Oh yeah...I have a full-blown case of NAQRHD! Boy, that's fun to say! LOL :D

I was in the kitchen starting dinner, and DH pulled a can of peanuts out of the cabinet. I sang out "sometimes you feel like a nut..." and he responded with "sometimes you're married to one..." if that tells you anything. LOL!

LOL Jessica!!

My day hasn't been the greatest. I'm starting a new job next Thursday so I get this employment package in the mail this afternoon filled with all the forms, contracts, etc. I need to sign and it's all this crap like banking and tax info so they can put me on payroll, and security clearance stuff so I have try to remember all the addresses and phone numbers of the places I've lived in the last 5 years, etc. I've been filling out forms for 3 hours! And what makes everything worse is that they sent everything to me in French even though the woman who hired me knows full well I prefer English. As much as I consider myself fluently bilingual these forms are just a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo and ten-foot long words I've never heard in my life.
UGH!!! IDIOTS (<---say that like Napoleon ;))

Sorry. Just had to rant there for a second.

Anyway, hopefully I can get this over with soon so I can sit down and scrap. I have a Lord of the Rings layout calling my name . . .

Wow! 3 hours of forms and in French! Yikes! Hope you're nearing the end :) As for me, I feel like I've been running all day - had to clean the house this morning before work (since I was lazy and didn't do it last night and one of DH's friends is coming by), then had to go to some continuing education stuff, then to the bakery to look at cakes for a friends shower over lunch and now I'm finally in the office trying to get a little done - obviously not doing well as I am quirking instead of working LOL And, somewhere around 2pm I realized that although I had planned on crock pot pork chops for dinner, I didn't actually put it in, so I think we're looking at Mexican food from the taco stand on the way home - that makes everything better :)

This has been a surprisingly mellow day around here. And any day is a good day when I get to create something. A lot of people know that I am a FlyLady proponent, so I don't spend scads of time doing housework/laundry anymore. I am actually trying to find ways to FILL UP the six hours my youngest is at school!

You all make me laugh so much! I am a major slacker here lately. I used to be a Flybaby, but then I thought I was too cool for it and now I'm back to Chaos again. I have my moments, but right now I am in major need of some decluttering. Does anybody want a bunch of paper scrapping supplies?

Jessica, too funny about your dh.
MG, I cannot wait to see the LOTR layout (and all your Napoleon stuff makes me laugh out loud every time)

I've got leftovers planned for dinner tonight, so I'm really just slacking off and making ATCs that have been in my head forever. I should be napping. I need more tea...

Boy, I am the worlds finest house messier. Another one of my quirks. I with you Donna, been on this site quite a bit. I love, love, love it. Today was crazy driving around, Theophostic appointment, kids gymnastic, my piano lesson, off to the library for the WiFi connect to download for my CT duties. Craziness. I've not gotten a single creative thing done. But, I've got ideas!

Obviously not doing well as I am quirking instead of working

Quirking instead of working...that's the story of me at work since I started digi scrapping...I'm valuable enough at this point for my experience and expertise which is a good thing cause if they knew how much time I was quirking my duties (quirking off?), I would be out of a job!

Oh well, others take cigarette breaks, I take quirk breaks...er lots and lots of them...

I'm fine now and no longer over quirked - LOL. This morning, after dropping off my DD at school, I went home, sat down in front of the computer, logged onto here and continued my comment marathon. I ended up commenting, I hope, on every single quirk in the Digital Studio gallery. I'm working my way through the Member Galleries as I noticed there are quirks there, which are not elsewhere - I must be nuts.

Thanks for asking :)

OMgoodness!! How long did it take you to get there? I just can't can't seem to get that together and it's been years for me!! But I guess it doesn't help with my ADD and all!

