Is anyone going to work on an art journal in 2008?

Hey Cindy, Welcome to DAQ!!! We are discussing some challenges for 2008 (don't know if you saw them or not); but an art journal sounds interesting. I've been visiting a few blogs whose artists are doing some really great art journals and I would love to try it.

Are you doing one? If so, do you have a plan? Want to tell us how to start, theme, etc.??? I think it would be a great incentive for me.

I started a mixed medium art journal that I'm having fun with. A digital one would be fun too.

but I probably need prodding. I started a small one in 2007 and it has, o, two pages in it so far.

I'm on my 12th journal. They're definitely mixed media, with no special theme except to comment on something happening in my life, a favorite poem or quote, copies of my swap ATCs, comments on politics or current events, art experimentation, collage, ---- see what I mean? --- MIXED media! I've enjoyed them immensely, and hope one day some distant descendant will enjoy having a look at them.

I saved Christmas cards for an art journal yesterday as I cleaned up my holiday items. Does anyone have more suggestions what to put in an art journal?

You could create a journal based on a single theme...the alphabet, a special trip, a crazy topic such as your dog, fairies, eyes.... or you could create entries randomly as inspiration strikes.

Have you been looking at any art journals online? You may want to check out....

http://www.teeshamoore.com/

These are two vary different styles...spray paint vs heavy ink & journaling. There are many more styles being used but that is the fun of art journals because the rule are set by the creator.

Bev, I am overwhelmed by your productivity! And envious. And wish I could read them!

Cindy, I am overwhelmed that you are cleaning up your Christmas stuff. I haven't finished making my Christmas mess yet, never mind cleaning it up!

I am not sure I should be hanging out with overachievers, it hurts my brain, lol!

I am not sure what to do with mine but the first thing I have to do is back off the 'art' part. I think that paralyses me. I need to just concentrate on the journal part. So far, I have a small copy of a layout, a picture of me and Ruth and a full page of angry doodling as I tried to reinstall everything after my hard drive failed. Three pages. Small pages.

I hope this thread stays alive and people keep posting here. I need all this nudging from you all even if it does hurt my brain.

There are as many kinds of art journals as there are artists who make them! It's fun and inspiring to browse through the work of others. These may give you lots of ideas for yours.

Thanks for the links Bev. I have been a Chrysti fan for awhile so it was nice to see her work again.

Thanks for the links to these great journal pages you guys! I'm planning on doing more art journalling this year...I started a digital A to Z journal (http://kateiredale.typepad.com/photos/a_toz_encyclopedia_of_me/index.html) this year and although I get sidetracked often, I'm really enjoying it. I've also started working in mixed media journaling and this is what I'm planning on doing more of this coming year. It's a stretch for me but a lot of fun.

Donna Downy has been playing around with art journals recently too and has made a time lapse video of her process here:

http://donnadowney.typepad.com/simply_me/2007/12/perseverance.html

and here are some of her completed pages:

that this thread is so yanking my chain! All of the links and the conversation are just pulling and tugging at me. I keep coming back to this thread. Seems like I am being directed: you shall make an art journal. Thanks so much, gang.

Well, dear Kim, it's calling to you and yanking your chain because you know you are supposed to DO THIS!!!

I love the different links and I've really been thinking what theme I want to use for my 2008 art journal. That may be my #1 resolution - pick your art journal theme.

And I don't know about you, but I'm even thinking about making the journal - not just buying one. Of course that idea may change when I actually get around to making the journal. I'll let you know how it turns out. I may even take a picture of the process.

we definitely must see pictures! How exciting! Max and I are headed out right now to Michaels. I am going to buy the journal but I will embellish it (haven't figured out that part yet!) I love this part of my life; I have an entire house to move, no clothes to speak of and no food in the house and the only place I am going is to Michaels-- long live the starving artist stereotype, lol. Please let us know if you pick a theme...

Thanks for the links ladies! I am being pulled in the Art Journal direction too. Will have to look around for a decent note book to start with. :)

Ladies,
I'd love to do an DIGITAL art journal. Does anyone want to join me? My goal is to complete xxxx amount of pages and have it put into a book-like Shutterfly.
Perhaps, we can follow a theme or a series of themes-maybe from the Kaleidoscope book? What are your thoughts on creating an art journal-digital or otherwise?

mizamigo

I think that's an excellent idea, Cindy! Great timing, too, since we all probably have a ton of New Year resolutions about creating more art.

