One advantage that traditional artists have over us digital ones is that they can easily add texture to their work. While they create actual textures that you can reach out and feel, we have to rely on virtual textures that fool the eye into seeing depths and edges.

PaperWhimsy has a nice blog post (http://paperwhimsy.typepad.com/paperwhimsy/2008/07/dumpsters.html) that shows just what a difference overlaying a texture on your photo or artwork can make.

Textured overlays are available at all the digi scrapping stores, but it's more fun to use actual photos of sidewalks, rust, tree bark, etc. If you don't have any photos on hand, you can find some great ones at stock.xchng or at Lost and Taken. (http://lostandtaken.com/)

I'm looking forward to seeing your textured artwork in our Artist's Studio (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=578) gallery. Extra points if you shoot photos of your own textures for this one. :)

No sooner said than done! Thanks for the great challenge, Donna. I had fun making my textured picture from a very ordinary and fairly dull photo.

Oh Donna! I can't do this while I'm away and you know I'm the texture junkie! Took some great grunge shots in Amsterdam today and can't wait to play with them x

Great challenge. I have been pondering the idea of "textures" for too long now. Thanks for getting me off my keester!

How strange, I've been a texture collector for ages and have only just started to use them seriously this week, meaning, of course, that I'm using texture in everything! LOL.

I'll check out what everyone has done and upload some of mine too.

If I can just share one little note on texture-- in my last layout called Hysteria 1692-- the image I used was something I found on the internet, and it was absolutely perfect for layering on the tombstone image that was my own. Anyway, for my theme of the Salem Witch trials I needed an image of a noose to incorporate into the picture. Well, I just happened to have a photo that I took recently out in our garden, of a little bit of garden string, hanging down in the shape of a noose. When I first took the photo, I had no idea what I would do with it- it was just hanging there looking interesting and I figured sooner or later I would use it in my artwork. And now, just a few weeks later I found a use for it.

My point is, always look closely at the little details in your photos-- you never know when the smallest most seemingly insignificant thing might turn out to be of use.

Bye for now! :]