Oh that's so true...ADD is a unique challenge for FlyBabies. You know, it's hard for me to say how long it's taken me to get here. I've been a FlyBaby for about a year, I guess, but the truth is, I'm probably a BO as Marla says (born-organized). We were regularly decluttering because I don't like clutter, so it wasn't complete CHAOS (can't have anyone over syndrome) but the thing is I would still get REBELLIOUS about routine stuff like cleaning bathrooms and washing sheets! So, realizing it's just going to take 15 minutes (or less) at a time to do routine housework blesses my thinker. I also felt like I had to do the whole week's laundry in ONE DAY--about 12 loads usually. Now, I do two-three a day. I also had a TERRIBLE time with meal planning, so Saving Dinner really helped me get that demon whipped--well, it's backed into a corner anyway...doesn't bug me too much anymore. What I'm really working on right now is the BODY CLUTTER and the stinkin' thinkin' that got my body so cluttered to begin with. 31.5 pounds so far and some major changes in the way I eat, spend time, and take care of myself. Went to the doctor for the first time in 7 years, got on some medication I've needed for a long time, and am feeling much better, hopeful about getting rid of the body clutter one baby step at a time. It's kind of like they say in AA...it works if you work
it. And I want to work it because I want to FLY (finally love yourself)

EDIT: I came back in here to edit this because I have to say that I am guessing that clutter and this "CHAOS" Marla talks about it is probably quite pervasive among artistic and creative people, the kind of people who are easily distracted and just want to play all day, who balk at routines and just want to live in the moment, who never put anything away...but what they don't realize is how it is damaging their REAL creativity and freedom because they are almost enslaved by the CHAOS. This is why I highly recommend FlyLady to everyone--even making some of the simple changes she suggests will bring more peace to your home. I get really nasty when people get all uppity about the shoe thing (she advocates tie-on shoes be worn all day)--if you're used to barefoot, then try a slipper or a flip-flop...if you're used to flip-flops put on strap on sandals (like Clarks)...if you're used to Clarks, put on some Keds...take even THIS change one baby step at a time. It's not a competition or a race or anything...it's just learning to make some routines that fit into your life that really do make things go more smoothly. I know the decluttering has got to be totally overwhelming for some people, but I think most of us would agree that trying to fill the emptiness in our hearts with more stuff did not work out so well for us...most of that clutter can just GO and then you can make room for the LOVE you need and deserve.

Okay, now I'm starting to sound like FlyLady jr. or something!

Can someone clue me on flybabies and flyladies and all that. Never heard of the term.

I have a dual weird artist (goof off, play all day, dawdle around, stay up till the wee hours) and control freak (all my ducks on a row, NO CLUTTER) nature. The latter is very helpful as I am in the IT/computer field. The former draws me to take numerous quirk breaks like all day!

I'm assuming it's okay to share a link since it is totally unrelated to the topic here: FlyLady (http://www.flylady.net/). Basically, it is all about getting into the routine of cleaning in small spurts throughout the day, controlling and maintaining clutter. So far, I have only mastered keeping my kitchen sink clean (most of the time). I like to do a '27-fling-boogie' or whatever it is called every couple days because with four boys... it seems like trash and junk just falls out of the ceiling sometimes.

This is me too. I took a personality test and I am a "Bean Counter" - I'm not supposed to be creative at all. But as my parents always encouraged it (I believe my father is a blocked creative), I have developed some creative traits I normally wouldn't have.

This does not mean my house is clean though! It just means that I get paralyzed when it's not!

I'm quirking off too (great term Debra!). Perhaps it's better to say quirking at work. Anyway, just trying to get caught up on what's going on around here because I will be out of commission ALL weekend. Sooooo sad! I'm flying in my employees from Little Rock, Arkansas (we own a business up there as well) and we have to entertain them all evening. Then tomorrow and Sunday we have training meetings all day and dinners at night. YUCK! No computer time for me.

As far as a clean house ... LOL! That just doesn't happen for me. With 4 young kids it's just a disaster. I do 2 or 3 loads of laundry every day but it doesn't seem like it. Just pop a load in during breakfast and then before I go to work I put that load in the dryer and another in the washer. After work I usually do one more. It works. And we always have clean clothes but the rest of the house if full of schoolwork, backpacks, toys ... LOL!

