Would anyone be interested in doing a moleskine round robin?
Moleskine books available here in UK
http://www.mojolondon.co.uk/stationery/moleskine/pocket/moleskine_japanesealbum_pocket.htm
or from Amazon.com in other countries
This is the idea, copied verbatim from a flickr group. I think we quirks would do well at this.
1. The artists start with the Japanese fold Moleskine - Name, address, email address written in book.
2. Each artist gets 1 month to make a sketchbook entry, and mail it to the next person.
3. Each artist will do 2-3 pages each round.
4. Artists are encouraged to interact with other images in the book. Please be respectful.
5. When the book is full, when one side of the unfolded book is filled, the book will be sent back to its original owner. That artist may continue by buying a new book and sending it to the next person.
6. If a person decides not to continue, she will simply keep her book when it comes back to her. She should email all of the participants to say she is not going to continue. We will decide, then, if we want to find a new person.
7. Please communicate regularly via email. Let each person know that you have received/sent the book. The goal is to have a dialogue. Any comments and questions are welcome.
More information on the original group can be found here.
Please visit the Flickr-group here (http://www.flickr.com/groups/moly_x).

I would be interested Judith.
Question: "book is full, when one side of the unfolded book is filled" - What does this mean?

ok, here is a picture of a Japanese Moleskin (http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Japanese-Pocket-Notebooks-Calendars/dp/1601100043). Click on the other view to see the pages.
So guess instructions are tell us to only illustrate one side of the accordian. ?? If you only had a few people per trading group that would make sense but I would think if it was a bigger group and you wanted traders to create 2 or 3 pages then you would want to do both sides. Ok Judith what am I missing?

Don't you just love Moleskine journals? The paper is fabulous. At any other time, I would jump on this project, but right now, I'm running behind on everything. It sounds like such a fun project.

You aren't missing anything, I think that there are quite a lot of small pages in an accordion album like this, so it would be difficult to get enough people to complete both sides, though if we are having fun, we can send it round again.
I shall leave you all to think about it. If we get a group of 5 or 6 people, we could make a start. How about leaving the sign up open until the end of the month, so people get to see the challenge and maybe think they would like to join in. If you want to make a theme for your album you can, or you could leave it up to individuals to see what they come up with

I believe our Barnes and Nobel bookstore has these in the journal section - so I'm going to take a look at them and see what they are. This does look like an interesting round robin art journal exchange/swap/"thing-y".

Would each person choose a theme for their own book?

Victoria...barnes & noble does carry although not sure if the have the accordian type and LOL...I have a coupon...yippy!
Pam...I believe Judith was recommending that it would be up to the book owner if there was a theme.
I'm crazy...another deadline...but so excited to undertake this quirky challenge. When I first started exploring art journals several years ago I was captivated by the concept of a traveling journal.

Hmmmm....I'm thinking about this...it's very tempting Judy!
And Bonnie, I've been facinated with the idea of a traveling journal too.
I'm not sure I understand completely all "the how's" but this is what I think it's about...
...it's a 'buy hand' rather than digtial book.
...only one side of the page is worked on.
...we would each do 2 or 3 pages in the time period of a month and mail it on.
is this the gist of it?
graybonnie
03-09-2008, 10:10 AM
Kate...I hoping it is a hybird of sorts. Maybe collaging (but thin layers - too heavy would I think cause issues with the folds?) with some of our digital creations? We'll have to see what Judith has in mind. Glad you can play.
mizamigo
03-09-2008, 11:41 AM
I haven't been able to check out the moleskin books at B&N; but even if I have to get one "online", I'll play if Judith sets out all the rules so I know what I'm supposed to do.
Pixeldigger
03-09-2008, 06:30 PM
Kate is right. It is not a digital format, but you could use a digital image and paste it in like a collage. Drawing, collage, paints, mixed media, image transfer - anything goes. As for format and rules, no set anything. I am not going to tell you what size book to get; what is available in the UK is not necessarily what is available in the US or Australia, Holland or anywhere else. One side only if that is what you want, but if you want double sided artistry, then keep sending the book round until it is full.
This is the book I have ordered:
album (http://www.mojolondon.co.uk/stationery/moleskine/pocket/moleskine_japanesealbum_pocket.htm)
This is Quirkland - Quirk rules only apply.
What you have to do:
1. Tell me definitely if you want to join in
2. Get a book
3. decide if you want a theme or if you want people to just see what comes next. Each artist takes into account the previous pages for inspiration.
4. Put your name and address in your book and do the first 2-3 page artwork.
5. Send the book to the next artist in the list.

