View Full Version : Quirk Word Art Fridge Magnets

Nevermore

Yup, you read it here folks! Sign up now to swap cunning quirky word art fridge magnets. This is real life stuff that you can use to put up the bill from paypal for all your scrapping downloads.

Format: business card size fridge magnet. You can buy these pre perforated for the scissors averse, you can buy them in sheets for those who can cut or you can Xyron 'em. In short, don't let the magnet part scare you. Avery sells them in any office supply store and probably in the big box stores, too.

Theme: Word Art a la quirk. Don't ask me what that means. From what I can glean, anything but cute.

Times: I would like to keep the sign up open for ten days or so to give me time to browbeat people who haven't signed up into signing up. What say we end the sign up on November 4th. Give everyone until the 30th to mail them out. I will get a mailing list together (this is the woman who doesn't know her own postal code.)

Group Size: will depend on the sign up. I am thinking two groups of six if we get twelve. If we get less than twelve, we can have a group decision on whether to do one group or still split into two smaller groups.

Please please please please please sign up! If you have never done a real life swap before, you will be so blown away by getting these things in the mail. It is fantastically fun.

I bought some magnetic sheet and magnetic strips today and drooled, yet again, over a wacom tablet.

It is useless to make rules for quirks but I did suggest business card size--no doubt people (quirks) will do whatever they need to do to let their self out. I am thinking business card size because that will let me put 'em all up. Too big and the fridge might topple (can't count on anything in it holding it up because there is nothing in it, cf Holy Doodle).

For specs. on business card size, try https://www.printingforless.com/bizcardspecs.html

All right! We are up to 11! Who is going to make it 12, anybody out there, c'mon, c'mon nice even round number 12 but wait, there is room for a baker's dozen, 18, 24 and any number in between. Step right up step right up.

whee - six magnets done. This was a bit sticky. I put the magnet onto the back of the photo and put the pair into a laminator packet, then laminated. That sounds straightforward, but unfortunately I put two in too close together and they stuck tighter than glue. I mean I couldn't even prise them apart or rescue one of them, nope, they were fused tighter than a drumskin. Shades of Nevermore ... well, it is nearly Halloween.

Nevermore
10-26-2006, 07:38 PM
Um, am I becoming the poster child for projects gone awry! Judith, feel free to mail me the fused ones! Sounds like something I would love, rotfl.

SteinwaysMom
10-26-2006, 10:44 PM
I could probably sign up but do I have to mail out like 12 or do you just pick one person and send them 1 magnet? I am really bad about letting projects pile up, esp ones that require non-computerized intervention.

Nevermore
10-26-2006, 10:59 PM
Rofl Debra. Bowled over by your enthusiasm. I think if we get twelve, we would split it into 6 (Judy might protest because she has probably already done 3 dozen by now). And yes, that would mean mailing to 6 people. I don't think this is quite as tough as ATCs because of the Avery set up ie. no cutting or making backs. But I cannot tell a lie. It will mean more than one and it will mean real life! I am working on mine right now and have not decided if it will be for the swap or not but it has your name on it and you are getting it regardless of whether I swap it and regardless of whether you sign up.

Pixeldigger
10-27-2006, 09:37 AM
No, I've only done the six ... so far. and no more today because of some drops in my eyes which means that I am trying to touch type without seeing clearly and having to reallt concentrate where my jingers are.

I might not be in this with you, I'm afraid. I left the magnets at home when I packed to get to Dad, who is very ill. I have no idea when I will be able to get them out.

Nevermore
10-28-2006, 05:32 AM
Judith, just worry about your dad and taking care of you and yours. We haven't even closed up the sign in sheet yet and the time for mailing them is the end of November. But all rules in quirkland are the flexible, twisty, bendy kind! You are most definitely with us so stop thinking about that.

Are most of you doing six individual magnets or, like a circle journal, doing one that you'll send to everyone?

I have two done and I think I may have found a new obsession, errrr, I mean, hobby! Why is it that mini things are so darn cute?

coffeequeen
10-31-2006, 08:47 PM
Uh oh...I'm afraid I need the answer to this one too...Meg asked: Are we making one magnet design and duplicating it 5 times to send to six folks, or are we making 6 entirely different magnets?

akissling
10-31-2006, 09:20 PM
Being somewhat lazy, I was planning on doing the same one for everybody!