I wish someone could get my DH to look at FlyLady - he is such a clutter bug! I used to get all upset about it but in order to live with him, I had to live with it and now it doesn't bother me, only occasionally do I loose it and start throwing things away.

My house is a mess - it's never been this messy in all my life - ever! I'm 41, so that's a long time - LOL.

Why tie up shoes? I don't get that at all. When I got out, i wear strap up shoes, does that count?

AmyK
05-05-2006, 07:54 PM
I've always understood her shoe point to be that you act as you are dressed. So if you are wearing shoes, you are more "ready to go" than if you weren't. And if you wear lace up shoes, you can't kick them off on a whim. I think it really does help get you in gear, and I find I do more when I'm dressed to work.

My very first day on Flylady (two years ago this month! You should have seen the state of squalor we lived in then - I can hardly bear looking at my first-born's baby pictures) I tied on my lace-up shoes, shined my sink, and promptly fell asleep on the couch with my shoes still on. I so missed the point. :p

I have the FlyLady book, signed up on the web site and all. The emails just got to me! Deleting the emails took up so much time I didn't have time to do the exercises. Plus my favorite shoes are my Birkenstock clogs. I like things tidy but I am a big procrastinator and time waster. (and I say that proudly) I usually waste most of the day scrapping and on the MB's then get busy 2 hours before DH gets home. Terrible, I know but after working as an RN for 25 years, it is kinda fun is be a stay at home slacker! I don't do this everyday, mind you, too much guilt for that.

My day has been full of work, I just got a job taking photos for a realtor. I may be able to support my habit now. I'm also trying to narrow down what exactly I want for my camera. I shopping for the Canon 30D but figuring out which lenses I want is killing me. Anyone care to comment. This is my first SLR so I really haven't got a good feel. We have a separate room for the computers - some evenings it's so funny as I'm on the computer, DH is on the computer and DD (5 - who's had her own since she was 3!!!), is also on the computer - not too sure if it's a good thing or not he works in the industry - LOL. Hey - the new job sounds awesome Ursula! I would love to do something like this.

I can't say much about the Canon 30D. I have an Olympus E-300. A couple months ago, it fell out of my camera bag (totally my fault - I admit) and landed on the lens...and it's not covered under the warranty (ugh). So... instead of going with the same lens that came in the kit, I have been trying to decide which lens I would use the most often. I really would love something versatile because I honestly don't see myself changing lenses often at all - at least until I am closer to mastering more of the SLR features and techniques :o

I'm also in the market for a new printer, if anyone wants to rack up some posts by giving their recommendations! ;)

I was lucky enough to get the Canon Digital Rebel D10 a while back for a good price because the new models were coming out. I have two lenses but I am somewhat lazy so I rarely change it. We used SLR's for years before digi, then when we switched to digi used a Canon PowerShot 45. I still take that one if I am going somewhere with a lot of moister, sand or dust or don't want to take the heavier one. I can't say that I am a particularly good photographer. I would like to improve on that!

Jessica, I have an Epson Stylus Photo R800 that I love. It has 8 separate ink cartridges, so you only have to buy the one you need. It's not a large format, though - just prints your standard letter size as well as CDs but I don't scrap in 12x12 anyway. It makes gorgeous prints, in my opinion!

Printer-wise I have always gotten HP products and been happy with them. I use a HP PhotoSmart, and I have the 9300 which is the wide format printer.
Both do an excellent printing job but the wide format doesn't handle thick cardstock that well.

As far as printer's go, I've always stuck with Epson, they've had a good reputation as far as archival quality printing and they make beautiful prints. I think HP has now come out with archival inks but I don't know much about them. I think sending your work out is probably cheaper and more reliabel in the long run.

I've settleed on the camera, but not the lenses. Hope to sit down with dh tonight and work out some of the questions.

