. I've seen quite a variety while trading with these ladies monthly--it's pretty much 'anything goes'

IndyBev, c'mon board! It is fun. Pam's post was useful but do note if you are truly crazy, the backs do not have to match the fronts. This is not good form and people will harass you about signing your name but if you can weather that storm, you will be fine!

1. I have only eaten 3 Caramilks so far. There is no way I am going to be able to manage 13 more ...
2. I was doing a test run and a glue dot strip fell on one of my saved gold foils and totally wrecked it. That would mean 14 more Caramilks ...
3. Sigh, just noticed that one of the saved gold foils has a bit of stuck caramel on it that I can't get off. If it survives the glue pool (see below), I have one and only one gold foil. How do you guys feel about tin foil?

Does everyone else just sit around whacking these things together like peeling potatoes? I tell you, I STRUGGLE. So, after two hours I have backs and fronts printed and cut and 1 almost put together. When I switched from glue dots to glue to adhere the front, the tip of the glue stick fell off and there is a huge pool of glue. I am trying to sop it up. No wonder Van Gogh cut off his ear. The poor guy was probably trying to get his ATCs done.

At this point, I have to go do some digital stuff. I was going to do a Happy Mandela but better wait a few minutes for the serenity to calm the fear and loathing of glue dots and the like.

I normally glue mine together while waiting in the car line to pick kids up from school. I almost always walk up to get them but when I have ATC's to do, I will drive and the teachers always ask why I decided to drive. LOL!

Um ... what's a glue dot anyway?

Nevermore
04-07-2007, 11:29 PM
Oh Robyn this is so what I don't want to hear! In my household, a hush descends. MOMMY IS PUTTING HER CARDS TOGETHER, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOK OUT!

A glue dot is the invention of the devil. It comes in a cardboard box and ostensibly you can pull out the required length of paper tape through a slit in the box. As if. There is a long length of rolled paper tape with glue dots on it, sticky side out. You are supposed to press the "paper tape with glue dot" onto what you want glued and peel back the paper tape leaving a glue dot, sticky side up. In real life, this rarely happens. When you pull the tape, half the dot comes with it. When you cut it with your scissors, they get all glommed up. When you take the tape out of the box it falls on things and sticks itself to them. On the other hand, it does not form large pools of liquid adhesive. It might be time to go back to mod podge, I just got turned off by it's bubbling all over the place. I do use my xyron but can't for this project because it is complicated (for me).

I cannot think of gluing while waiting in a car line. I would end up with my tongue glued to the signal stick and my left cheek adhered to the horn. They would need the Jaws of Life to get me out.

happyrobyn
04-07-2007, 11:47 PM
THE JAWS OF LIFE!!!! You're killing me! Too funny.

To glue mine, I use Zig 2 Way Glue (http://www.save-on-crafts.com/jumtipglupen.html) (with a jumbo tip). Not messy at all ... unless ... you store said glue stick upside down! Which I have done on numerous occasions.

04-08-2007, 12:07 AM
Can't find it in Canada but there is a brand called Aileens available at Michaels which claims to do the same thing ie. be permanent or just sticky. Scratching head and wondering if I can't handle glue if I should really go to a product that is glue plus. I will pick it up, I have to try to get some gold foil because tin foil isn't going to work. Joe told me I should just sacrifice some chocolate bars until I told him I needed 15 more (16 if I make one for me). That got me the raised eyebrow.

04-08-2007, 05:45 AM
Kim, you do my soul good and make me laugh. I agree with you about sticking stuff in the car - NO WAY would I attempt any such feat.

I am certainly not churning my cards out this month, each one is being painstakingly made by hand, all very slightly different. It is so frustrating when one gets almost finished, then, with a twitch of an arm muscle, there is a strong mark across the entire card that cannot be removed. Scrap that card and do another. I have 15 cards finished, but I have made more than that, I just shredded the failures, but I have had so many hand done ATCs from other people, I felt the need to try to do this as well, almost as a way of saying Thanks to everyone. Don't get me wrong, I AM enjoying the manual creation and I'm very surprised that my experiment is actually working. I knkow that you will all appreciate the level of work in them

Well, I was just sitting here patting myself on the back because I actually finished doing my MARCH stained glass ATCs and my April Chocolate ATCs and got them to my post office and had all the stamps affixed to the envelopes and they are gone, gone, gone. Now I read that some of you (who shall remain nameless, Kim and Judy) are now producing ATCs which are hand made. How am I supposed to compete with that, I ask you! I'm having a hard enough time printing my digital ATC and getting the backs on to the tops in the "both up sides meet here" place. I don't know if I am going to be allowed to be in this group anymore with just plain ol' stuff.

And wait until you see my ATC covers. You are going to laugh out loud (except maybe Max would like a couple of them. Let me know, Kim, and I'll send him some.)

Anxiously awaiting all those hand-made works of art. I might even frame them instead of hiding them away in my ATC book and just looking at them by myself.

I do believe you have completely mixed me up with someone else.

I have no CLUE what you mean by hand made. I consider the fact that I have to put a front and back together and do some cutting to TOTALLY QUALIFY as handmade. Are you expecting me to do something on top of that? Are you nuts?

I have had a major disaster with my cards this month  and to make things worse they are all in the mail!!! To cut a long story short I used canvas to print them for the first time and they looked great. Then I used a glue I have never used before - a UHU brand, a good brand, but it has reacted badly with the canvas and the ink from the printer and the cards are ruined :o I know this because I kept one for myself and I found it today when I was looking at the album. I am so upset about this because I spent all Sunday afternoon cutting and gluing them and addressing envelopes etc. Then I posted them on Monday morning. So you will all have to bin them when you get them and I will double up next month. I am really sorry about this.

