My dad had a darkroom in our basement, so I grew up playing with photo equipment. Back then, you would adjust how dark or light portions of your photo were by using your hand to expose the photo to more or less light. If the area was too dark, you would "dodge" it by blocking off the dark area, thus exposing it to less light. If an area needed to be lighter, you would "burn" that area by exposing it to more light.

With Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, that process is SO much easier. All you have to do is use the dodge and burn tools.
