I finally made my purchase. I just spent (gulp) $2200 to become a professional photographer. I purchased the Canon 30D in a package with 3 other lenses, including wide angle, 70-300 mm, and the standard 18-55mm. It also came with a 4 gig compact flash card, tripod, carrying cases, filters, cleaning kit, blah, blah, blad. In addition, I bought an extra battery pack, extra CF card, and a Tamron 24-75 lens with an f2.8 so I can shoot well indoors without flash. (I hate flash, it ruins the mood, KNIM)
I'm soooo excited! Now I must WAIT 7-10 days for all my goodies to arrive. Wah!
Thanks for listening!

That's so exciting. I can't wait until I've saved up enough for an SLR. I miss using real lenses.

Well, it's not all just cause I'm so full of funds. I'm starting a business. I'm hoping to get the job for a wedding on July 3rd, just interviwed with the bride and she was really excited. Crossing my fingers that her mom wants to foot that bill!

Yeah, Lisa, if you know anyone who needs a wonderful photographer (that would be ME) let me know. I'll hook them up!

Definitely! It's so hard to find a good photographer - somebody who has an artistic eye and can do more than just take a picture!

Hey, I was just thinking, I used to work at a place in town that's like a wholesale buying club and they sometimes use local service people too. You'd have to give a pretty good price, (some kind of discount from your usual) but if it's something you'd be interested in, I'll ask if they have a photographer or would want one - not sure when I'll get in there, but I see them from time to time :)

Not sure if that's my bag. I'm planning on advertising out in my area and seeing if I can get a small clientel that way. It's a pretty populace area now and there are no photographers. I'd like to do an "I'll come to you" kind of thing rather than have a studio. I abhor studio photography, it is so bland. Unless it's the studio in your garage type where you through up a sheet and use available light. But thanks for the idea, if I decide to pursue that, I'll let you know.

Yeah, you do have a great area out there :) I agree about studio photography too - I've seen some that's nice and all, but it's always a little too structured for my tastes.

Ursula ... this is such great news! I hope you get so much business you have to turn people away!

Well, I think if I get too much business my DH will be an unhappy guy, so I plan to limit it some. But turning people away would be pretty cool. I just hope I can find people who are into the more natural candid photos instead of the overly posed stuff. I like posing to, but not traditional posing, more fun, funky angles.

Have you ever had your own business before? It's hard but very rewarding and the flexibility is great!!!

Someday I really want to go out on my own - have my own little practice someday. But, I feel like I need to work for someone else for a while and learn the ropes a bit first - otherwise I'd need some mega-malpractice insurance LOL

Ursula, I just remembered that RaggedyAndrea (posts on Scrapartist and sells @ TheDigiChick) has her own photography business - may be a good person to connect with for advice etc.
Sounds like a super fun adventure.
