A Basic Tutorial...

...for a layout I just did. Donna/kygirl had asked me how I did it so I've posted some basic instructions-- at least to the best of my memory!

See my layout from a couple days ago: Faery in the Garden, and you can see how I got the effect. It's a bit of a signature style that I developed purely by accident. I recommend lots of experimentation with Photoshop. You never know what you'll come up with!

Here's the mini tutorial, Juli posted with her artwork (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6841&si=faery%20in%20the%20garden). If I can get my Mac working, I'd like to give it a try.

Take a photo of your favorite flower, grasses, whatever...something with a lot of texture.

Now, in Photoshop:

Crop and size the photo. Under IMAGE>Adjustments in toolbar, adjust the contrast, then click on THRESHOLD and make adjustments until desired effect is achieved. Next, click on Invert, then with the Magic Eraser tool, erase all the white space in the image. This will leave you with an image that looks like an ink stamp. Now, filter this, or not-- until you get the desired effect. And then save.

Now, under EDIT, select Define Brush Preset and save the image as a brush.

Now, just play around with the image, adding additional layers using the new brush-- and also adjusting the scale and the opacity of individual layers.

At this point, it's all up to you to fill in with colors that you like, filter as you like, use lighting effects, etc. Play around with the Hue and Saturation, and Brightness and Contrast (all found under IMAGE> Adjustments) in toolbar.
