As we move toward the Halloween season, it seems like an appropriate time to put together a Gothic Arches swap. If you're not familiar with the arches, check out these websites.

Gothic Arch Book Project (http://www.art-e-zine.co.uk/Belgothic.html)

Karen's Muse and Musings (http://karenink.typepad.com/karens_muse_and_musings/gothic_arches/)

Paper Whimsy (http://www.paperwhimsy.com/forumgal/Projects/whimsy-witchies-gothic-arch-swap/) (these were all Halloween related)

flickr (http://www.flickr.com/groups/508544@N20/)

If we get enough interest, here's how it would work.
Each participant would e-mail me their mailing addresses and I would distribute these to all participants.
You can download a template here, http://rapidshare.com/files/148418077/GothicArchTemplates.zip.html, or make your own, making sure the base is 4x4.
Each person would make one arch.
You would print out an arch for you and one for every other participant, embellish them if you wish, and add a backing with your contact info, just as if you were doing an ATC.
Mail a copy of your arch to every participant before the deadline.I would like to promise that I will make beautiful covers for everyone, but things are a little crazy around here now. Instead, I'll promise that I'll try. :-)

If we do this, I think a Halloween theme would be appropriate, so dig out those pictures of pointy hats, pumpkins, and ravens.

Completed arches will be due by Oct. 31.

Not much time (Oct. 3-31); but maybe that's a good thing!

I'm in, Donna.

That's great, Victoria. I've posted templates in the original post so you can get started as soon as you like.

Forgot to ask, will the backs be glued together? Or will they all show?

best to get my July ATCs done this weekend. If that happens, I will have Monday to sign up and meet the deadline. I wanna play! But I am in serious doo-doo with myself over this ATC and have to dig myself out of that hole, first. (But I really wanna play.)

Count me in, Donna. Sounds like fun. Will we allow for punches on the side to assemble in books, or will we use pocket books? I recently made a pocket book for CDs in my art group by using artist's 9 x 12 tracing paper . Using the page longwise, I folded up a pocket, then folded the page in half with open edges to the left, assembled enough for pages desired, punched holes in the left, decorated some cardstock for cover, used popsicle sticks for stability, and laced it all together with ribbon. It would be a simple way for everyone to display their collection!

Kimmie

Bev, do you have a site where I can see the finished product? Pockets? I need pictures!

I don't have a blog, Kimmie, but I'll try to get a couple of decent photos of it and post them here. If you follow the instructions, it will unfold before your very eyes! Gone now for my camera.

No sooner said than done. I've posted 3 pics in the Altered Art gallery. I hope they will help you see how I put it together, Kimmie. If you have questions, give me a shout.

Thanks for the pictures! Now I understand...this way you can take them out and view the information on the back of the CD, ATC or Arches.

I'm all arts and craftsy today so I'm putting together books to store your arches in. They'll have pockets so you won't have to worry about holes damaging your work.

Bev, thanks for the inspiration.

Denise, if you choose to use my little books you won't be gluing the backs together, so you can make the backs as simple or elaborate as you wish.

I finished my ATCs tonight: printed, cut, pasted, note, enveloped and enveloped! Will stick the addresses on tomorrow and mail on Monday. Free, free at last!

Yeah, yeah, yeah! Now I have to scoot over and sign up for October ATCs, too.

But I definitely want in on this Gothic Arch gig!

OK, after my tantrum that you all even lifted the veil about gothic arches, you set up a Halloween themed hardcopy, keep it forever swap with a side of Donna's special talent to wrap it all up. Alright, yes yes yes!!! All this artistic talent, yeah, I want that in my new home! I want to play! I am off to download the template and get this thing going!

Yippee! or should I say Hooooowwwwwwll!

Donna,
Are you going to do a limit of 10 people participating? I've already started since the 10 people are listed; but wanted to be sure.

Thanks so much for starting/doing the Arches.

kygirl
09-30-2008, 08:31 AM
Bev, I have no idea what's going on there. You can send your addresses to me at dbmiller(at sign)iglou.com.

