Today's technique is fun and easy. We're going to do a pencil sketch. There's actually a whole group of filters (Filters-Sketch) that result in sketched effects, but frankly, none of them are that good. You'll get a much better result using the Webworksite tutorial found here (http://www.webworksite.com/pencil_sketch_tutorial.shtml).

What can you do with the resulting image? You can leave it as is, color it in using brushes, layer it with the original image (an effect that's really cool if you blur the original first), or just print it out and let your kids or grandkids color it.

I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Note: Because we're working in many different versions of Photoshop and Elements, your screen may vary from the one in the tutorial. If you run into a wall, just post and we'll try to walk you through it.

Here's a piece featuring my grandson, http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6305&cat=507.

I learned that this technique doesn't work well on dark or muddy photos; it's better with high contrast photos with bright colors.

It took me a while to find a photo this would work with. I am slowly beginning to understand how to negotiate PSE-5, thanks to the tutorials, Donna....and hence thanks to you. I wanted a sepia effect, but couldn't figure out how to do that.

It's here (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6306&cat=500&ppuser=314)

I am not a huge fan of pencil sketches but I just loved that "blind" part in the tutorial where you apply the blur and then wait for the sketch to appear! That is a lot of fun!

I love your pieces, Kim and Bev.

I just wanted to let everyone know that there's a new Technique Challenge category in the Gallery.

Bev, a quick and dirty way to get a sepia tone on a black and white photo is to go to Image-Adjustments-Variations. Start off by clicking on "More Yellow" and then "More Red." Add more yellow, red, or blue until you get a sepia effect that you're happy with.