Nevermore
10-31-2006, 09:21 PM
There is no answer per se. I am doing one design that I am sending to everyone. I know that some people do different ones for each person when they are doing an ATC swap and you are certainly free to do so if you want. I won't, sorry. Not sure yet if we are one group of 12 or two of six or if others will yet join so not sure how many different ones you would have to do. Of course, you could always do two or three different ones and send a different one to three or four people. Sigh. No rules, folks. Rules just blow out quirk brains.

Boy am I relieved. 6 different designs would have been my undoing! Still a fledgling quirk and I was a wee bit worried! 6,12 or 24 quirks to send to is just fine!

Well it looks like you have 12 already. I better not sign up cause I have about 3 IRL projects that I'm procrastinating on already.

Funny how you can spend 3-5 hours on the computer but the prospect of printing a lousy 8x8 or gluing something to a piece of paper just seems like too much work. :(

Nevermore
11-01-2006, 06:23 PM
Yes, we have twelve already. And notice I said "or if others will yet join" . There is plenty of room on my fridge! If you are already procrastinating on three, what difference does it make if you add a fourth? I would love to get one of a ferret with a ministry :0

I have post crazy weird (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=2129&cat=500&ppuser=162)

Not sure if this will be my swap piece since I have a few more ideas swirling in my brain.

So did you hear the recent news story where the nurse anesthetist is charged with murdering her plastic surgery patient. The alleged motive was the patient stole the nurse’s sweet heart 30 years earlier in high school.....Crazy Weird!!!!!

Nevermore
11-02-2006, 01:10 PM

I have no idea what Alison is confessing to--anyway, Graybonnie, it is perfectly 100% okay to use the one you did! Don't sweat it. But I would like it if everybody kept it under wraps until we have physically exchanged. One of the main reasons I am now an ATC snail mail swap addict is the unadulterated joy in getting my mail. Call me childish, but it is such a hoot.

With respect to addresses, I will collate them and send them out after the sign up sheet is closed.

With respect to Alison, don't know what you are doing wrong but just stop it, okay?

which reminds me of a layout i need to do on one of my many parenting mantras.

"relentlessly moving them forwards towards bedtime."

and that phrase just seems perfect for quirking.

Yeah and believe it or not, this ferret even has her own 'glamour shots'. She's living w/my friend's sister now as she was too into 'playing' with Steinway, who was not into it.

I'm really kind of afraid to have to send out 6 magnets cause then you have to go to the post office and address letters and stuff and yes I'm that lazy.

Nevermore
11-03-2006, 07:25 PM
Debra, I never would have thought of you that way! Okay, I won't push you. CoffeeQueen, I am glad you are getting happy. I bought my business size precut magnet sheets today and refill inks. I am getting ready for a magnet/ATC weekend!

Got another ATC in the mail today. It is a little ceremony in our household. I get home later than the boys and the mail is on the hutch. A big pile (mostly bills and junk) and always separated, the little envelope that promises to contain a card. The boys are as keen as I am to open it. They take a serious interest and always have comments. They are actually pretty excited about the magnets. In fact, we have decided to give magnets for Christmas this year instead of calendars which is an amazing step really: they have graduated from just wanting my cutesy poo Max photos to wanting quirk stuff.

akissling
11-03-2006, 08:50 PM
That is great that the whole family gets into it!! I plan on spending the whole weekend agonizing over the magnitude of designing a magnet that will presumably stick on everyone's fridge!!!

Nevermore
11-03-2006, 09:54 PM
Technical Note: I bought Avery's 08734 Magnetic Business Card Labels (10 cards to a sheet, 3 sheets. $13.21 Canadian). I set my page to letter, pasted my magnet in it, duplicated, merged (so 1 row of 2 magnets), duplicated 4 more times to get all ten. Merged the entire whack, centred it on the page, printed it out and PERFECT.

I also have the unperforated sheets and I would choose not to centre in that case to have fewer cuts to make. Haven't tried that yet. These are so neat! I think I will make up all 30. I can slip them in anywhere: birthday cards, stockings, loot bags you name it. These are not too quirky so are very versatile (fun for the whole family: o help, I am turning into Martha Stewart. I gotta go make STRONG coffee and scrap a little angst or something. I have been working on Christmas cute stuff like felt ornaments and I am gagging out here. I gotta do something RAW. One more bit of glitter, glue, felt, lace or ribbon and I am going to heave.)

akissling

11-05-2006, 01:13 PM
I have to confess that mine is cute too. I can live with cute. I can live with purple. I am going to cut the polling off soon! Please PM so we can start mailing these things out! And yes, yes, yes, panic not! The last date for mailing remains November 30th so you all have a ton of time! Panic not!