Victoria, the only limit I set was that participants had to respond by Friday. My guess is that almost everyone has signed up already. Do you guys want to stop it at ten so that we can start printing out our arches now?

gothmama
09-30-2008, 10:10 AM
That call is yours, Donna, as you are the one making the covers! For which we are all very thankful. This is so exciting!
Other than not wanting to impose on your efforts, the more the merrier! Printing is easy, no?

Okay, we're going to cut it off at ten participants. That way we can all get started, and ten works out really well for the books I'm putting together. I'll get the mailing addresses to you all soon.

gothmama
09-30-2008, 12:35 PM
I have just opened the template and it looks to be about 6.5 inches tall by 4 inches wide, is that right?

Are we cutting these and putting them in sleeves, or leaving them on their "frame"?
Are we backing them?
Do we need to leave a margin for binding?

Whew, so much to learn!

Thanks for the help.

Did I mention how excited I am to have hardcopy originals by all you artists? YAY!!!! Happy Halloween to me! <grin>

Blessings,

Laurel

kygirl
09-30-2008, 02:02 PM
Laurel, that's the right size. When cut out, they'll fit into the 4-inch pockets in the book. You won't need to leave binding room because they'll fit in the pockets.

What I usually do is print both the front and back (which includes your name, date, etc) on cardstock, cut them out, and glue the two pieces together. If you want to add embellishments, such as charms, glitter, etc., you can.

So glad you're excited about this. I am, too.

Kimmie
09-30-2008, 02:35 PM
I am excited too, but I really need a witch's hat! Help! Then I am ready to print. If anyone comes across a hat please post link. "Not to wear"

Just one question, should the arch when completed by cut away from the frame? I'm confused because, looking on the web, some arches seem to be cut away whilst others are left in the frame.

Firstly, Bev, got yours! Nummy nummy nummy. Have put it someplace so the twinkle doesn't fall off while I am waiting for my official book! You are so quick off the mark and I greatly admire your cutting skills. That was the template I wanted but decided I would not be able to get those top curves done very well so I chose another one.

I have part of mine printed out and am now arguing ferociously with myself about how to execute the darn thing. I do not think hybrid comes naturally to me (possibly one of the best examples of understatement ever uttered on these boards!) I think I am happy with the paper which is a good start. Sometimes I have to reprint because it just doesn't work and I have found choice of paper can make or break it with something so small. My goal for the weekend is simply to make one sample that works-- after that I can swing into "factory" production.

As always, without fail, and with an eerie sentience that keeps me from loving my printer, the very inks that I need show up empty as soon as I start printing. It really does blow my mind. However, a trip to the store has been made and the inks purchased. There is nothing stopping me from finishing this except fear that I am not going to be able to quite get it. If all else fails, I will run down to Woodstock. Ruth, o Ruth! I need your skills!

ruthpics

Come on down! Play hooky and pick a day! I am off for the next 2 weeks and hope to play, play, play! Need to finish up my September ATC and my arches. Digitally, I think I am done, just need to plan the hybrid...I struggle with this too, Kim. Thinking I need a trip to Michael's :) Oh, maybe today! Heading to London to clothes shop for Michael before we head to my dad's for dinner. I swear I can see him growing right before my eyes. He is now taller that me and has no problem teasing me about it. I am now the short one in the family ;)

I can't believe pages are making their way around the world already! You are quick of the mark, Bev. I am anticipating its arrival!!

Bev, what a wonderful arch. You've got us off to a great start.

I hit Hobby Lobby and picked up the chipboard and embellishments I needed for the books only to discover that I, too, am out of ink. I guess I used it all up trying to get the blasted covers sized correctly. :-) But the project should move fairly quickly now. I'm planning on setting up an assembly line on my dining room table, the only place big enough to handle the long strips of paper I need for the pockets.

I thought I would give it a rest tonight after I cut out all the arches but before I knew it, I put them all together. So, they are done! I will let them "age" a bit (translation: make sure they all don't fall apart after they have been sitting around for 24 hours) and then hunt for my mailing list and get them out.