Well, a few months ago I was contacted by the founder of Scrapbook & Cards Today, which is a new Canadian magazine that is distributed freely in scrapbook stores. She was really interested in digital scrapping in general, but she asked me to write an article about using digital supplies in conjunction with traditional supplies. This has always been a cool concept to me, because I still scrap "hands-on", so I was eager to do the article. I'm not sure yet how much of my actual artwork (3 layouts & one card) will go into the magazine, but I also created a free printable - nothing fancy, but still... I'm excited, as I haven't really been published before (unless you count two altered rolodex's that came out in a super late edition of Coorespondence Art last year).

Everything will be in the summer issue, and I get more excited the closer it gets. Are the giddy moments to be expected? I go from giddy (yay! I get to see my stuff in super gloss print) to embarrassed (oh crap, what if people think my article is stupid?) to scared (they're going to look at me!! eeek!) ...

Anyway, if I ever get another chance to do something like this...I'm going all out quirk! :D

Wow Jessica, that's AWESOME! Big congrats to you! Emotional rollercoasters are surely to be expected. Just take chocholate!

Oh Jess, that is WAY too cool! Congratulations! I've been published twice and I always feel that way too. Actually, I'm going through the same rollercoaster over this stupid Ultimate contest... so silly! I'm sure your article is fantastico!

Ya'll wanna here something funny. I just two LO today for a design team I am on. I thought both of them to be extremely flat, blah, ordinary, boooorrrrinngggg! So I posted them to several gallerys like a good DT member, and guess what. I've gotten more looks from these blah LO than anything I've posted in weeks. Now, mind you, I've been posting my way cool artsy stuff that I love. I guess the rest of the world doesn't have the same appreciation for my creative side as all of you.

Besides, it drained me of all available creativity. I wanted to make it funky and wierd, but figured I should not. Oh well, glad I have you guys to play with.

I'm glad you're here to play too, Ursula. I'm glad for all of you here! I did a layout yesterday that was about half and half - I did a few quirky things, but still kept it pretty tame... and it's been one of my most "popular" layouts in months. I really want to go all out but I'm still holding myself back on the "traditional" scrapping side...

LOL Ursula! Not long ago I conducted a VERY scientific experiment to see how my cutesy layouts fair against my "other" ones. I started a layout while my husband was shaving and was done with it by the time he got out of the shower so we're talking 15 minutes max. NO journaling at all (it almost killed me) ... and as I heard the shower water turn off, I slapped on some dumb title. Guess what - I got like 10 comments in no time. Mind you - it was very pink and my daughter is adorable ... but 10 comments!! ROFL! I have taken days to complete some layouts where every little detail was painstakingly thought about and only received 1 or 2 comments. But you know, it really doesn't bother me. When I am happy with a layout - I feel successful. The scrapping are for just that ... scrapping. We are more into the art aspect and that's why this site is so good for us.

For me, I think there's room for both - although I never seem to have enough time for anything LOL - but really, I kind of look at it as the difference between sketching and painting - both fun, just different. I like doing more straightforward scrapbook designs, but I like doing quirky stuff too - I've started to blend the two more, and I definitely think there's a lot of room for quirkiness in the traditional scrapbook layout, but I don't mind living a bit split personalitish (yeah, that's a word) LOL

I think we are often surprised at what layouts get comments. It is just such a subjective thing. I still feel disappointed when something I spend tons of time on only gets one or two comments but I am really trying to get over that. Sometimes that you just can't help taking it personally, I guess.

I haven't read this thread before so I got to read nine pages. What an interesting conversation. I gave a little thought to posting 89 responses a la Gina, lol! but have basically given up on reaching the posting deadline. My posts are just too darn long.

Speaking of which, I got the Flylady purple ostrich duster for my birthday. It is to die for and I would never ever ever use it for dusting. I might consider wearing it as some form of accessory if I can figure it out (double sided tape usually works to adhere foreign objects to my body so that might be my weapon of choice).

Mishou, I am dying to see your LOTR layout. I did one of Max many moons ago and when I read you spoke Elvish I filed that away in my "wait till you know her long enough" cabinet as I am dying to trade favours --for me, you will translate the title of the layout into Elvish.

