What exactly is an "Art Journaling Challenge"? It sounds like fun and I would like to play. Is there a description in the forum that I missed. Good quotes by the way.

So, an art journal is whatever you want it to be, if you say it is an art journal?

I had really wanted to do the summer's end "challenge" but couldn't find the challenge in the challenges section. I am such a dork. I've been here a year and thought I new the scoop. OK, now I have a new project to ponder.

Blessings,

L

BTW, if you have any wisdom you would like to share about art journaling, I would love to hear it.

Art Journals are "journals" of your art-whether it is digital, paint, crayons, mixed media, ect..... it can be collage, words, photo-whatever comes through you!

Here are a few links to give you a better sense of creating art journaling.

Just want to tell you that even though I haven't added to my art journal in a kazillion weeks, I have been making pieces for it and am going to throw them in it. I refused to pack it, it has been sitting open on top of my desk through all of the moves. Honestly, that would normally make me wanna throw it in the garbage but I am standing firm on this. Want to thank you for pushing this, it helps keep me motivated and on track.

Kimmie, I have been playing along, just not always on topic. I have my journal pages so far loaded in an album in my gallery called Portrait of the Artist as an Ersatz Scrapper. Long story! (do I have any other kind?)

Glad to see everyone so fired up! Quirks rule.

What is the link for the site?

it is just here at DAQ. You can chose to group your layouts in albums. Most people don't but I do because I do so many series or projects. So, if you go to my photos and look above you will see little thumbnails of my albums. Hmm, let me see if I can link it.

This is my home page (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=47) and the albums are up above. I don't have half as many here as I do at SBG. I better get cracking, lol! Tell us about your art journal?
Mine is just a decision I made in the New Year to call myself an artist. What a lot of blether I did about that. But that is why I use the pretentious word "studio" for my home office instead of well, home office!

If I took photos instead of uploading the layouts, you would see the mixed media part of the journal but my photography is rotten (see photo of front cover).

I think it is a common phenomenon that we are afraid to be messy etc. Pretty much a girl stereotype. I have umpteen beautiful empty books, journals etcetera that I can't touch because I won't be perfect. Hard to overcome that. For me, anyway.

I have had my Art Journal for 2 months. I was TOLD by a friend in Texas (Kristin) that she wanted me to purchase a Art Journal and join her in this form of expression. We send each other links from youtv...challenge each other.

My favorite part of Art Journals is the mess. I love ink and blending them to create a textures and combination of colors.

I thought that I was understanding an art journal. But it is something that you buy? I think the confusion may be that I am purely digital at this point. I have dabbled in analog-pencil to paper kind of stuff, but I have never, EVER felt good about making art until I came here. So, whadaya mean "make a mess"??? Again, I say, I am so confused.

<gothmama goes away, grumbling...>

And Kim, I am glad you are doing so well with the title of artist. You richly deserve it and it fits you fine.

Blessings,

Laurel

Laurel, my bright blessing, be not confused. There are as many types of art journals as there are art journalists. The art teacher where my niece is a student counselor mentioned altered books to my niece 3 years ago, and she passed it along to our literary family as a suggestion. I couldn't bring myself to deface a book, so picked up a blank page journal at Barnes & Noble, and what a new world opened for me! I am now on my 13th journal. Sometimes the pages are purely digital and glued in with my trusty glue stick (UHF). If I go to a movie or the theater, I save bits of programs or tickets etc. and they are glued to pages with my thoughts on the production. A page may contain a found poem or an original one, illustrated with acrylics, water color, chalk ink, or whatever suits my fancy. Some pages are vintage, with my memories of a long-gone ancestor or family happening. Some contain photographs of family happenings, with journal notes regarding same. Some pages are political rants, or comments on current events. I like to think one day many years from now, a descendant will come across my journals, sit down on a rainy day and spend some time learning about life and times in my era.

There's a Yahoo group who use composition books (those speckled cover books) for their journals, one that call their journals glue books (which are mostly quirky collage), and many make their own journals! Some use their journals just for recording art experiments in acrylics, watercolor, oil crayons, etc etc etc. The point is, pick up any sort of journal at the bookstore, and do your own thing!

And, by the way, Cindy, those last 3 quotes were stunners!

Your art journal cam be digital, paper, metal, wood, ect.... It depends on what you want to do. I am a digital art journaler. I can't stand the mess.

Your art journal and pages can be whatever size you choose. If you choose to have it printed through a photo book printer, you may want to keep in mind the specifications from the printer. I print my own pages and can reduce to 8.5x11 or less.

Basically, you create art how you want and when you want. You use your own base-digi, paper, metal, wood, ect......and lay on it what you like. There are no rules with art journaling.

Surrounded by plumbers and builders, and without access to water or gas there wasn't much I could do, so amidst the chaos I beat a path to my computer pushing all feelings of guilt to one side and this is what happened.

I chose the Helen MacInness quote but I was reminded of the quote : Everyday may not be good, but there's something good in every day. Tee hee

and have been doing my layouts in journal size. But not every layout is a journal, kwim? This piece most definitely was, though, and I am going to print it out and paste it in. Or duct tape it. Or glue dot. Or whatever adhesive comes to hand.
