View Full Version : Fridge Magnets: Round 2

Nevermore
01-02-2007, 01:45 AM
I would love to get another round started although I would like to keep the time frame fairly long as in sign up is open until January 11 and magnets are not due to be shipped until month end.

I know DAQs read a lot and Karin and I were goofing around when I thought of the idea of illustrating the book cover Max will write about me when he grows up. Along the lines of "Mommy Dearest". Why don't we run with this in a generalised way? Can be your own autobiography or a book your loved one would write or your boss or whatever. Just dream up a book about you. Your mission is to illustrate the front cover.

If the groans are too loud we can change the theme !

Hey Kim! I'm going to have to sit this one out. My mood is so poor lately that I'm afraid the book my kids would write about me right now is "psycho bitch".

Have fun you guys!

Nevermore

Awww Mish, sorry to hear you are not feeling so up. I won't cajole, browbeat or bug ya, okay? But I do wish I could cheer you up! Never mind, life isn't always exclamation marks, is it? Max calls them "excitement marks".

I'm in...hmmm...will have to query the kids on this one. DD16 will undoubtedly have something inspired for me.

Did I miss the email list of traders for this round?

webchyck
01-14-2007, 07:08 PM
Bonnie, it hasn't gone out yet. Kim, do you want me to send out mailing addresses? I think I have 'em for just about everyone.

Nevermore
01-14-2007, 09:43 PM
Becky, that would be sweet of you if you have the time. If not, let me know and I am sure I can do it. Please do note that we aren't due to mail 'em out until the end of the month so there is still lots of time EAGER BEAVERS!!!! Sorry guys, the 11th was my birthday but then we actually celebrated on the 12th and I forgot all about officially closing the list in my joy at getting older and more senile. And completely forgot that you needed addresses.

graybonnie
01-14-2007, 10:40 PM
Happy Birthday!!!! Didn't mean to push for address. I really thought I had trashed them... ask Becky... I have done that before.

01-14-2007, 10:42 PM
Never mind all that! What do you mean chuckling and smirking. Do you know I have gone crazy all night wondering and curious?????????????????????

01-15-2007, 12:27 PM
I just sent the list out to the email addresses I had for everyone. I think we need a new mailing addy for MegB, but other than that, I think it's ship-shape.

MegB
01-15-2007, 01:47 PM
I sent out my new address as a reply to your email, Becky! Thanks for the reminder. I'll call you this week, I need coffee!

Becky, I received your magnet today! As usual, full of symbolism and dare I say a plethora of hidden meanings that we are yet to see! It looks great stuck on my fridge with the others!!!

webchyck
01-20-2007, 10:07 PM
Glad you got it, Alison! It is definitely full of symbolism on purpose for once!

and have found a nice quirky home for it with the others. This is beautiful, Becky.

I have to confess I have worked on my magnet for three weeks now and have decided to toss it and start from scratch. I figure this one just doesn't want to be birthed so what are you going to do? :(

So glad that I am not the only one still "working" on my magnet (actually it is mostly thinking and not working!).

01-24-2007, 12:49 AM
I am hosting this darn thing and I suggested the topic :( You might think I would have had a game plan! And so far, the only one I have gotten is Becky's and it is wonderful but it is hard to inconspicuously steal ideas from just one!:D

kygirl
01-24-2007, 11:43 AM
I'm afraid I'm taking this whole magnet thing too seriously. I'm as anxious over this as I was when I picked out my quirk name. I've been bouncing ideas off my husband for weeks. Oh, I just thought of one: "Donna's Need to Get a Life." :D

Bonnie, what a "yummy" magnet. Love it.

I wish I could take credit for more than just snapping the picture....but it was wonderful! I'm very lucky to have a large group of friends who love to do some serious cooking.

Wow, delish is right! I was looking on the back for the recipe!!! Thank you Bonnie! Wonderful magnet!

ScrapAlice
01-25-2007, 11:38 PM
Becky! Got your magnet and I really do like how you worked all the symbolism. There is a great comic book...wait, don't everyone roll their eyes at once...by David Mack called Kabuki: Metamorphosis that is a real treat to read. Actually, it's more of a graphic novel approach, as are all his stories, and his art is awesome. I am proud to have met him and reproduced some of his art in thread and fabric.

I have finished my magnets except for one final "touch", and will be mailing them shortly. I'm loving this swap already, and only have one magnet so far! Since there is a "no magnet" policy on the fridge here, I will be putting them on my antique washboard that hangs in the sewing room so I can enjoy them more.

graybonnie
01-26-2007, 07:21 AM
Alice....can you post us a picture of your washboard????? Would love to find another way to display our quirks. I tried to have a no magnet policy when the frig was new but my DH just can't resist political cartoon...LOL

akissling
01-26-2007, 10:01 AM
Yes, Alice, I would love to see it too! I am going to buy one of those magnet sheets (like a cork board but metal) for our office because my fridge gets too much abuse! Yes, I am still "working" on my. I hope to have them in the mail by Monday.