Extra special freebie: I think you will discover that these little cuties are fast and fun so the bonus, if you get a few sheets of magnet paper, is stocking stuffers. Great little gifts for Christmas cards, too, for those people you want to "give" something to but don't shop for. If you know what I mean. I can't be the only one who has those, can I?

webchyck
11-05-2006, 02:07 PM
Great ideas for gift giving! Absolutely. But, uh-oh...my magnet count is now down to 14!!! One died on the table under the Fiskars blade, and the other was laminated with extra goodies you would not want on a magnet...not sure exactly what it was...the remains of what I laminated last I think. Oh yes, that's right! It was Judy's ATC--where she suggested adding the tea...I did that. It was tea! LOL Yes, I laminated mine, as I did not go out and buy magnet paper like the rest of you efficient girls. I adhered my cardstock-printed word art to Bazzill cardstock and then ran them through the Xyron with the two-sided laminating cartridge. I hope they hold together as I trimmed them right up against the cards, instead of leaving the raggedy border. Off to put magnets on the back!

MegB
11-05-2006, 06:31 PM
I want a big bunch of mail, too!! Lots and lots!

I finished my prototypes today and they're already up on my fridge!

I didn't do business card size though, I hope no one minds. I found some 3" square acrylic magnet frames. I love the square shape, so I just had to get them!

I'll start printing and chopping tomorrow!!

webchyck

"instead of leaving the raggedy border". Some of us would LOVE to trim right up to the cards but even doing so doesn't eliminate that nasty raggedy border.

Okay, the vote is in. Unanimously, to date, people want one huge love fest of magnet giving so it is one huge group folks. That is 13 cards assuming you want to give one to Judith and assuming Artwerks shows up! Becky, you can only have one more death!

I have most emails and addresses now with only a couple of exceptions. I will pester those people a tad more and then distribute the mailing list.

Might as well do the crime if I gotta serve the time anyway, so here goes: I am ready to do the next one, ROTFLMBO. Go ahead, wing some magnets at my head. Ya missed, c'mon, c'mon.

Long and short of it is, just need a very few pieces of information before I email out the official list. I don't want to post it for obvious reasons. If I don't hear by tomorrow night, I will mail the list as is and then do the add on thing.

Note:I just want to make it clear that if having 13 people instead of six on your mailing list is making this far more expensive than you planned (for those of us not in the states, it is almost twice the price to mail to the states), please PM me. I am sure a friendly yankee will remail from the states which would defray the cost immensely. This is not supposed to put a strain on anyone's budget.

As one of the few non State siders - it doesn't bother me sending to individuals - as I said to Kim - I knew what I was getting into when I signed up - magnets shouldn't cost that much - and like Becky - I'm probably going to print mine on business card stuff or something and use the Xyron - unless I find something better in the meantime :) Might visit the Reject Shop or the $2 Shop - gotta love those places!!!

I can't wait to get Meg's.... I think I saw them on her blog.... they were oh so prefect!

I think I missed the deadline, but it sounds fun!

I was wondering about the laminating machines for future projects, does anyone recommend a model or web site? I've never used one.

I use the Xyron no heat laminating cartridges that fit right into the Xyron 505. You can get repositionable adhesive and permanent adhesive and the laminating plastic stuff. Very cool. With the 505 model you can insert stuff up to 5" wide. You get 18' of material with each cartridge. There is a significant amount of waste, which bothers me (about an inch per item), but it's so easy to use, it's worth it.

Aw dee dee, don't worry, I am already planning the next one. Seriously. I think people are just going to love these things and I tend to have a nose for a trend. If you PM me your address, I'll send you one anyway (just to lure you into making the next one).
I actually have a Xryon. So far, I have glued and magnetised but I have not laminated. Sounds a little scary. I have the laminating roll so I could do it but I need to gird my loins first. Since I don't gird on a regular basis (kind like my current shaving schedule) might be some time before I check it out. I bought the baby one, not the full size but I got it with a coupon so for about $80 Canadian I ended up with the machine, 18 feet of glue roll, 7 feet of magnet roll and I am not sure how many feet of laminating roll.

