View Full Version : MAIL SWAP JUNE 2007: Country Chic

I can't believe it's time to post next month's swap theme already! Where did May go? Ai yi yi! It's not like I was sitting around PLAYING GAMES all month! LOL
This month's theme was suggested in one of our previous month's threads. Not sure who actually came up with this, maybe Kim? But anyway, the theme is Country Chic. Now, that doesn't immediately ring any particular bells for me, but I think if I sit with it for a while, some amazing idea will pop into my heart, and I will show you what country chic means to me. I'm imagining Kim's card will have a chicken on it--a very chic chicken, of course.
So, if you want to play this month, send me an email (webchyck@comcast.net)with the subject: JUNE SWAP. Please include your name, mailing address and email address (for you veterans, just reply to this thread saying you're participating...I have your info...unless it's changed). You have until midnight Eastern on June 7th to sign up. On the 8th everyone who has registered will receive a list of all the other artists with whom they will be trading. You will then have until June 30th to create, print, and mail your artist trading cards to the other participants. (Keep postal rates in mind before you sign up as you are responsible for mailing the cards yourself. If we have enough participants in a particular country, we can group them together, otherwise it will be an international endeavor.) Each swap group will have no more than 9 participants (including yourself), give or take 6 or so...we sort of adjust it every month! LOL! The consensus is large groups rock. You may create one ATC based on the theme and replicate it for everyone or you may create unique ATCs to send out. You may also use any combination of paper and digital you like for this swap.
If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We do have a lot of information about Artist Trading Cards (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/forum/../articles/article_atc_becky_march2006.htm) in an an ARTicle in our Resource section that might answer any questions you have.
I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone interprets Country Chic...whose country? Which part of the country? Indoors, outdoors, upside down? I guess we'll see!

Oh, my, Country Chic is so SERIOUSLY NOT ME, I can't believe you would think I would suggest it. Country Chick, yes, that might be my style but "chic" be it country, urban, foreign whatever is completely and totally alien to me. I wasn't going to play this month but now if I don't play, everyone will think I am pouting because of Country Chic (rotflmbo) so, of course, I MUST play.
Sign me up! My personal goal is not to have a chicken even IMPLIED in this card.

Bother, Blast and likewise, Blow! I have just completed a set of ATC cards for this swap and on every one of them, the back says May. Yes, I know it is May now, and that is when they were made, but it is for the June Swap! I don't feel inclined to change it as my hands have had enough over the last few days, so forgive me, quirkfriends and just enjoy the card when you get it.

Sounds great count me in. I have been living in the country on acreage for over 12 years now, I should have it together. Trouble is I can't put country and chic together LOL. I'm thinking weeds, horse and cow pats, roosters at dawn and earlier, mud, mess, getting caught on barbed wire and on it goes. It's been a lot of fun but chic, no way!! I might have to do an ironic take on this one :)

Kim, I think the missing 3 are UGG :p
Judy, no worries--a minor oversight! Your work is appreciated whther you put a date on there or not ;) Speaking of your work, one of my faves you've done is from the Numbers theme when you made kites out of the number 4

Why, thank you, Pam, that was reminiscent of the time I spent in Pakistan. The missing letters were originally UGG, but I changed them to OTH instead. I don't usually swear, you see. (Now why isn't there an emoticon with a little halo on it?)

Hey, everyone! Haven't been here in a couple of days...so nice to see the gang is not giving up for summer season (or winter as it were).
Oh, Judith, don't you worry about the backs of the cards...if you had decided to re-do them, I would've hopped on a plane to England to kick your butt! LOL!
Yeah, I have no idea how to gel country and chic either! Too bad Michelle (aka plumtuckered) isn't over here, I bet she could come up with something!

I thought I knew what country chic was, and then I started 'researching' it--I checked out two country chic books from the library. After browsing all the photos, I found so many styles--rustic, English, French, seaside, simplistic, Americana, etc., and I didn't see one chicken/rooster anywhere! I wanted the books to inspire me, but they actually just confused me--LOL--I decided country was kind of a casual, eclectic mix of comfortable objects. I dunno. Either way, I've already designed my cards (entirely flat this time--no dimensional objects!)--some are being mailed today and the rest tomorrow.
(Thanks for the list, Becky).

We went to some little roadside shop in hicktown, Texas today. They know the TRUE definition of country chic! I wish I could bottle up the whole store and ship it to you guys. Beds made out of timber, metal armadillos everywhere, a poster of the cowboy's 10 commandments (see below). We bought a cool metal star wall hanging and a "Lone Star" bench. Very rustic, very cool stuff!
And now for those 10 commandments:
1. Just one God.
2. Honor yer Ma & Pa.
3. No telling tales or gossipin’.
4. Git yourself to Sunday meeting.
5. Put nothin’ before God.
6. No foolin’ around with another fellow’s gal.
7. No killin’.
8. Watch yer mouth
9. Don’t take what ain’t yers.
10. Don’t be hankerin’ for yer buddy’s stuff.