ScrapAlice
01-26-2007, 07:24 PM
I am blushing brightly as I write this, because the wash board I was intending to put in my sewing room (usually hangs on the wall in the laundry room) is BRASS! My grandmother had a GOOD one. I used to have a newer one I bought that had a tin rub board where I kept magnets, and also kept them on the doors of a pie safe that has tin inserts in the doors when I had it in the sewing room. Now that it is in the kitchen, it is also observing the no magnet mandate. I was thinking the washboards were one and the same until I brought it in here to actually hang it.

But not to fear! You CAN still get the tin kind, and I had another brainstorm! I collect toys, especially the "domesticated" girlie toys of the 20th century. Included in this are toy sewing machines, toy irons...and ironing boards! The ones from the 50's and 60's are tin! You guessed it...now the magnets are on a couple of them that were too wobbly to stand on their own three/four legs, so I removed the legs and hung them up. Perfect for showing off the cool magnets!

I'll post a pic later this evening in my album and add the link here. Sorry to have mis-spoken about the washboard. Duh. :o

I am writing the "I'm sorry" note that should be with the magnets that I finally mailed about an hour ago! They are in an ugly envelope, without a pretty note or card and no cute sleeve of any kind! I am SORRY! My return address is on the front but that is it! Sometimes the time dominates the effort and since I left it so late that is what you are getting. I'll bet everyone will be rushing to their mailboxes tomorrow huh!!!!!

graybonnie
01-29-2007, 04:28 PM
I'll be rushing to check my mailbox for the latest Alison creation. Remember "extras" are not required nor should you feel guilty about any of this. I'm sure your magnet is smashingly good!

I struggle with my need to be an overachiever and my procrastination! The 2 just don't mix! Thanks Bonnie!

webchyck
01-29-2007, 07:07 PM
overachiever + procrastination = perfectionism

There is no room in ART for perfectionism!

Angst-be-gone, take me away!

MegB
01-29-2007, 07:19 PM
Alison, relax!!! Mine are going to the post office tomorrow, so you're ahead of at least one person! I just put the finishing touches on them and am addressing the envelopes now. (Not puffy this time, sorry Kim!)

I can't wait to see all the wonderful quirkiness!!

Nevermore
01-29-2007, 07:24 PM
Well Meg, you are so busy galivanting around the countryside with fellow quirks I can understand how you didn't have time for extra puffiness :) Who am I to judge if you prefer to hang out in parking lots and take pictures instead of struggling to tie raffia bows at home?

akissling
01-29-2007, 08:01 PM
Oh, Becky, another clever one!! You and Kim should start a vaudville team! If only the digital world allowed for rim shot sounds!!!!

coffeequeen
01-29-2007, 11:46 PM
Alison and Meg, you two are a day ahead of me! I just addressed, stuffed and stamped them and they will go out tomorrow!

Becky...love hate love that equation
overachiever + procrastination = perfectionism
Now there's a battle I;vefought my entire life. Probably if I could take just one of those factors out of the equation, I'd win a few more battles as well! Is it a woman thing, or just an individual thing? I don't know...but it's me for certain.

01-30-2007, 12:24 AM
I am not overachieving, I am very much underachieving! But at last I have my idea (for magnet and Rolodex). Thank the heavens. Should be able to do them both tomorrow. I was stymied! Could have done them tonight but not emotionally stable. Someone said something not nice to me but thought they were doing it in an oh so clever way. I didn't call them on it, don't want to, and have spent the last ten hours telling myself to let it go. But everytime I think it is gone, there it is. I dislike chewing on stuff like that. It goes nowhere. I wish I had thicker skin.

ScrapAlice
01-30-2007, 02:39 AM
Mine probably won't go out until Wednesday, ladies. I have to get some more peel-n-stick magnet stuff at Hobby Lobby, because I messed up a couple of them. They are a little oversized, but since they are fridge magnets, I didn't worry about it. Any smaller and the detail would have been lost, I think. Probably won't be any fancy to these either, unless I have time to doodle on the envelopes tomorrow while waiting at the doctor's office. They will be on the way soon.

Ah, Kim, you sound like me! It won't do you any good for me to tell you that in the grand scheme of things, that nasty remark wasn't worth the breath that was used to utter it, you'll still worry. At least you know that someone understands and empathises. Now give yourself a shake, grit your teeth and smile at that person, with any luck, they'll wonder what you have done to make you smille when you see them and they'll worry for the rest of the week.

