View Full Version : It's All Black and White, Oct. 6-12

When my son was small, he would cry "I don't want to watch gray movies," whenever a black-and-white film would come on the television. Unlike my son, I grew up in a world of black-and-white television, newspapers and photography. To me, there's nothing more beautiful than an Ansel Adams landscape.
That's why I was excited when I saw the newest issue of Altered Bits (http://alteredbits.com/artzine.php), a free downloadable arts magazine. This issue features all b/w art, and it's totally gorgeous.
The challenge this week is to create a piece of art using only black, white, and the accompanying shades of gray. Please post your work in the Artist's Studio (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=578) gallery, and link back here so that we can all admire your work.

Thanks to Donna for the peek at Altered Bits, all black and white and dark. The mood took me so mine is pretty dark too. My picture is here:

This looks like it would be a pretty simple challenge, but it's more difficult than you might think. I kept wanting to throw some red in.
Here's mine: http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6970&nocache=1

Famous last words. I got suckered into surfing. I came upon some sepia photographs at Stock Exchange that looked like interesting candidates for b/w conversion but I became fascinated by their history. Turns out that a sculptor (still living) named Rowan Gillespie did a two continent piece. A series of figures in Ireland of famine immigrants leaving and a series in Toronto of figures arriving. I know nothing about the Irish Potato Famine so went on the net and it is now some two hours later and I am too tired (and depressed) to continue. I will be taking Max down to the park this month (he is Irish on his father's side, Scottish on mine. We could never figure out how he could preferred pasta over tatties!) I had never heard of it or Gillespie before. If I go this weekend, I will get my own photos.

Before I succumb to my urge to put in something red, here's (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6972&cat=578)my effort!

One of my assemblages, RFT, a tribute to my grandfather, was actually included in the Altered Bits Zine (last 2 pages)! It was my first zine submission, and I was really excited to have it accepted! I also created another digi-hybrid piece that didn't make it in (too much sepia?), so when I saw this challenge, I thought I'd post it here instead!
Hope you like it as much as I do... if it has too much sepia for this theme, too, let me know- I'll move it to another section!

Not really B&W, but not full of colour either. I've been endlessly playing around with my blog and I finally made something that I'm reasonably happy with. It's mostly B&W, does it count?

I just found this challenge and thought I would submit a LO I did yesterday. Seemed appropriate for the theme :)

and a lot of mucking around, I am calling it finished and posting it even though I am not happy with it at this point. It has reached the "either go in a different direction or throw it out" stage and I suspect the different direction would mean colour! Black and white is hard hard hard!

Guess I"ll have to be the odd one out-I love working with black and white-especially with historic images...find it can go either way...dark, moody and mysterious, or full of drama and life and light!
Have noticed that posts from other Forums, even past posts there are seeming to be encouraged...so I"m uploading 2!
Wee Apologies to those who frequent either the Darkside or 3 Muses challenge sites...you might have seen them before!
The second illustrates my first point about light and life; and the first speaking of more dark imaginings....
Links will be to my blog, and uploads to DAQ Gallery here:
