Do you want to create an art journal in 2010?
If so, would you like a monthly challenge?
Would you like one person to host or a different hostess each month?

kygirl

Cindy, I'd be interested in working on an art journal next year. Would you be interested in hosting? I bet we could find someone to co-host.

Donna,
Yes, I can host it. I know alot quirky digiters participate in other challenges, I think a monthly page owuld be okay for most quirky digiters. Evenwhen I am having a flare up, I can still host a monthly art journal challenge. I have many "how to" art journal books which I will use for challenges.

Is anyone else interested in participating in a monthly art journal challenge?

Yes, I'd be up for it and happy to co-host if someone is needed. Really want the impetus to do more journalling x

Cindy,
What a great challenge idea. I would love to participate. I think having the resources to help with the art journals is an extra added bonus, too.

I will post prompts at the beginning of each month. If possible, post your journal page(s) by the end of the month.

I am going to try to create a 2 page art journal every month. I want to publish it at at the end of the year. It will be a 24 page book!

(If you want to pre-order, let me know by the beginning of November. I'll make sure my publisher reserves one for you. If you want it autographed, there will be a delay. I have numerous book signing events and will have to "fit you in". ) Just kidding in this paragraph!

Wondering if I can do the two birds, one stone thing? Tangie Baxter is doing a 52 week Art Journal which I have just committed to-- don't see why I can't combine one of those weeks with the monthly challenge here! I am so happy to see this happening here!

Hey, that's a great idea to combine the two!

Do we just have to use Tangies stuff for that challenge Kim? Lovely as it is, I wouldn't want to tie myself down.

12-16-2009, 09:28 AM
No, not at all re using Tangie's stuff. She has a huge bunch of stuff you get when you sign up and ongoing discounts off her stuff throughout the year but no Tangie requirement. I just figured it would "force" me to do art journal pages because it is a heavy comittment (it is not cheap-- I amortized it in my head over 52 weeks and decided that that was okay).

Anyway, not trying to turn this thread into a promo for Tangie (although I would love it if a few quirks turned up!) but was just kind of thinking out loud. It turns out that my art journal (purchased two years ago and almost empty) is the same size as my digital frame (12 x 9) so it is fated.

I was thrilled to see this post when I came in here because I figure I can double dip!

Well, to tell you the truth, Tangie's Challenge is very inviting! I also signed up for it!

Is anyone NOT going to participate in Tangie's challenge?
If so, do you STILL want to participate in a monthly art journal challenge here?

kygirl
12-17-2009, 09:57 AM
Cindy, I'd be willing to try to do both, but it's your call. Maybe we could do a themed art journal that would be different enough from Tangie's class that we wouldn't feel like we were repeating ourselves.

Since ours would be monthly, it could be related to the idea of a dozen, e.g. A Dozen Things I Like About Me; ...that Make Me Crazy; ...that Make Me Quirky. Or it could be related to the months, The Best Thing about January, February, etc. or My Crazy Year, with a page devoted to our activities during each individual month. I'm just brainstorming here. I bet you guys can think of dozens of more topics.

And gals, regardless of where the challenge is hosted, please post your pages in our art gallery so that we can all oooh and ahhh, and learn and grow. :)

Cindy,
I'm not doing Tangie's challenge although I would love to. I just can't spend the money on it right now. So your challenge is perfect for me in the DAQ here and now.

I also like Donna's idea of choosing a theme for the 12 months and going with the challenge here at DAQ.

Cindy, I won't be doing Tangie's journal either. I will be away for a couple of months next year, so monthly is just right for me, and I will be happy with the prompts you choose. Can't wait, so go for it.

Does anyone else have ideas?
I was going to take prompts from my art journaling books and cards I have on my bookshelf. Feel free to add more topics!

Also, do you want to take turns for each month? We would need 11 more hostesses.

Tell me your ideas and thoughts!

FYI: This is one of the art journal inspirtation and techniques I am thinking about using:

It's on the right hand side of the blog:
WIDE OPEN (http://randif.blogspot.com/)

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s219/FLCindy/newone.jpg

Description:
Take your visual journaling to the next level. Each card in this inspiring card deck offers ideas to stretch your approach to observing and chronicling the daily events around you. From self portraits to extreme photography techniques you will be inspired to change the way you look at things. Each unique creativity set includes 50 cards and a creativity notebook to record your own art journal explorations.

It sounds "simple". However, the challenges are quite interesting and are not the usual "self portraits to extreme photography techniques you will be inspired to change the way you look at things."

Just something to consider as we decide on our art journal challenges.

I am calling my Tangie Art Journal Into the Great Wide Open.

I like the idea of a theme of twelve to tie the thing together, however loosely. Better yet, 13 for a Baker's Dozen (it needs a cover, right?)