Boy, do I know that feeling Kim! I let the hurtful words echo in my head over and over again(usually as I am trying to go to sleep)!!!!! Then I have to do lots of let it go chants! Sorry that some one said something nasty to you. to THEM!!!!!

01-30-2007, 08:02 PM
Ah, thanks Judith and Alison. The problem is, I had it coming. It wasn't the substance but rather the delivery. As you both probably know, even mature grown up people DO NOT LIKE BEING TOLD THEY ARE WRONG even if they are but especially hate it when it is done in a stupid way. I think part of the reason I can't let it go is because I know I was wrong. There is no quick fix (this is not an apology situation. I always apologise when I am wrong) but rather will require a course of conduct over a long haul which is why I can't let it burn me--will be months!

I do thank you for understanding. Sometimes I get perturbed that I turn to the internet for real support! (The deliverer of the lethal weapon was a "friend"). And then I think, why? Why should that bother me? There are limitations on any relationship and the internet certainly has some but it also had some major strengths!

On the plus side, started my third magnet this morning and I think it is going to go out this week. Finally, have something I can send.

01-31-2007, 06:09 PM
Grrrr...I put all the magnets in the box yesterday, all posted except yours that needed special stamps for Canada. Our postal service brags about curbside service, so I put $3 in there with the 2 unposted figuring she would know what to do with it...well....PFFFFT! I got them back today with "Insufficient Postage" stamped across the front and my change in a seperate envelope. She apparently hadn't noticed they were going to Canada and popped regular stamps on them!

Soooo, I will be crossing off that marking, adding another stamp and popping them off tomorrow- again! I really am sorry for the delay. The envelope will look interesting for sure!

01-31-2007, 07:45 PM
You are ahead of me! I did decide what I wanted to do and then took a two day detour through backing up my machine during which time I lost my CD drives. That took another day to tweak. But everything looks good again (huge sigh of relief) and I will soldier on. I wish I had a lovely postal excuse but I doubt they will co operate in marking up the envelope etcetera. Methinks the money in the envelope was merely a bribe...

I finally finished printing mine out. I tell you, if I were not in a swap, I would have jettisoned this project long ago. Some things were just not meant to be! Struggling is one thing but this ended up being wrenched out of me and I am not thrilled with the darn magnet! Regardless, they will be mailed tomorrow. I am sorry I am so late! And now I must work on the JANUARY rolodex that was due a week ago :( The only good news on that front is that I don't have to worry about printing and mailing :p

The horror of the whole thing is I suggested both topics. Next time, going to keep my mouth shut unless I have something in mind!

I did notice a significant decrease in magnet players this round so I wonder if people want to continue? What about giving it a break for a month? Please post some feedback. I will play again for sure BUT I WON'T SUGGEST A TOPIC!!!

kygirl
02-02-2007, 12:11 AM
Kim, I think the topic was a great one, though I had trouble coming up with a title. I wanted to be honest, but not full of angst. My guess is that participation was down simply because everybody had so much to do following the holidays.

Alison, I received your magnet today. I bet you could tell all kinds of stories about the people you've had to deal with as a librarian. Maybe you really should write a book.

MegB
02-02-2007, 02:28 AM
I liked the topic, Kim! I had a hard time thinking of what to do, but I thought it was a fun one!

As for timing, January is notoriously slow on the digi-boards. But I do think we should take a month between each round to *ahem* let the post office workers get our magnets to each other. 'Cause, you know, we all mailed them out weeks ago and they're still not here! Obviously the post office is understaffed after the holidays. Obviously.

akissling
02-02-2007, 08:55 AM
Again, I over-extended myself. I would like a small break but would love to do it again!!! I actually like doing them because they are less tedious than ATCs. I love ATCs too but my modge-podge ritual is sticky and time consuming! I just dread that part!!!.

akissling
02-02-2007, 08:58 AM
ps I really loved the Janus topic too! Personally I think it is a great exercise of the mind to figure out how to interpret the theme into a layout. Even though I sometimes wine about how my mind is blocked, once I get going it is usually ok. Not that I turn in a masterpiece every time but I do like stretching the old brain a bit!!!!

webchyck
02-02-2007, 07:03 PM
I received three magnets today and one yesterday (or was it the day before yesterday...I don't know...I've not been feeling well the past couple of days). I love Laurie's Point of View---pink is good! Donna's title is perfect for her! And Alison, you silly librarian, you! Love yours! Meg's came the other day...I love her little post-its! All inspired! Thanks!

Maybe what we should do is Dexxies one month; Magnets the next, with the regular ATC swap each month. That way the most anyone would have to do is two.

