View Full Version : ATC MAIL SWAP, FEBRUARY 2008: ~ Haiku ~

I think the January theme of Wine Gum threw some of us for a loop, but over all, it was fun wasn't it?! Can't wait to see Kim's take on it :) We are now ready for a new month - and although February is always the shortest month, we have an extra day since it's leap year - it all balances out doesn't it?
The theme this month is HAIKU. Serious or silly, Asian or not, haiku found or your own written piece - it's up to you! Haiku is commonly 17 syllables (3 lines of 5, 7, 5) and includes a reference to season or nature, but you can read more about Haiku in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku) and decide for yourself how to approach it.

If you want to play this month, send me an email (pkeflin@hotmail.com)with the subject: FEBRUARY ATC SWAP. Please include your name, mailing address and email address (for you veterans, just reply to this thread saying you're participating...I have your info...unless it's changed). You have until midnight Eastern on February 7th to sign up. On the 8th everyone who has registered will receive a list of all the other artists with whom they will be trading. You will then have until February 29th (um, or later!) to create, print, and mail your artist trading cards to the other participants. (Keep postal rates in mind before you sign up as you are responsible for mailing the cards yourself. If we have enough participants in a particular country, we can group them together, otherwise it will be an international endeavor.) Each swap group will have no more than...um...we don't know the upper limit yet! LOL! We like big groups and have been hovering around 8-12 participants each month. You may create one ATC based on the theme and replicate it for everyone or you may create unique ATCs to send out. You may also use any combination of paper and digital you like for this swap.
If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We do have a lot of information about Artist Trading Cards (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/articles/article_atc_becky_march2006.htm) in an ARTicle in our Resource section that might answer any questions you have.
Looking forward to another swap with you all!! Okay, who's in?

Because I obviously had nothing better to do, I created a haiku to ATC swaps and, forgive me, posted it in the ATC gallery.

I am just too disorganised to participate in the swaps but I love "having a go" as we say here in Oz.

I'm considering having an ATC swap where everone sends their front/backs of their cards to me digitally, then I'll zip a file of the collection to all participants, and everyone will be surprised at the same time. And those that want to print them out, can!

Pam this is a good idea too - it costs me heaps to mail cards (although its worth it) but maybe using your idea on alternate months would be good :)

I like getting (and giving) cards with a hybrid twist, as you will see from my wine gums, so I wouldn't want every swap to be digital only, please.
I love the idea of haiku ATCs, I have already done some. One is in my gallery

I like wonderful surprises in the mail myself, so I wouldn't want all to be digital either :) I do think a digital one now and then would be good, as more people might be willing to participate. I'm glad you like the Haiku idea Judy - does that mean you're in for the month?

I thought one up! I love it, it is perfect for the swap and has several meanings in the artwork. I am thrilled by what I have done, simple, but just spot on as far as I am concerned.

I am definitely in! I didn't want to say yes until I got my January cards done but I am pleased to say they are sleeved and just waiting to be mailed which I will do from work tomorrow.
Sorry if my theme threw people off--I had a tough time with it too but I can honestly say I loved doing the research!
As for a digital swap, I have to say that I am not sure if that really thrills me. It is tough enough with the Dexxies and I have not printed out many of the series as is. Maybe now that I have a couple of digital frames I could rig it so that they form a screen show. But just having them on my hard drive doesn't really show them or anything. Not trying to be negative--I just like the tactile hybrid nature of real card swaps. I do know that postage can be a drag. Maybe we could consider sending them two months at a time since it would not cost any extra to send two? Regardless, it matters not if I do the digital ones, DAQ should have something for everyone. But please, don't stop the real life swaps! My mail has never been the same since I started doing this and I don't want to go back to bills, junk mail (except the quirk kind ;) and coupons.

I think I'm opting out again this month, guys. I'm committed to a couple of other things, and my ATC mojo seems to have "gone south" for a bit. Maybe I'll get my second wind by next month!

I thought this one was going to be a bust!!!! But, somehow last evening, I came up with my "haiku" and today I did my ATC. Printed, adhered, and put on the glitter (I am the glitter queen! Note to self - change title...) and just waiting for them to dry so I can put them in the sleves and mail out.
Oh hello Mojo! Welcome back!!!!!

Yes, the Haiku ATCs are in the mail. I was slightly disappointed because I put some words on and they looked good on screen; but printed, you can't really see them. Oh well. I'll have to put it in the gallery after they get to their destinations.

I posted mine on Wednesday - these take about a week to the USA and a tad longer to Canada and UK I think.
I am quite excited as our local Art Society (of which I am a member) has started doing monthly ATC Swaps. Most don't do digital, they create approx. 9 originals each month and they are all really good artists :) This month the theme is `Portraits' so wish me luck. I am going to have to buy a lot more pages to display now about 20 ATC's arriving each month Woo Hoo :D