In the meanwhile, I now have three Arches. Bev, I already thanked. Ann, I got yours and it is so bright and funky! Love the "glowing ring" recipe of a sure fire witches brew! Laurel, I finally opened yours and now that eyeball is following me everywhere I go in my studio. It is looking at me RIGHT NOW. Whew! I got mine printed and sent to Costco tonight and I will pick them up tomorrow at lunch. Hopefully I will be able to cut and label them tomorrow night and get them mailed on Wednesday. Sorry that most of you won't get them for Halloween, but at least they will be yours soon.

To make up for the delay, you are all getting "bonus" arches! I made a wonderful, spooky arch that I love, but when I was done, I realized it really wasn't Halloween-ie. I tried to ask DH's opinion, but he really couldn't get past the idea of what they were but I could tell he didn't like it.

So the "official" arch is a light-hearted Halloween theme, and the other is, well; darker, let's say! hopefully one of them will strike your quirky fancy, LOL!

Happy Halloween to you, and thank you for the two amazing arches that I received today. They are both terrific. I can't imagine deciding one was not thematic enough, but I am thrilled with the bonus! Wonderful!!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

Blessings,

Laurel

Denise, did I mention that I love yours? I am blown away by your mad hybrid skills. I am truly interested in learning what you use to create something like that. Fantastic!

Kim and Denise your arches arrived this morning and they are both fantastic. Kim I love that I can peep behind the door, and Denise I just love that photo of the trick or treaters.

Thank you so much to you both.

I received mine from Denise today too. It's a beauty, and I've already added it to the album. What a joy to look at them all lined up in their album pockets!

Oh, I am in love with Nosferatu! It arrived today and I am stunned by how wonderful it is! This has been one of the best swaps I have ever been in--and I've done lots so it really says something!

Thanks, everyone so very much!

I just keep hoping that the next day will bring your arch. But so far, nothing!

Ruth, I got yours and yelled jinx when I saw the back, lol! I am still shaking my head at the work you put into the spider and the hair. You are truly insane, in case you had any lingering doubts. And the poor sister who became a spider, well!

So far, I have four out of ten. I have Bev, Laurel, Ann and Ruth.

I am glad some of you are getting mine, they should all arrive this week. I was careful about postage (read: I asked my able assistant to make sure they had enough so they wouldn't get messed up, lol!)

When I made my arches, I made 11. I have one on my desk with your name on it! I will send it to you on Monday.

Kimmie! Sorry to be such a pita! And please, buy a "b"! ETOBICOKE. Although that didn't seem to stop them delivering some of them. Who can fathom the mysteries of the hearts and minds of the post office?

Kim,

I found my address this morning, so I was able to address the envelope.

This is not the first time I have lost items through our mail system. My post office is known for losing mail.

If anyone has not received an ATC or arch, please let me know.

Lianna, thank you times 2 - I got both arches in the mail today and all I can say is, "WOW!" and "WHY?" Anyway, I'm so glad you decided to do 2 of them because they are both delicious.

Kim, thank you!!! Nosfaratu, eh??? I love it and I love it even more that you put your "nevermore" stamp of approval on it. Yeah!!!! I have an original "nevermore"!!!

If you don't get my arch by next week, please post here, I'll send you another one. I was so hoping your mail would be delivered without the infamous "B"; but if not, I'll send another.

And Donna, my arch book is looking "divine". Who would have thought it????

Anyway, I'm delighted with it and now I have company for a week starting Tuesday, so I'll get to work on my ATC and CD projects after Nov. 13. (Can I tell my guest I really want to work on projects instead of being with her??? OK, I'll bite the bullet and wait!)

Did you ever see the Spongebob where Nosferatu is having them on? <wagging finger> I love your arch. I really need to learn more about the hybrid action. Perfectly spooky cool. Thanks so much. Now my fabulous DAQ arch book is complete. Thank you all!

Blessings,

Laurel

Thank you Lianna and Denise...they arrived today!
So exciting to see new artwork. Love to know where the images are from.