I have made magnets with it and with the Avery sheets and must say that the Xyron is infinitely better in quality. Nice gloss and a much heavier magnet. But I chose to use the labels anyway because no cutting.

And I must add that it is absolutely amazing that I am sitting here being one of those people that have one. Please let me know if you need any advice on die cuts.

Update on magnets...design completed, just have to get the magnets...but not today, there's an absolute monsoon going on outside and I don't want to set my foot out the door. Laminating??!! Xyron??!! Is that just to protect the surface from damage when I slam my fridge door shut in a huff and they all fall on the floor?

i have a home scale, so i just went to usps.com to calculate shipping rates.

My envelopes were only 1 oz, so you'd think the regular 1st class postage would've been okay, but because of the bulky nature of them, there was a 13 cents surcharge. I know most of you are doing the flat business card magnet, but if you attach a bulky magnet like I did, then it would cost more. My envelopes were "puffy" the clerk said! LOL! Part of that was the ribbon on the cards I made to send the magnets in.

webchyck
11-06-2006, 11:21 PM
If you want to make sure they are somewhat cleanable, folks, you could probably put a couple of layers of Mod Podge over them or some other kind of finish, instead of laminating. Or not! If any of mine get dirty, say, from an exploding pop can, I'll just email you for a new one! LOL

SMACKS head! I HAVE Mod podge!!!! Okay, I will do it! I will smear 'em with it! Sorry for the excitement but it is an unused LSS product I have so this is pretty darn exciting! Blog this!!!!!

But it certainly isn't a requirement. People can just send 'em out unlaminated and un podged, I don't want any panic!

Puffy. Hmmm. Nope. Mine are flatter than flat. No way they will get puffy even if the mod podge goes on a bit lumpety. If I make a card it will not have any cunningly adhered real life ribbon. Nope.

No cards required, either gals. I have to give warning: Ms. Troxel is the real life queen. She does amazing stuff. It is a joy to get a Troxel card. But that is not a requirement either. And if you do decide to send cards, they can be flat. And unlaminated.

Okay, Becky, I love ya but I can't let you start a puffiness stampede here!

I had a Nevermore...Nevermind experience with my magnets that I thought I might share.
1. When printing out the magnets the ratio is for everyone you want to produce 3 will mess up in the printing (edges cut off by the printer). That means if you want to print out 13 "perfect" magnets buy enough paper for 36 (did I do my math correctly)! At 10 magnets a sheet that is already almost 4 sheets used!
2. Ignore the math from #1 because when you cheap out and buy the sheets rather than the pre-cut sheets 2 more will mess up per sheet due to non-Martha Stewart like cutting with my fiskars cutting mechanism! I must fight the compulsion to outline every darn piece of work because humans just can't cut it right...fiskars or hand cut!! Ok we are now up to the full sheet number 4!
3. When opting for glitter please make sure to use your darker colors first! When using WHITE glitter and then FUSCHIA strangely EVERYTHING becomes fuschia! Goodbye 2 more magnets and we are on to sheet five of the package.
The lesson here BUY ALOT MORE SHEETS!!!

Oh Alison! Kim is rubbing off on people! Or maybe this is just the status quo for digital artists? I don't know...I may despair! If only I could send my crafty vibe to everyone digitally!

By the way, folks, I found these business card size magnets that are already cut, sold in packs of 10, 50, 100. You just peel off the back to expose the adhesive and adhere them to your business card-sized piece. You could just print your digital creation out on card stock, cut those out, and THEN attach the magnet. That's what I'm doing next time...and yes, we are DEFINITELY having a next time...because I bought a pack of 50!

Hey, Donna...if your post office has a self-service station, it's really easy to send international mail yourself. I love my self-service kiosk at my post office. I just key in everything, there's a scale, it's all computerized, it prints out the postage. Very slick. And since it's metered mail, it can go straight into the letter slot...no need to speak to a clerk or wait in line. Well, unless someone is using the self-service station...which they never seem to be!

The postal clerk didn't even give me a funny look when I gave her the upside down envelopes to post. Perhaps she was being kind.

Becky, I looked for the kiosk, but we didn't have one. Technology comes slowly to the sticks.

And, Kim, that is a little weird. And, it was kind of you to reprint. I just let mine go -- I was either too thrifty or too tired to redo them (you'll just have to guess which).
