We often play with heritage photos around these parts of the digital art world, but have you ever thought about the heritage you are leaving? The legacy? I think specifically about a spiritual legacy in these fast-paced times, these days of materialism and commercialism. Are we passing on the values we want our children and grandchildren to have? Spend some time in your Quirk Journal writing about your spiritual legacy. Who knows...it might turn into a piece of scrapbooking or other art that will remind future generations of what you hoped to share in your lifetime.
I occasionally journal in a book called Reflections from a Mother's Heart--a family legacy for your children. It is from a Christian perspective, but has many wonderful journaling prompts in it:
Were you baptized or dedicated as a baby? If so where and by whom?
When did you first go to church? What are your earliest memories of church?
What kind of prayers did you learn as a child? Who taught you?
Who was the first person to talk to you about God? What effect did this have on you?
It has lifestyle questions, too, that I think help you see what kinds of things your family of origin valued, and gives you an opportunity to see whether or not you still hold to that value:
What chores did you do while growing up? Did you get an allowance? How much was it?
Tell me about your first job.
What were your family finances like growing up?
What did your family like to do on weekends? Describe one particularly memorable event.
Share one of your mother's best recipes or your favorite childhood dish.
Have you ever participated in a rally or demonstration? What was the cause? What were your feelings about it?
As you can see, quite a varied set of questions. There's about 13 questions for each month of the year. So, over 150 prompts. Very useful! I just do a few of them each year, actually, but always enjoy it when I do. And I feel like I will be leaving behind a priceless treasure.
