View Full Version : ATC Jam Session Anyone?

I know there are already a TON of challenges and activities going on here and everyone is still trying to get a grip on those. So I am leary of adding another to the mix. But just want to share this idea I had for a possible future project.

I noticed today there is a section in the gallery for ATC Jams. Have you ever heard of these? It's when a group of people work on 1 ATC. How fun would that be, right?

Here's what I had in mind. One person volunteers to host. A theme is decided upon. Everybody signs up who wants to play. The host randomly groups people together depending on the decided group size. I thought 2 people would be fun for our first try. It's more intimate. So basically one person starts it then sends it to the next to add to and repeat cycle until ATC is finished. Pretty simple in concept but in practice I can think of a ton of problems that might come up so that's why I wanted to start this thread. Maybe we can work it out together.

Scrapability Michelle (aka Mike or PMS) had posted her idea for a similar type of round-robin project here (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/forum/showthread.php?p=295#post295) and she had brought up some issues that apply here. The main one being the problem with file sharing. If I start an ATC using scrap supplies that have TOU's I can't very well send my layered file to another person to work on because they could theoretically take that image they did not pay for and stick it in their stash. So there you have illegal file sharing. Not everyone is a designer and creates their own elements. So if you can't use your scrap stash and you don't create elements, you're pretty much up the creek without a paddle. You could try to find some free-to-use graphics somewhere, etc. but overall it really limits what you can use which in turn limits your creativity which really is no fun at all.

SO to make a long-winded story short, we'd have to find a way to work around this that would still make this a fun and accessible project for everyone.

The only thing I can think of is to pass around flattened files instead of layered. It somewhat limits what the next person can do to the ATC but at least there is no illegal file sharing (i don't think so anyway?). You could still add to it, play around with the blend modes of the existing stuff, cut and paste, etc. And if you think about it, if you work really hard to do something cool on this ATC you wouldn't want your group to go and delete it or completely change it on you. Flattened files would prevent that. You could really only add and slightly embellish. It's like the game we used to play in school where everyone adds a few lines to a story and it ends up going in all crazy directions. . .know what I mean?

Anyhow, there's my two cents. One thing that would help is if someone has done this already. Anyone done a digital ATC jam before? Or any type of digital group project? Cuz that would really help! I really have no clue what I'm talking about here people! I just made my first ATC ever like two weeks ago! LOL! So I'm by no means qualified to pass judgement on this stuff. I just wanted to get everyone thinking about it and see if there is any interest in something like this in the first place. Maya obviously liked the idea since she went ahead and put a special section for it in the gallery. And personally I thought it would be pretty stinkin' cool.

Alright now I turn the floor over to you quirkers! Discuss!

I find the idea interesting and I can fully appreciate the problems associated with it. I don't have any answers though.

On the whole, when I create stuff, I tend to use my personal stash or stuff that I created - but again, even if I created something, doesn't mean I want someone else snaffling it on the sly either - I've had my fair share of digital piracy already and it makes me mean.

Perhaps, instead of having a random grouping - you could group together people who have the same kits? Or, perhaps, one or two or three kits could be nominated to be used and thus elminate any potential piracy? Don't know.

Another thought would be to use the free kit we will have for everyone when they reach 500 posts. My 2 cents worth. :-)

Hey great ideas guys! I never thought of the 'use the same kit' thing.

Use the same kit came to mind, and then of course, your own personal stash. But I'm not opposed to flattening the image first either, because Michelle makes a very good point...you don't want your artwork tampered with too much when you send it on.

Thanks for bringing up this idea. I'm sure a lot of people would love to play! Maybe it's something for next month, though, since we have a lot of missions, workouts and what-not going on already. Although, there will just continue to be more wonderful inspirational ideas coming to us, so it probably doesn't matter when we start it if you think about it! LOL!

I know Becky, this place is crazy with activity right now! I have no intention of starting this anytime soon I just wanted to see what everyone thought.

I think we need to put some kind of embargo on new ideas around here for a little while until things settle down LOL! It's getting a little hard to keep up
