Welcome to our first-ever technique challenge. Thanks to all of you who answered the software poll. It looks like most of us have some form of Photoshop Elements or Photoshop, so those are the software packages we'll be focusing on.
Today, we're going to look at creating a poster effect using just two filters, http://www.alibony.com/pse/030408posterize.html. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Thank you Donna for walking me through this aspect of PS.
This is how mine turned out

Ann, that was a perfect photo for this technique.
I've been playing around with this, and I've learned that it doesn't work as well on darker photos. Play around with the numbers in the poster edge filter until you get an effect you like.
And for you Photoshop users, the Posterize effect is under Image-Adjustments.

there is more than one way to get to where you want to go. Donna, the posterize under Image-Adjustments has less options than if you use the Poster Edges found in the Filter Gallery under the Artistic folder. It breaks out three options.
This is what they use in the tutorial even though it is PSE. PS, of course, has a Filter Gallery and I am not sure why Ann didn't find it but it is definitely there :)

there is a huge difference between using Posterize (under Image, Adjustments) and using Poster Edges under Artistic in the Filter Gallery. Have fun!

Kim, we're using both the poster edges and posterization effects for this one. Layering them one on top of the other gives a much brighter effect than just using poster edges alone.

At the moment, I hate you both! Where the ******** does PSE keep the Blend Mode I'm supposed to casually select on the umpteenth layer??? I'm posterized and stuck! Oh fecal matter del toro .... HELP!

Having had my snit, I am retiring to my DIP and sucking my thuimb for the evening. I'll have another foray tomorrow.

Oh, Bev, don't be mad. :-) Go over to your layers panel (that's the one with all the little pix representing your layers). There's a box at the top that says Normal. It has little arrows beside it. If you hit the arrows, you'll get a list of all the blending options. It's lots of fun to click on the different ones and see how it changes your picture.

Thanks, Donna, I found the blend mode and completed the tutorial. I now have a quite ugly photo of an adorable little girl! I will attempt to control my swearing, whining and snitting in the future. It's a good thing I know how smart I am or I'd think I was stone stupid....sigh! It's just that God blessed me with the lowest frustration threshold known to mankind!

you could have been here when I reread your first post (we will be using two filters), and the tutorial. What a laugh we would have had in light of my postings here. Thank the lord I do not take myself seriously at any level any more. I swear I am becoming Edith Bunker.
Off topic, can I have a link to Helen's blog please? I so want to see this new grand daughter! I know that there is a post somewhere with people's blogs but of course I can't find it.

As long as Joe doesn't turn into Archie, you should be okay. :-)

Just when I was thinking I was the only silly girl here, along comes Kim to save my bacon! You both should know (in case you need a good belly laugh), that 3:30 a.m. found me, unable to sleep, at my computer wrestling once more with PSE-5. Through the murky waters that now constitute my brain, a glimmer of light! In the darkest corner of my bedroom/office I heard a faint voice mumbling something about old dogs and new tricks ....... and quirksisters.....and safe places......

said in my best ironic tone, so glad we get to be morons together! Actually, pretty darn pleased to have company. Why don't you come up here and visit me? I will have you mastering PS in hours. Seriously. Hop on a plane. Stay for a week or two. When was the last time (if ever?) you visited Toronto?

Donna, here is my entry for this challenge: http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6274&nocache=1
Are you going to create a special section for these images?
Bev, sounds like a wonderful opportunity to have a great time...you go girl! Enjoy! Toronto is waiting!

I fear my jetting days are over, Kim, but thanks so much for the offer. I'll have to be satisfied with our visits here in Quirkville. I've never been to Toronto. (The closest was to Niagara Falls, Ontario, and the beautiful, meticulously manicured gardens there.)
Donna, after seeing Kimmie's example of posterizing, it appears the secret is in the photo chosen. The process helped me to understand a bit more about layering in PSE, however, and that was a major breakthrough for me! Thanks.

As I am sure I could have had Ruth join us and it would have been a quirk party! Metric tonnes of wine gums would have been eaten (whether you ate any or not: Ruth and I can consume metric tonnes all on our lonesome).

I think it's about time for another wine gum feast, Kim. And it would be wonderful to share with you, Bev. We will have to eat some in your honour ;) No problem, it is a task Kim and I can handle.