02-02-2007, 07:33 PM
I wish this thread wasn't buried here, I may repost this in the community so it can be on top. I really would like to keep all three challenges going for as long as I have breath in my body but I would like a bit of a break. Personally, I like the idea of continuing the ATC trade monthly because it forces me to use my real life skills (oh oh oh coughing) and that is always a huge challenge. I would be very happy to do dexxie/magnet/dexxie or anything else we can think of to throw in the mix. We should remember that some of us are also doing the quirkle journal now, too, so that adds up to a bit of time commitment. Not to forget the Urban challenge thing which I haven't even gotten to try yet!

You know, for such a small quiet site, we sure have a lot of interesting cool stuff going on in a regular, sustained way. By golly, we really are like a wee commune, no?

I'm casting my ballot for the every-other-month slot as well. LOVE doing these, but doing quirky journal as well, and I have to admit, quirking doesn't come quite as easily to me as traditional igi-scrap (heee...can I use those two words in the same sentence?) I love Quirk- it gives me a chance to spread my wings and fly in some new directions...(OH! I think I might finally have an idea for the quirk journal page I'm supposed to be doing, Kim! :D ) but do feel pretty stretched for time. But as much as I love these, if you all decide monthly is the way to go, then I'm still in!

I got Alison's, Donna's and Meg's! They are wonderful! You gals never cease to amaze me with your creativity and skill! Thank you!

Meg, you are the magnet magnate! I have to love those post its. What I love the most is the small detail--they all have exclamation marks except the "late". It sits, unadorned, sad, just a fact, Jack. Late. You are brilliant at this.

Bonnie, on both the card and the magnet whatever bevelling you used on the "is in the sauce" was fantastic. I confess I rubbed my finger along the card just to make sure you weren't cheating. Yup, strictly digital there but boy does it look 3D!

Hey, some more! Okay, KJ McLean, I gulped my coffee backwards at the surgically removed mouse... Enough said?

Didn't help my recovery to read "She can't even find her date due stamp". Oh oh oh. Black dots---I have forgotten to keep looking for your secret signature, not so secret on this one.

Laurie I have a little niece who is obsessed by pink to the point of, well, obsession :) I am going to steal your concept and do a magnet for her (she actually wants to open a store when she grows up to sell pink things. She doesn't care WHAT as long as it is pink. Just hope she doesn't turn into a pig farmer, KWIM? I have nothing against pig farmers but farming is a tough life).

When my daughter was 5, she insisted she was going to have a pink jeep "just like Barbie's." She still wants one. Maybe I should hide that magnet when she visits this weekend.

And now for a confession: When I got my magnet from Kim (magnificent, of course), it dawned on me that I never mailed my international magnets. They've been sitting in my purse for weeks. I'm so sorry. I'll mail them this weekend when I can steal my husband's car. My car's check engine light is flashing and I'm scared to pull it out of the driveway.

It doesn't feel like steel, Kim, feels more like plastic with a light metal coating of some sort, but what do I know? Magnets stick to it. Very cool. It's also a dry erase board.

Many thanks to all of you who swapped magnets with me. You should be receiving mine shortly, as they went out last week. Such a diverse batch of takes on a theme. I love it!

Alice! I got yours today! What a hoot! I love the fur cap and that you DARED to wear plaid! Definitely made me smile, so much that my son sitting on the other side of the room said, "Oh mom's grinning, she must have gotten another quirk thing!"

Yeah, that's me in my Polly Crockett hat at age 2 or thereabouts. Little girls didn't get Davy Crockett hats. As I'm sure you've guessed, that's a parody on my favorite comic book character movie. I even found a font called "Daredevil", so it was perfect.

Yes! Yes! the braille rocks and makes it so much more an Alice creation! Thanks Alice, your totaling rocking magnet arrived yesterday.

And KJ love the autobiography! I would want to my computer habits in prints... jeez only the gray dogs know how much time I spend playing.

Alice, I let out a little scream when I finally unfolded your neat envelope. How good is this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just flipping brilliant! The fact that you made it book shape just slays me.

Is there something about the braille I don't know? Please let me know. Love love love love love it!

You have to turn the "book" sideways so the spine is toward you. That way, the braille reads correctly. (That's the format for labeling the covers of books, btw.) It just says "Alice". The first dot is the capital letter sign, then the five letters follow.

I've been studying to possibly become a braille transcriber for the past couple of years. I did the braille on these with the slate and stylus method, which means you actually write it backwards so the embossing is right side up.

How many of you saw the movie "Daredevil" with Ben Affleck? This is a parody of the movie poster for that. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0287978/posters

How many of you know who wrote the "cover blurb"? ;)