If you wanted to leave it as wide open as possible, we could do something like Anatomy of a Baker's Dozen and have the first month be about whatever the prompt is but it would focus visually on 1, second month on 2, third month on 3 etcetera. I don't mean that the prompt is about 1, 2, 3 or 4. The prompt can be anything-- but as part of the visual journalling, the page would have 1 item, 2 items, 3 items. Subtle but a tie in of everything.

I am always "giving" myself crazy stuff: an hour, a home pedicure, a wish. It could be a Twelve Month's of Journalling theme: on the first month of journalling I gave myself... on the second month of journalling I gave myself. Gifts could be suggested as prompts: unconditional love, guilt free days, news blackout, one hour of bathtub daydreaming, whatever. I am sure each of us has different gifting needs!

Okay, might have more ideas but have to go save the world from Ranger's Chew All Jaws. If only that puppy would turn his energy to good! The world's problems would be solved inside a year!

My "art" journals are so extemporaneous, while this idea interests me, I don't think mine would fit in. Some of my pages are cut and paste collage, some contain poems, brief essays, and everything is interspersed with a recount of my activities, occasional photos, political statements, impressions of current events, and illustrated with whatever quirky "art people" strike my fancy at the time. My local little art group is planning a 5x7 collab journal as well, so I'll just follow here with curiosity and maybe share an occasional page that fits, if that's okay.

Cindy I would like it to be as open as possible : giving us a prompt each month for each of us to interpret in our own individual way. I'm new to journaling so I would love to wonder where my muse takes me after receiving a prompt and see what happens. I do quite like Kim's idea about gifting for one or two of the months because I can see how that will lead to very individual interpretations.

I hope that helps.

Cindy, I would love to take part in the Art Journal challenge but, in the meantime, I need to get a handle on what art journaling is so I will be madly Googloogling. I think you will find that there are a few would-be art-journallers around. We just need somewhere to start and hopefully there will be some pages posted in this coming week to inspire us. I'm a mad blogger and I see a lot of art journal pages but they are so different in styles. I can draw a bit, paint a bit and print not half bad texts so that is a start is it not?
Is it just a matter of posting a page before the end of each month? I gather there is no swapping? Thanks, Cindy. I hope your Christmas is a happy one. It's Christmas eve here, noon time. It's HOT. I just called into my small local handymart to pick up a few items and it was absolute mayhem. Thank goodness for air conditioning and afternoon sea breezes.

Marie,
I was thinking of you last night as I went to sleep. I knew it was Christmas Eve in your part of the world. I was wondering how you were doing in the heat.
Art journaling can be of any medium-just like ATC's. You can do it digitally, hands on, paint, draw, glue, ect......
It's simple really: a prompt is posted. Then, you find images, items, ect that you feel (in relation to the prompt-if you want). You can write words, stamp, ect...
I have a hands on art journal. The other night, I glued beads, feathers, postcards, images from magazines, the package of a sample of coffee ("found" when I brewed coffee at a hotel on a trip) jewelry I picked up from a thrift store and old eyeglass case and ribbon with "spiders" attached and the Starbucks sleeve for coffee. I used a variety of stamps in a variety of colors.
Now, I didn't interpret the pages. I will do that later. You don't have to interpret the pages. You just have to play.
Digitally-you can add whatever you want.
We can trade via zip files-IS ANYONE INTERESTED?
Yes, the "art journal page" is due at the end of each month.
Thank you for the wishes for a happy Christmas. My best present will be TODAY (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/forum/showthread.php?p=25372#post25372). I (we) shall share the surprise later! I hope your Christmas is nice and not too hot! How close do you live to the beach?

Thanks for all the information, Cindy, and for your Christmas wishes. I live within walking distance of the Indian Ocean which borders the west coast of Australia. White sandy beaches and pristine blue waters, fantastic. I just drove home from my daughter's house at 8pm with the sun going down into the sea. Most of the journey is a coastal road with greatviews. It was amazing to see how many people were out and about walking their dogs or just enjoying the cool breeze. I am guessing it never gets too cold in your part of the world?

My intention is to learn digital collage and I need structure to 'force' me to practice. Cindy, feel free to butt in!

We are doing a monthly art journal with different hosts. Each month, the host will post a prompt. We have left it pretty wide open as in as far as I know, there really isn't an ongoing theme (I could be wrong! Someone will set me straight if I am). There is no requirement re size, media or anything like that. It doesn't matter if it is mixed media or not either. Whether or not you chose to print and bind it or paint and bind it or alter and bind it or not bind it at all is up to you. (Quirks are OUTRAGEOUSLY reluctant to follow rules :D).

We already have an Art Journal Gallery (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=2)here and until or unless another one is created, makes sense to post your pages here.

We are starting in January but I am the hostess for January and have already posted the prompt in case people want to start in. You can find it here. (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3886)

Cindy, I will jump in at the deep end and host the February challenge. I already have my first journal page ready to post and understand that it can be uploaded any time during the month, up to the end of the month.
Since journaling is a very personal thing, I feel it would be best to throw up a general theme to see what everyone does with it, rather than making it more specific such as lists etc. Is that OK?