Judith, when were you thinking for a start day? I'm going on a 10 day cruise, so I'm not going to be here for those days - and of course, we need to start our own books then send them out.
I want to do this one so I guess you can count me in as long as I'll be in the "safe" range for the cruise.

I would like to as well, please. Guess we still need to figure out a book acquiring deadline, a shipping deadline, and the frequency of mailing to the next artist... (don't call them rules, Judy, just 'guidelines'!)
Instead of looking at a bookstore, I looked at a local art supply store (http://www.meininger.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=6267) (online) and they indicate they have all the varieties of MS's. See if your town/city has a similar store! Otherwise, online may be the best way to go.

Start date - the first of April. You need to acquire your books by then so you can start your art.
Post your books off to the next artist about a week before the first of May, which shouldn't overload anyone as it is only one book per month
Post succeeding books off when you have done your art, at the latest a week before the end of each month.

I sat down to plan my moleskine work and it just took over. It isn't what I originally planned, but it turned into a 4 page spread which should be looked at in its entirety. It shows how my brain works, ordered and logical, then another theme comes in and interrupts my train of thought, then reorganises itself into something completely different. It really illustrates itself - weird.

The first mark is the hardest. Once I started, it just evolved in front of me - and not at all what I had planned, either. I had meant to do some music paper collage with notes and wings (On wings of song), but it ended up mainly stick-ons. It is just weird how that happened.

Judith...a little English book found it's way to my mailbox today. Happy happy joy joy :D
What cool foils you have found! Love their metallic glow. Really like the large gold tulip foil. I'm taken by the simplistic quality that all cream background gives to your pages...it is just prefect. Very breeze sailing feel.
One concern...did you have four metal corner pieces on the front cover? There are only three and I can't find anything loose in the package. Where did you find these because they are wonderful?
I hope to create you something special. Will wrap and mail securely. By the way your package was in great shape when it arrived.

Did I ever laugh when I realized what I'd done...it just fit the kind of month I was having!! Ruth cheered me up by telling me it just made it all the more "quirky". (Love ya Ruth!):)

I have a question regarding the next shipment - will the 'send to' list be mixed up each month, or will I always send the one I have on to Ruth as I am this first round? And will my art always follow Bonnie's, who will be sending one to me this first round?
Pixeldigger
05-08-2008, 01:12 PM
Once everyone has done a piece of art in each book, we can swap the order for the next lot of art. I don't think that a single set of artworks is going to fill up a book. If we swap the order at every changeover, it will end up being complicated.
What do you think? Or would you like a random change each time? All rules are flexible.
mizamigo
05-09-2008, 12:15 PM
I think it makes sense to just complete your piece of art in the book and send it on to the next person on the list. That way, you get art from everyone on the list and the books rotate. It's "simple" and easy for me, that's why I like it.
PamPie
05-09-2008, 12:33 PM
We would get art from everyone on the list regardless of how it rotates, but I agree that sending to the same person each time simplifies it - my brain could keep track better most likely. Between ATC's and moleskine, I just about have Ruth's address memorized!

I had hoped to get it mailed out a few days ago but had company all weekend and was also looking after my grandson, so it's still sitting on my desk.
My thought's on the rotation of the book is that a month is a bit short. Six weeks would be much better for me...especially considering international shipping. For those who are working, it's even more difficult. We don't want anyone getting stressed out about it!

I've bought a new moleskin (since I sent my teeny tiny one to Sherrie) and I'll send that one as well as Kate's to Judith. Now Judith will have lots to work on until the next rotation. How is that?

Aw, V - sorry you had to spend money on another, but I think in this case it may be the right thing to do and move on - and it'll perk Judy up a bit, too!

Pam, The first moleskin I got was the 3 1/2 x 5" book, so this book is a nicer bigger book. My new book and Kate's book are now on their way to Judith.
Have fun with them Judith.

The books have arrived with me. Sherrie is now officially off the list as she hasn't replied to me.
I have started on Victoria's art and it just needs some final touches to be done and I have made a start on the book of words by deciding what I want to do, now all I have to do is find out HOW to do it.
This is feeling like fun again.

Pam... I'm headed for the post office today to mail you Judith's book. Sorry to have taken so long but I'm happy with my results.
Oh Judith... I took the liberty to reattach your metal corners. Removed the dots and applied a thin layer of Crafter's Pick The Ultimate glue. Got a nice solid bond.

Well, I have been exploring some new technics and I couldn't be happier!!!! Thanks all to little Victoria in sunny Flordia.

