View Full Version : Defining MAD...

This section of Digital Art Quirks is reserved for what we refer to as MAD art; an acronym for Memory Art Digital. Everyone is entitled to her/his own interpretation of what defines MAD. But for the purpose of clarification, I am going to tell you what it means to me and you can use this as a guide when creating your own MAD artwork. As a whole, the Digital Art Quirks website encompasses many forms of "alternative" digital art. MAD can include aspects of all types of art but what makes it special is that in memory art, we are using pictures or memorabilia of people we actually have a connection with (as opposed to random vintage images for example). My MAD art for the most part is created using pictures of my ancestors. However, I often create memory art with pictures of myself, my children or simply photos that are meaningful to me. MAD art does not necessarily include a picture of a person. As mentioned previously, personal memorabilia or ephemera can be used as well as other photos that you have taken that create a memory for you.
There is a fine line between MAD art and traditional scrapbooking. Many heritage scrappers are already MAD artists and just don't know it. But cutesy layouts of your children don't qualify. There has to be a quirkiness factor. I am reading a book called Altered Art by Terry Taylor. The book jacket reads "Altered art is simply the result of taking a found object and changing it in some intriguing or surprising way to make an artistic statement of your own." I view MAD art in a similar manner except instead of using a found object, we use a photograph or object with personal meaning and then go on to make an artistic statement with that.
My main goal is to use MAD art to create a legacy for my children. Others create MAD for a variety of reasons including art therapy (to perhaps redefine a troubled childhood) and simple artistic expression (art for the sake of art but created with personal items). Whatever your reasons for creating Memory Art Digital, I look forward to seeing your artwork in the gallery. If you need design ideas, check out our many MAD Missions in the MAD forum. Please don't ever hesitate to contact me if you have any questions: Robyn@RobynEngland.com
One final note: Although the name of this section is Memory Art DIGITAL ... we welcome all forms of memory artwork, even if it is created by non-digital means!

Thank you for the definition and the clarification. As with with the Heritage challenges at SA, I really don't meet the criteria (not said in a whiny or complaining tone, simply an observation. I find definitions helpful and not constraining). In example, my MM#3 is the fetus in Space Odyssey. I assure you I have no personal link with same. MM#2 passes muster as does MM#1 (almost doesn't meet as I think it is cute but y'all said it had enough quirk to perk). So now I will redo a MM#3 or simply relabel my Arrival ATC which qualifies as secret because I have very personal journalling in the background. I love learning about this stuff. I have done a trillion songs for MM#4 but will make sure my layout designated for it has something personal in there.

No worries my friend. I just wanted to give some guidelines so newcomers would understand what MAD is and isn't. No need to re-do or re-post anything!

As the NEED to constrain proportions is to you, so is the need to have everything properly labelled and put in the right place to Raven. I am terribly afraid I can't help it and would like to blame my career but suspect I have been like this since birth. Honestly, I have used approximately six image cataloguing systems! (That is three per year I have been scrapping. Granted, some I used more than once but I still had the horror of retagging everything I own.)

So be it then Raven! I'm happy to give you your needed definition. I understand that we all have certain quirks which we cannot help. I am a perfectionist in my own way. I have been known to move a staple around on a page for hours until it looks just right! It's all about details, isn't it?

Done already. All I know about details is that the devil is in them...

I can't stop laughing about your devil comment! Have you ever seen The Waterboy with Adam Sandler and Kathy Bates? It's one of my favorite movies. Anyway, Kathy Bates is Adam Sandler's Cajun mother and thinks the devil is responsible for everything. She calls football ... foosball and tells her son, "Foosball is da DEVIL!" Said in appropriate Cajun accent. It's hilarious! Details are da DEVIL! ROFL!

No, haven't caught that one yet. I do remember a football movie where the constant punchline was Laces Out (the way you have to kick to make sure it goes: what am I telling you for, you are American...). The mother even makes cookies with Laces Out. The devil is in the detail is a constant refrain in our law office and in said in every tone from despairing lament to harsh chide.
As an aside, I have been roaming the gallery tonight. There is some seriously amazing stuff in there. I mean it, no gushing unconditional support talk from me, some seriously amazing stuff. Made me wish we could have a real life gallery...

Robyn and Raven, you two should have your own show. You are riffing of each other in stunning style, hyperliterate as well as deeply esoteric. I am still just trying to grok the difference between MAD and scrapping. (perhaps I can reread Robyn's eloquent description and decypher better this time.)
You ladies are brilliant, and I enjoyed eavesdropping on this aged conversation. I have very little to add, however you may enjoy this little snip, ala bumpersticker:
"Where am I going? And what am I doing
in this handbasket?"
Blessings, both bright and bemusing,
Laurel

Oh crap! Not another one!!! Kim has been sending me scrambling to dictionary.com for well over a year. Now I'm off to look up esoteric and grok! Although I can muster a guess. As my son tells me, "Just use the context clues, Mom!!" You ladies and your hyper-vocabularies!!! I'd be scared to be locked in a room with you both. I'd be the one in the corner in the fetal position rocking back and forth crying, "No more big words!"
So glad to see you here Laurel!!!! Love the bumper sticker!

Well, Robyn, in small words I'll say THANKS for defining MAD. I just posted a 5-generation family piece. I considered putting it in MAD, but wasn't sure what Memory Art Digital meant, so your post is definitely timely....in fact I may have instigated it (sorry --4 syllables, and I suppose you're in the corner sucking your thumb again)! lol

I think this qualifies as MAD. My great-niece never smiles, she just 'thinks' (at 3). I added a twist of quirk in the layout with the inclusion of some bed hangings from a four-poster which I slept in on Thursday in the Forest of Dean. This is a departure for me, I am not noted for my kiddie layouts, but she is not a typical child, so ...