I swore I wouldn't use a chicken but I just received my inspiration and tis true, there is a chicken. Not to say it will end up being a chicken but start with a chicken is the marching order. You can't fight City Hall!

I thought I was pretty good in the research field but it wouldn't even dawn on me to research country chic! Pam, I got your card (and the sensual melting Kay chocolate card!) and it is lovely. I also got a package from Helen! Haven't had time to really look at it because Max was casting a rather greedy eye on the horse. "What is this month's theme?" asks he and then tosses off "I don't have any mind game cards." "And you are not getting any" I muttered under my breath and whisked the cards out of sight.
Last month of school madness and renovation and work have derailed setting him up with an Adobe program (he doesn't like PSP) but hopefully summertime will see that done and he can start doing his own cards!

I have a few minutes to be on the computer. We had a scare last week and had to travel from Florida to Maryland. My MIL had heart surgery just a couple of days ago, triple bypass, was in the recovery room 1.5 days and was just moved to ICU. She'll be there then in a regular room. After that she'll be going to Rehab. So, I won't have a lot of time to be on the computer. And we probably won't be home until around June 26.
All that is just my way of letting you know that I most definitely will be late with my Country Chic ATC.
And I'm trying to keep up with my Artist Way weeks; but it's hard!
I didn't realize how much I would miss my cyber family and my digiscrapping and my "play" time on the computer.
Hopefully I can check in later when things settle down a bit.

I could print again but I am trying to chill (in more ways than one!) Mine ended up very plain. A lot of my stuff right now is plain. Must be a need to divest myself of huge piles of emotional detritus. I did enjoy this project, sent my mind off in a direction. Is that mysterious or what?

Don't take my rambling as too serious!
Hey guys, some of you have been sending Max cards. He has not thanked you all yet. I have given him a binder that matches mine with some pages you put the cards into. He kind of bugs me because he already has his index tab labelled! (Mine are still blank). He got me to write out "creative" on a Rolodex and then the guy, lazy!, cut that out and glued it on the tab. It looks totally quirked! He has asked me to print out a larger photograph of his adopted chick sister Minnie for the front so I will get to that.
He is a little confused between DAQ, the Studio Matters Blog and the Studio Crew. When I exclaimed I had no clue why he was getting cards when he didn't do a darn thing he said, "Maybe if you wrote better blog columns, you would get more cards." All by way of reference to the fact that I have never received even one quarter of the comments he got for his first column on snowflakes. Ouch. I would chastise him for being nasty except he isn't--he thinks he is getting these cards because you all admire his art projects and he actually feels sorry for me because I get so few comments. Sigh. I will try to write better columns. Honest.
Speaking of which, a Ramble is due tomorrow so I better get to it. But the pressure!

Judith, he is very pleased indeed! Today he helped me stamp my envelopes. He has done a lot more stamping than I have and he showed me how to set up my stamp cleaning pad. Mind you, his stamping is messier than mine. I don't know how I would do it without him anymore. He doesn't do the digital stuff but he sure helps with the assembly! I am going to take a picture of his Father's Day present-- a cunning stamped box with fitted lid and brownies inside and a matching stamped card. I keep thinking that I never thought my son would get so into this but he takes to it like a duck to water.

and had a hearty laugh at the envelopes. Max and I had such a great time on the front porch putting them together. The nice thing about Max is he isn't too fussy yet so he would do something and say "that is pretty blobby" and then proceed to put it in the "finished" pile. No tossing aside! Made it very relaxing for me, I just let everything go this month. I cannot tell you how many conversations I have had with Max about the accompanying song lyrics. The song intrigues him and irks him simultaneously. But I know it has caught on inside him because I hear him humming and scatting the chorus from time to time.
I don't know why I am always posting here in the wee small hours of Saturday morning! Just had a running peek at the gallery and have promised myself a leisurely stroll through it tomorrow morning. One of the joys of digital: I can look at the pictures in my jammies with a coffee in hand. And why not? That is mostly how I create my own, lol.

And the postcard is just delightful

I love getting mail these days! Today's was chock full of wondrous stuff.
Robyn: You're so good at catching up I got a card for a swap I wasn't even in! (chocolate). All are well worth waiting for...beautifully done! I want to visit the roadside shop - "junkin'" is a favorite hobby of mine!
Dee-Dee: Your little farmer guy is adorable, and I'm STILL trying to figure out how you got the leaves to wrap around to the back of the card.
Helen: What a natty, happy scarecrow, ascot and all!
What fun to spread them all out and see each artist's interpretation of the theme. I'm lovin' the swaps!

