Making Money: Jan. 28-Feb. 3

Here in the United States, our money has gone through a number of redesigns in the past few years, each one uglier than the one before. :) More than once, I've thought I could do better.

That's why I was excited to hear about ArtMoney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artmoney), an art project where artists create original works of art the size of big Danish bank notes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknote) (12x18 cm). Australian money is, on the whole, very colorful. Each denomination is in a different colour which makes the notes instantly recognizable. The 50 dollar note, which I have used for inspiration, is probably the most toned down colour. I have no idea what art money is all about and the Flickr group didn't really speak to me. It seems to be a mishmash of jokey art and real art and some bits in between. Obviously some people take photos of real currency and then Photoshop them. Some of the pictures seem to have little to do with money. Am I missing something? Still, it is a good exercise in something we have never done before.

I had never heard of this ArMoney phenomena before. But why not! There are Artbooks, Artcars, Artjournals, Artart, why not Artmoney! :D

Donna, I have to admit I'm a bit confused as well. Are we supposed to make art the SIZE of currency, art WITH currency, or art resembling currency? Like Marie, I find the Flickr site to be all over the place. Interesting to note the guy who started the phenomenon may face jail time!! I've come up with something here (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=7370&cat=578) I really was at a loss to know what was expected, but I had this $100 dollar bill on my desk, so I put it into a collage.