On a happier note I received 2 lovely cards from Victoria today with a bonus chocolate (made it thru customs woo hoo). Thanks Victoria they are beautiful.

04-18-2007, 12:15 AM
Oh, don't fret please! I had to print out a little apology to stick in mine for messing them up. Look at it this way--you mailed them and then discovered a flaw (which may not be a problem with anybody else's, maybe it is just something in the Australian air or something!) whereas I discovered the flaw and mailed them anyway and have no intention whatsoever of doubling up next time!

I know we all love our swap, I know we all (well, okay, some) angst over them and really want them to be brilliant but they can't always be every time (well, okay, some people's are but we can't just kick them out of the swap can we?).

Mar--I vote as you do :D

Kim, you are definitely being too hard on yourself on the wrapper...we totally get the concept and it's fab! But the real treasure is the card! Free range chocolate certainly must be healthier for us, right? Thanks so much for including me in the swap. Twas not necessary, but it made my day!

So many adjectives are being tossed out there regarding the cards we've received so far {delicious, gorgeous, magical, fabulous, clever, pretty, cool, impressive, etc.}--please reserve 'boring' for mine
I've mailed some out and will do the rest by the weekend...

I am glad people are liking my card in general--but it would have been better if I hadn't mucked it. Anyway, I did use my new punch and that was something, tee hee. Also used that same punch on the fat chunky pages (only one mishap and so far that person hasn't spoken up so I am not going to incriminate myself! Personally, I thought the idea of free range chocolate was inspired but I have been under the undue influence of chickens lately so it may not have been quite as funny as I thought it was. I do know that a friend who saw the fat chunky pages did comment that I seemed to be stuck in a bearded female phase (almost 20 years ago I did an Andy Warhol papier mache bowl for her with swirling Marilyn Monroes all of whom sported facial hair). All by way of my confessing that I do seem to get obsessed. I am not sure how that plays out on those around me (I am afraid to ask) but I personally enjoy my obsessions. They don't irk or disturb me, they aren't horrific manifestations or anything like that. I doubt they will ever drive me to cut off my ear. I like how they pull everything together for me. It is like going through a whole week saying "yes, but what does it mean for chickens?" and it is incredible how many things are relevant for chickens (or blackbirds or facial hair)... I think I would make an excellent insane person. Not that that is on my ten top things to do before I die list. Well, is this an unexpected ramble or what? Sorry, very hungry, bone weary and this was the first post I started. I am doing those long 15 hour days right now and when I get home I tend to disintegrate a bit. I guess I better go spend some time with Max. Poor kid. Who are those idiots who talk about quality time with their kids? Trust me, my kid ain't get any kind of quality at all. Thank goodness he is still at the puppy dog stage where he loves me because it is in the nature of puppy dogs to love and because, of course, I feed him. Better feed myself. I would sign off more later but in context that sounds more threatening than cheery, rotflmao! :)

Kim, I don't know of another person who could have put cutting off one's ear, Marilyn Monroe, chickens, and child rearing all in one paragraph. ROFL Get some food, some rest, and a few hugs from Max and you'll be back to normal in no time.

OK - Here's Australia checking in - this week I received Kim's very interesting card - free range chocolate is different and the wrapper was a fun challenge. Then there was Babe Ruth and the white chocolate LOL .I'm a bit culturally challenged here as I had never heard of a chocolate called Baby Ruth. So clever. Then came the wonderful cards from Mar and Donna. These look so wonderful and even feel good. And then there is Judy's clever twist. With a history lesson to boot and the reverse of yours Judy is so special. I spend as much time looking at the backs as the fronts :)

I am about to post mine in the gallery so you can see what it looked like before the adhesive gremlin got to it. My own fault I think, I found in tiny print on the bottle that it is not suitable for photos. So I have learnt a lesson here.

Yay, treats from the Ontarioians (Ontarioites? Ontarians? Onties?)!

Baby Ruth--I am not one bit surprised at your candybar choice--it's a darling card, and I'm thrilled to know that eating one will give me energy, due to the dextrose--LOL! And that white chocolate--good one ;)

Kim--I felt like Charlie in Willy Wonka opening my chocolate bar with the Golden Ticket! Love the cleverness with the wrapper, as well as the free range--great thinkin'...

Pam! You got it! The slot through which you see the Golden Paper was supposed to be a Willy Wonka thing!!! Clever girl! When no one else said anything I figured I would just keep my mouth shut, lol, because I have said enough about this series. I am not a Wonka fan but in both movies I did get a little stomach action waiting to see the if the ticket was there even if I knew the story inside out.

Now it appears I am going to have to participate in these swaps secretly as Max has taken to taking off with items: viz. Ms. Amigo's Pokeman trading sleeves (both!), the cool little calendar... I have not completed a full room check yet so not sure what else is AWOL

Kim,
I'm so glad Max likes those sleeves! I thought they were so cute and since I couldn't find the plain wappers, I decided to be quirky and use those.

Today I received the Yummy card of Carolyn, I had run to the kitchen because by seeing the card I needed a cup of Latte :D.

The special card of Pam. Pam how many pounds are you grown for making the cards?

And the 'special effect' card of Helen. If you said nothing I really should have asked you, how did you manage it. It seems like such a card that when you move it the print will change.

Ladies I love them all, thank you for this wonderful swap.
