View Full Version : MAIL SWAP MAY 2007: Games People Play

Well, did everyone get their fill of chocolate last month? What a SWEET swap!
This month we're taking our theme from one of Carolyn's suggestions: Games People Play. Are you into board games, computer games, video games, card games, sport games? All sorts of games could be brought to life in this month's ATC swap. So, are you ready to put your GAME FACE on?
If you want to play this month, send me an email (webchyck@comcast.net)with the subject: MAY SWAP. Please include your name, mailing address and email address (for you veterans, just reply to this thread saying you're participating...I have your info...unless it's changed). You have until midnight Eastern on May 7th to sign up. On the 8th everyone who has registered will receive a list of all the other artists with whom they will be trading. You will then have until May 31st to create, print, and mail your artist trading cards to the other participants. (Keep postal rates in mind before you sign up as you are responsible for mailing the cards yourself. If we have enough participants in a particular country, we can group them together, otherwise it will be an international endeavor.) Each swap group will have no more than 9 participants (including yourself), give or take 6 or so...we sort of adjust it every month! LOL! You may create one ATC based on the theme and replicate it for everyone or you may create nine unique ATCs to send out. You may also use any combination of paper and digital you like for this swap.
If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We do have a lot of information about Artist Trading Cards (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/forum/../articles/article_atc_becky_march2006.htm) in an an ARTicle in our Resource section that might answer any questions you have.
Now, remember play by the rules...all games have rules! No cheating! LOL! (Hey wait...quirks don't play by rules! Scratch that!) Enjoy!

There comes a time in every swap where I decide I need to go to Michaels. This is the time where the digital is done and I am planning the "add-ons". Now, the add-ons are not mandatory. In the normal course, the add-ons are the thing that push me right over the edge. It is not the add-ons themselves. It is adhering the add-ons. I have become a keen observer of adhesives. I am starting to think that I may even be an amateur scientist when it comes to adhesives. If I put my field notes and experiments and observations together I could probably even get published in a trade magazine.
You are probably thinking adhesives are a bit boring but not so! They offer much to ponder. Lately, I have been concerned about the environment and have been wondering about natural adhesives. In example, when Max eats his breakfast in front of the TV and drops a few Cheerios, I have to use a knife to pry them off the floor after a few days. Is is the milk? An interaction between the chemicals in the Cheerio, the milk and the floor finish? Would the bond be even stronger if it was cream or a 4 or 5% milk rather than 2%? Another very strong natural adherent is chewing gum. With the added bonus that it entails using recycled materials. Actually unique in that aspect because it will not work until it has already been used. I wonder if Lysol were sprayed on it if it would kill anything offensive in the saliva (an integral part of used chewing gum) and leave pristine adhesive. I do note that it has amazing colour range which might offer neat scrapping possibilities ie. deliberately leave a bit of the adhesive exposed. That creates its own packaging problems of course.
I have just begun to catalogue the naturally occurring adhesives I see all around me. I do not yet even have a theory for the various characteristics (new bandaids will not stick, used bandaids are not removeable, food bits that cling like barnacles to stove and counter tops but slide right off plates onto floors where they cling like barnacles) I have observed.
Until I have some answers, I will have to support multinational conglomerates and continue to purchase adhesives at Michaels but I do predict the day will come when we will be able to use the materials found in our own homes.

Love the way you think Kim! I look forward to your continued experimentation! I am thinking the drippings of the egg whites that don't make it into the bowl, might also be a good adhesive.

The bottom of the trashcan in my kids' bathroom is extremely sticky! I believe it is a combination of suckers, toothpaste and miscellaneous gross things children throw out. Do we need a new thread on this??!! LOL!

Yes, Kim, you can make glue from milk. I don't know why you'd want to, but you can. :) Here's the recipe: http://www.pslc.ws/macrog/demos/mooglu.htm.
I went to Michaels on Tuesday for glue and glue dots. It cost me $70! Needless to say, I won't be going back for awhile.