I am up and running already, lol! Except I am actually putting mine in a notebook and will hopefully use a lot of mixed media eventually. So far, kind of light on that end but I just started the darn thing. I am posting the pages here (I wnat to go make an album to put them all in). My theme is Portrait of the Artist as an Ersatz Scrapper. I am trying come to grips with scrapping and art. Thought it might make an interesting visual journey. Unfortunately, with hybrid stuff you have to photograph it and then upload it. My photography stinks!

I do hope others join in, it would be fun to watch these journals gets "bulkier"!

I'm working on one right now. I found this awesome little house-shaped album from Bare Elements, so I'm doing an art journal featuring quotes about home.

http://63.210.199.180/04/59/7/45975.jpg.fpx?qlt=80&wid=265&cvt=jpeg

I'm creating the pages digitally, and then I'll mount the completed pages in the journal and add a few embellishments.

I have gotten a bunch of real world art supplies in recent weeks (colored pencils, watercolor crayons, paint, etc.) and I'm really hoping to find more time to do more in my hands-on art journals. And, I'd like to get back to doing more art-journalish digital stuff too, I just haven't been creating much at all lately and I really miss it! I hope you guys will share your pages - maybe a little inspiration will get me going again :)

I have borrowed an idea from Kate and one from Kim to start a hybrid art journal. The idea is to spend 2008 exploring the word "seek".

The book is a little notebook with thin lined paper. To add strength and so I don't have to worry about the acrylics bleeding I have encased a single sheet of notebook paper in cardstock.

Seek page 1 (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=4487)

Hello!! I haven't been here for months--I joined, and never came back.. I have 8 art journals going right now--3 were started for 2008, 5 will be a continuance of 2007.

1.I have one entitled The Notebook--which is strictly paper collage in a World War 2 composition book that I found.
2.One is themed "Childhood".
3.One is drawing in a Moleskine sketchbook (love the paper for drawing!).
4.One is a themed Map book. Every page has a Map, then collage.
5.One is for writing, and doodling (a Moleskine notebook)
6.One is writing, painting, collage, trying new things out--(a regular large sketchbook)
7.One is collages in a Moleskine sketchbook--with thoughts, quotes, journal prompts (this is a sickness--I have an art journal to write down what I will journal about...LOL).
8.One that I just do stuff in..random stuff.

Susan--- You're bookmarked in my favorites! I've been admiring your recent sketches. Have you had formal training? Your journal pages, needless to say are great, as well. Most of the things you mention in all your journals I do in one, but not as well!! I hope you'll stay a while, and share your art with us here at quirks.

Glad you're back. Looking forward to seeing some of your work in the gallery. It doesn't have to be digital. We get excited about anything artsy. :-)

Thank you Indybev, and kygirl!! That's so sweet!

Indy--I have only had 4 years of high school art class--and then I put it down for 25 years to raise a brat child..lol..I just recently committed to drawing every day..even if I don't want to.

Art journaling rocks--though I stink at the written part of them. I really don't have anything much to say on a day to day basis..LOL.:o

I love the colorful little emoticons over there----> they are too cute!!
If anyone needs to know techniques or anything--I freely give that stuff out--just let me know.

Ladies,
I am dying here...well, not literally! I need to do an art journal. I am going to do a digital one. I want to try to create an a la carte page a week. At the end of the year, I will have it put into a shutterfly book.
Does anyone want to join me? Is there a forum where we can post our links to our weekly art journal pages? Does anyone have more suggestions?

Cindy,

There is a gallery design studio titled "Art Journaling". This is were I put my stuff. It looks like there are several digital and digital hybirds started. Why don't you start a new forum thread under "Art Journaling" maybe with the title 52 week challenge? I will join you...won't promise to a total of 52 but will try for most weeks. I beting others will join in. Will this work for you?

Bonnie, that's a great idea. And Cindy, it's real easy to start a new thread in the Art Journaling section. I'll join you since I've been wanting to do one for a while now.