Sorry to be so totally MIA these days. Don't know what I've been doing that has taken so much of my time! LOL! Nothing...and Sudoku! I have a ton of people to thank here! Got a cute little scarecrow from down under today (thanks Helen!), and a packet of goodies from my pal Robyn--always sure to bring a smile to my face (thanks, chica!). Loving Ruth's funny card...great play on words and wonderful blending. Got Judy's elegant country chic piece, too! Thanks! And Bev, I think yours is adorable! So thanks all around! And I'm glad to see my pitcher and basin made it safe and sound to the four corners of the world!
Ann...you'd better sign up for a swap one of these days. Seriously! You are a QUIRK, you need to be swapping with us! You know what I should do, girls? I should just put her on the list and when she starts getting cards in the mail, she'll go, "What the heck?" and realize she really WILL have to sign up because it wouldn't be fair to not actually make a TRADE! LOL! (I do so crack myself up sometimes!)

OK, 3 weeks of catching up to do and I love every single ATC that I've received. They were the very first envelopes I opened in that slew of mail I got. So, thank you all very much for making my homecoming so bright and happy.
Becky, your lady in the pitcher is wonderful!
Bev, that country pig is lovely - I adore the "shades".
Judith, I think country chic means simply elegant and I love it!
Pam, your itcher with the flowers and heart is adorable.
Ruth, moo-ving right along with your wonderful cows (and thanks so much for the stamp ATC - what a great surprise to get along with the Country Cows!!!)
Robyn - totally country - wish I could visit that store. I love what you did to show us the treasures that are there.
Helen - Australian Scarecrow Country Chic is divine.
Thank you all!!! What a great way to come back to Quirk.
Now, I'm going to work on my country chic so I can get it sent before June ends (I do have a week to go) and then on to July - wonder what's in store for us then?????

Pouring with rain here today and I headed off to my mailbox with an umbrella and wellies. Well worth it as I found a sweet card from Bev which made me smile and 2 cards from Ruth - sweet dairy cows and those great stamps!
I have been collecting all my stamps and soon I will have enough for a collage for my DATC folder. Thanks everyone :)

Ruth...I'm way behind in thanking you and I can't believe I missed doing so early! Love the misplaced cow and all the wonderful postage stamps.
The mailbox was crowded today....Helen, Denise and multiple Robyns...what crazy fun stuff! Thanks bunches!
I must admit I'm amazed by the wide arrange of ATC's this month...very cool.
I also must say that I have an idea for my card (actually have had it for several weeks - ugh) but just haven't gotten it transfered from my head to the computer..... soon as I can I will get this one banged out.

I haven't finished pawing over what I have so far. Bev, I broke down and gave Max his card. I told him how much I liked it and wham-o gleam in his eyes. "These are trading cards, right?" he said and I said NO. We trade with his Yugioh all the time and I always get creamed. He would want like ten cards for that one and you know what? I don't have a single card I would actually trade. Not one. I may offer him a complete set of mine but as you know, he is very critical and quite smart and will figure that out as "not enough" and "not good enough".
Now, onward to the new stuff! A thick package from Texas, very neat, and now I know what all the "smoking" comments are about!
Deedee, I have your neat little collage with the stolid little boy, just the right amount of gingham! Looks like we have the same rooster stamp!
Helen, your dapper scarecrow made it across many miles to land on my desk, he look so well dressed!
I am afraid my album is full. I have to get another one. I did have a spare one kicking around but gave it to the Wretched Child for his growing collection.

Dee Dee I received your cute card today. So glad people post here or I would not have noticed the leaves wrapping around the card. Wow. So clever and I love the back. I really love it when you all take so much trouble with the backs as I don't file my cards back to back, just so as I can always see them and who made them :)
Oh I should also say that on the back of my cards I used a little line of fabric squares that were made by Carla Gibson. Just a small tribute to her :)

LOL! Normally, I wouldn't say that I am greedy but I guess that is one of the bad things about ATCs--it brings out the covetousness in me. (There should be a layout in here somewhere!) When I show people my album I can never understand why they don't all want to run and join a swap immediately so that they can get some!

Thanks, ladies. I'm glad you liked it, and I'm really sorry it's so late.
Here's the story: I designed and re-designed this card four times because I really wanted it to be good. And then when it was finished, I couldn't get it to print legibly. I tried it on three different printers and it just wouldn't work. So I re-designed it a fifth time with larger type. Then, I wanted to be clever, so I tried to make green tears using Elmers glue and food coloring. It would have worked, too, but I got carried away with the food coloring. The poor girl looked like she had a huge green growth on her cheek. :D So, I finally gave up and mailed them.
I told some friends the other day that I wasn't obsessive, but I may need to retract that.