Well, I have two things to add. First, I hope against hope everyone in the May swap had "adhesed" their add-ons BEFORE reading Kim's note! Second, I received a hot pink surprise in my mail today -- the envelope for Becky's ATC! Thanks, Becky, for making my day. I won't say more...wouldn't want to spoil anyone's surprise. You have the inauspicious honor of being the first quirk from whom I've received an ATC!

IndyBev, please don't forget I did indicate that Lysol may have to be used. I am actually fairly fastidious. And don't fear, I managed to find yet another adhesive system at Michaels. Hope this works because the only thing left after that (other than organic) will be fat staples. Plus I have now used up the Gift Certificate and am on my own dime after this.

Hi to everyone, the Aussie cards are running a tad late this month as I have been away on hols but back now and I am sitting here addressing envelopes right now. A rainy afternoon and perfect for this job. I will post them all tomorrow so you all should have them in a week :)
Some wonderful cards have arrived here. The first from Bev, wow Bev this one blew my sox off, just so much work and I love it. Then Ruth's very unusual take on Eye Spy. I used to love this game as a kid and I like your meaningful theme. Also great blending. Then Kim's beautiful daisy, just too clever by half Kim and a real flower on the back. Becky's card with a thoughtful quote and great blending was next followed by Victoria's and Denise's stunning collages. BTW Denise I voted for your apple at QOTC. I voted first for the LO that `spoke to me' (that's my policy) and then saw it was yours, great work :)

05-27-2007, 08:05 AM
was taken for a wee journey last week as I had to visit the parents and wanted to show my mom and sister. My sister has always been supportive of my "stuff" and my mother has not and the album didn't change that much. The three of them (mom, sister, sister in law) started a game to try to guess which one was mine (I have them arranged by swap) and failed every time except "Winter" which is a bit of a dead giveaway as it had an entire portion of a Dylan Thomas poem on it. Regardless of its reception, I felt so proud of the album. It is one of my prized possessions.
As an aside, Max STILL laughs every time he sees the White Chocolate card. Just cracks him up.
And this month, what wonderful cards! I have already exclaimed over the Chinese checkers (who hasn't and who wouldn't?) But I haven't burbled yet about the chess piece which has a totally cool quote. I have heard of pyrhhic victories but never heard this one re triumphant defeats. Still pondering, Becky, to try to think of an example.
Ruth, are you politicising our swaps, lol! As soon as I read it, I was throwing out phrases, ... I do love that circled eye.
Dee dee, how riskque! That black ric rac looks absolutely real! As I am writing this, I pulled the card out again to feel to make sure so I didn't make an idiot out of myself. The green paint outline is brilliant too. Could not explain to Max what it meant, especially the quote. Distracted him with the next card
Which was a double sent by Donna. I promptly lied and said she sent him one (idea generated by MizAmigo who did, indeed, send Max his own card). He got it, he likes Clue and the "without a" didn't bother him at all. Made his mom laugh, though!
MizAmigo sent two--one for me and one for Max. So now he thinks he is in line for the odd card and he promptly put them on his bulletin board. He has a small collection now as he asks me for the odd one (he is no flatterer, he only asks me for mine if he likes them. He didn't ask for this month's.) He made me promise to tell you that they are "just great" and "thank you very much". Promise kept.
Sentiment echoed.
He is plauging me to put CS2 on his machine but the truth is I deleted the program and am not sure I can go through all the machinations to get it back. I did it when I was having troubles with CS3 which is a shame because he could have had it. I will {eventually} write to Adobe and find out if there is anything I can do but I suspect not. I suppose the alternative is to buy him an Elements package instead. A fifth of the price and it might be easier? Not sure about that so don't yell at me, I am not suggesting anything, just thinking the price tag suits better. I did give him PSP9 but I forget how PSP works so I can't help him. Getting old can be a terrible thing as far as memory goes. I don't want to waste any of the apparently limited thought I have left on relearning an old program. It would be my hope that Elements had some relationship to PS so not such a strain. He really does want his DAQ name.
Good grief, Carolyn, wherever did you get the eensy A!!! It is wonderful and I like how you put all the games on jigsaw puzzle pieces!