I am going to have a hard time packing these away for next year. I do plan on displaying them on my entertainment unit with cobwebs and candy corn next year.

Me too! Except I got THREE beautiful cards. Lianna, your cards are spookily gorgeous, and wotta surprise to get a bonus beauty. Thank you so much. Kim, what gorgeous papers, what ingenuity, how stunningly CLASSY! I can't bear to put them all away. I think it will be Halloween at my house until past Thanksgiving at least!!

Kim, what a wonderful card. I know it's silly, but my favorite part is the doorknob. I just love perfect little details such as that one.

That completes my book, and I'm sorry that it's over. This has been a wonderful swap. Thanks to all of you for playing along.

(or not--it has been balmy here of late). I now have Denise's card--Oh, just scrumptious! And you deked Max out for sure. He looked at it and said "she did a great job on that digital paper" and then he realised that it actually was real paper attached and that kind of threw him for a loop. Poor kid is used to graphic manipulations.

And, yes, I got my envelope holder book from Donna with her arch inside. Donna, this is just fantastic and I am so so so pleased! So pleased and hugging you for all your fantastic endeavours. How could I not like your card, by the way? I haven't put my arches in yet, haven't had time but I can't wait :)

Regretfully, I have not received Liana's or Kimmie's or Victoria's (sob). What is with that! Victoria and I swap just about every month!

Kim,
Sorry to hear that you haven't yet gotten my arch.

We were out yesterday evening and my knee popped! I cannot walk or put any weight on it. So, I'm going to the doctor today - last night was miserable but I didn't want to go to the ER.

I'm guessing I'll have a bummer night tonight after he drains the fluid - my knee is swollen; and he'll probably say stay off it for a while so I won't be on the computer either.

I'll have my DH send out the arch to you, Kim; but it will probably be a few days from now.

So, off to see the doctor.

Take care of yourself, Victoria. That sounds so painful.

Ann, I hope your book shows up soon. If you don't receive it in the next week or so, let me know and I'll put together another one for you.

I have plenty of thanks to give out!

Thank you, Kim! Loving the papers, it is like they are woven with gold and silver thread. Great job on your cutting...it is superb! And, I like that jeweled door knob too!

Denise...wow! Love the photo and the pencil writing. So wonderfully heritage and beautiful. Thank you!

I got 2 spooks for the trade of 1! Lianna, thank you for you set of wonderfully spooky arches! How perfectly quirky it is to have an extra page in a quirk book!

This leaves Donna! Thank you for your awesome arch! The accordian fold book that you made for each of us quirky swappers is outstanding and I thank you so much for all the work you put into these.

My book is now complete, chunky, spooky and full of quirky art from my quirky friends. Thank you all for your wonderful art!!

Victoria, I am so sorry about your knee. Rest and take care of yourself.

Thanks to all once again from my corner of the world. My wonderful daughter-in-law stopped by last night, and she spent the longest time looking through the arches album, uttering little ooh and aahs along the way. The is most impressed with all of you! Do I have to put it away yet???? When I get out the Christmas decorations after Thanksgiving is time enough, isn't it ????

I have been holding my breath this whole time...finally I can breath!
I am so glad you received your arch! The window is part of the old farm house my DH and I came across on our vacation to Yellowstone Park in September.

The paper I used is 100# Cougar Color Copy paper.

I would love to thank everyone...this was the best exchange ever!

I got my Arch last night--

My book is complete! To all those who sent me twice, I have to "borrow" Laurel's Bright blessings because I really do so appreciate it! I am thrilled with the book and this really was a memorable swap. I do feel bad that I was the fly in the ointment insofar as not getting some of the original mailings but please believe me when I tell you how happy I am with this project!

P.S. I hope we are going to do another in the New Year!

I'm so glad you got all the arches, Kim.

This was my second swap and I love both my Swap Books so much!

I am also looking forward to the next swap, and if it's after New Year's that would be great.

Thanks everyone, for this Arch Swap.