Hi fellow Moleskiner's!
I've been right out of the loop here at DAQ for the past month but I did get Pam's book finished (or at least my pages!) and it will be in the mail tomorrow. I'm off for a week of camping with the grandkids and at least 5 of those days will be without internet, computer, cell phone and oh yeah, electricity, showers and flush toilets! Yikes!
It sounds like everyone is in holiday mode...hope you're all enjoying a great summer! :D

Bonnie, I'm so glad that I could help encourage you to try some new techniques (I really had no idea of the quality of moleskin pages in the book I got.).
Kate, I got the book you sent me (Pam's). So now I have something new to work on (yeah!!!).
Judy, I'm mailing out the Ruth's moleskin book to you today, so be on the lookout.
I really love seeing the art as it progresses from one artist to the next. These moleskins are absolute works of art and I love the themes. I'm so glad I joined in on this round robin.

I was wondering when we are supposed to forward the July books now that August is half over? Any suggestions? If it's soon, I'll be able to finish the book I'm working on and ship it off to Judith - Judith are you ready for the next book????

I think there was a bit of a late summer slowdown with the moleskins Victoria. I recieved one from Ruth about 10 days ago but I've been away, had company for a month and have been sick for the last week so it hasn't yet made it to the top of my priority list!
As soon as I'm back on my game I'll get it sent off to you Victoria. Sorry for the delay.

I agree with what Kate said...a bit of a summer slow down for sure. Not an intentional procrastination, but a matter of time. From what I have seen within the pages of the moleskines that have passed through my hands, it will be well worth the wait when your moleskine has made it full circle and arrives in your mailbox. That is the way I am looking at it anyway. We are a good group of committed artists and it will get done. We are just not good with sticking to the schedule...you can't rush art ;) For me, each book that arrives requires time to think and ponder, and each book directs the inspiration to create. Inspiration is not immediate for me and I find myself opening and closing the book often and playing with images in my head and on paper before I get down to the nitty gritty. It is a wonderful project and I am happy to be a participant.
Kate, I hope you are feeling better ;)

Victoria, I wanted to let you know that I mailed the journal to you on Saturday...you should be getting it sometime this week (I hope!). I find it amazing how I can sit with it for several days with no inspiration at all and then all of a sudden I'll read something or see something that sets everything in motion. It's like a wave that I just ride the crest of!
I'm really sorry that there was such a delay with this but it's off and running now! Have fun with it.

Pam, that would be wonderful if you could ask her. I do believe everyone is still doing the moleskins; but I thought Judy might be ill (as she was a while ago). And I know I've been crazy busy with the holidays, so no rush; I just wanted to get my completed book on its way.

My thought for my own, when it arrives 'home', was to have my mother (an on again/off again DAQ-er) put her touch in the book, and then also ask a few other non-DAQers if they would add to the theme :) Depending of space, of course. Then I might do one more piece of my own to wrap finish it off, then sit back an enjoy the travels of the moleskine!

Hi fellow moleskinners! As Ruth has said, I'm away until the middle of March so there will be a little hold up there until I return.
I think I will probably end my portion of the travelling journal when it gets back to me as there's a possibility that I may be of "no fixed address" for a large part of the year. I'd just hate to make the commitment and then not be able to follow through on it. It's been a lot of fun and I've really enjoyed seeing everyone's work as the journals have passed through my hands!:)

Victoria, I have your book and have not yet created in it. I had a major set back when my home was robbed 2 weeks ago. They took my computer among many other things. It is taking time to replace the stolen items and to recover from this invasion emotionally. I am not sure where I am creatively as at the moment I have no desire. If you would like me to return your book without creating in it I will. Just let me know.

Oh my gosh, Ruth, I had no idea! I'm so sorry you have to go through such a terrible event. I think the emotional violation would be horrible.
Please don't even think about the book now. Take care of yourself, your home, your family.
I just hadn't heard anything for a long while and now it seems so inconsequential.
I hope you can get a new computer and some creative inspiration soon. Please let me know how you are doing. My best wishes and thoughts go to out to you.

Ruth, that is awful. I hope you recover soon, but being burgled is such an invasion of privacy it takes a long time for your emotions to stabilise. I know, I had my shed burgled once and that affected me, it must be 100 times worse to have someone actually walking round your house, taking your things and looking into private places. When I was robbed of my handbag, I felt violated. It is horrid and you have my heartfelt sympathy

Hi everyone,
I've finished Judy's book but I've lost my list of address' for the participants in the Moleskine project. I think it either got packed away in the move(s) or lost when I had to change email servers.
So...the next stop for this book is with Victoria. Could you please email your address Victoria and I'll send it off right away. Thanks!:)