I might try to squish a year in but probably not, I hate to think of "squishing" when it comes to my cards! I don't know if I let people know or not but I did take my album out visiting and it was ooooohhhed and ahhhhhhhed over quite nicely!
Judith, you make me laugh! And I got Bonnie's unbelievably gorgeous chocolate sauce card! I do hope I haven't forgotten to thank anyone or to say how much I enjoy and appreciate every one!
For the past few months I have been thinking I need to take a break from this but I can't do it (not even if the theme is Country Chic, lol) because I am, not to put too fine a point on it, greedy and it would kill me not to get the cards!

Inside was a torn slip of paper describing one of our Quirks and the relationship she developed with her father playing games. But that was it -- no card. Do you think the postman has become jealous of our swaps and has started pilfering our ATCs?

And I neglected to put my return label on it. Thanks for reporting about the mishandled item. Sure hope your postman enjoys it, Donna. This gives me an excuse to redo them anyway, since I did not like what I sent! Sigh...so sorry...

I wonder what they did with it, Pam? And if they went to all the trouble to tape it back up, why didn't they stamp it "damaged in transit?" I know all these machines are supposed to make the post office more efficient, but I seriously have doubts.
Pam, it's really not necessary to redo the card just for me, but thanks for the sweet offer.

Pam, mine got here okay. Very cute, and I really appreciated the sentiment on your slip. Thanks for swaping!

Pam I received your great card today. Australia Post had tampered with it - but apologised to me and resealed it in a special plastic bag!!! I am intrigued now, what have they confiscated?
Judith I also have your very wonderful Mnid Games thank you, now I know what everyone was on about and 2 great cards from Carolyn. Woo Hoo. My album is full of interest and colour.:)

Pam attached a cute little pencil for playing Yahtzee to her card! Did yours arrive or not, Helen?

Alas no , no cute little pencil, looks like it was destroyed/confiscated/nuked :) by Aussie Post. I have never heard of this game, perhaps its only played in North America

My pencil arrived safe and sound. I'm still trying to find a way to fit it into it's pocket in my page protector ... (the game within the game!)

Ya know, my envelope was open from Pam, too. No pencil. I didn't think of it at the time.
Pam, your scaring the post offices, lol. :p

I wonder what the threat of a golf pencil is?! Geez...
I should have packaged them differently perhaps.

I got my PamPiePencil today. I didn't have to pay, but it was marked postage due 17 cents, because it said it was non-machinable mail. Go figure?
I've also received cards from a lot of you others, and this month's are great, as usual. There will be large envelopes due to all of you when I play catch-up shortly. I do promise to make it worth your while. :)

I know Pam's card has made it across the border, as it landed in Kim's mailbox a few days ago, which is only a short two hour drive away from mine - so I am wondering what has happened to it while travelling to this neck of the woods! It is too much for this small town to handle? LOL Hoping to find it intact Monday. :)

Ruth--Max is thrilled. And getting smarter in his old age because he won't let me have the enclosing card. I can't believe you did it! I am going to take a photo and post it. I told him he could not pin it on his bulletin board, we will get a little frame. He said he wasn't going to, he was putting it on the fireplace mantel so everyone could see it and enjoy it. And that is where it is sitting right now. As for the cards, who knows? They disappeared immediately into his pocket and he has put them someplace. He did mention that he needs a binder like mine now because he has a few! He does want to reciprocate so I will have to either find my old PS or take up Victoria's sweet offer to send us PSElements. I will try to do that this weekend but we will see. My plate is a little full right now.

I finally received Pam's game card. It had obviously been roughed up, torn open, message ripped in half and NO pencil! However, my son gave me his golf pencil from a game played on the weekend and it fits perfectly! I also taped the message back together and all is good! Terrific card Pam, and love the sentiment of the message. Thank you! ;)

Wow I can't believe this, I hope you didn't have to pay any extra postage. Here in Aus. they have 2 overseas prices, one for cards and one for letters which is much dearer. So I get the card stamps and hope for the best :) Even so if they take a week to get to the USA why 2 months to get to Canada? A mystery not even known to the P.O.