Jessica, cool beans! I don't really go to scrap stores but I hope you remind everyone when the publication comes out so I can stop by and grab it and drop your name to anyone standing around in the store...

Comments on layouts--I give up. The most comments I ever got was for a piece that I said was done following a tutorial for how to use a lot of bad pictures. And while I don't believe anything is new under the sun, I have done a couple of pieces that were extremely technically different and unique that received only those kind hearted comments that are kind but not enthused if you know what I mean. If I am being honest, I do rely a lot on comments because I have no real life support

I bought a wide format printer (Canon i9900) but don't use 12 x 12 much. It is great for 11 x 17. I enjoy it but could live without it. On the other hand I kicked and screamed for ages before I bought a decent scanner and realised after the first scan that I should have had one from the beginning.

LOL Nevermore! I said I tried to learn Elvish . .. didn't say I got very far!
How 'bout Dwarfish runes? LOL That I might be able to pull off. . . .
I started that LOTR layout the day I first made that post about it and I just can't seem to finish it. Maybe I'll just post the photo LOL

That may be the most generous compliment I've recieved in a while Robyn, thanks. Oh, wait, I'm not elven, you weren't even talking about me. bummer.

About comments on LO. I have been astonished sometimes at the things people read into artwork. For me, I'm not all that deep and if it's meant to mean something, I usually write about it. so sometimes folks see stuff that I didn't even know was there and I just think, cool, I'm deeper than I thought. LOL but seriously, I wonder if the 'great artists' could hear what people have to say about "what they were thinking when they painted this", I just wonder if they would be ROTFL. It cracks me up how sure we are about what some dead person was thinking when they wrote this or that book or whatever. Seems to me like it's all a crap shoot!

Hey Nevermore, will you make a layout of your duster? pretty please?? I keep thinking I want to get one for myself (especially since hubby broke my wool duster), but I haven't been sure I want to spend so much.

Oh, Belles, sorry you're feeling so awful today. We're having a rainy, dreary day here today, so I think I'm going to go do some paper scrapping.

Loved all the talk about folks commenting on your layouts. I found out quite early on that what I thought was good and what the average scrapbooker thought was good was quite different. Still not sure which one of us was right. :)

And I agree...all my cutesy stuff usually get more responses!! As for the traditional stuff...they almost never got any comments and I realize now because they were never the latest trend or technique or sketch...especially since as the natural rebel I am I would do what I wanted to do or felt and that was always not wanting to do what everyone else is! lol!

I will tell you what I think is downright strange. Amy, not just you BUT SOMEONE ON ANOTHER BOARD, has asked me to scrap my purple feather duster. I will definitely have to tackle it (I have never had a commission before let alone two people asking for the same thing). But it is far more tactile than visual if you know what I mean.

Gina, I know! I know!~ about the posting but things are so seriously out of kilter here (work has gone into hyperdrive, roof is leaking, washing machine is leaking, kitchen is torn apart to allow new machine to be delivered but delivery men have refused to deliver, can't find a machine I can move down there, dirty laundry is stacked to the rafters, unexpected international visitors, and I think I am getting my period). I have decided not to go for the posting thing because I am just too stressed.

I did a cutesy poo layout of my kid as a hobbit. And my kid as Hansel. I am going to post them even though this is not a cutesy poo layout kind of place. It is definitely a LOTR kinda place and Hansel really isn't supposed to be cutesy but actually frightening.

I can't say there is any deep meaning in my artwork or layouts, I usually say whatever is obvious. I don't want to spend time trying to make something that has a statement or message, although I enjoy that kind of thing too when somebody does it. I just want to have fun. If there is a meaning or a message, okay too, but I don't want to fake it. I do think it is cool when someone looks at your artwork and says "oh that such and such brings your eye right to the so and so." You know, something you may have not even intended but it is good. (Rambling now, sorry!)

Nevermore - sorry to hear about everything happening at once! Such a downer.

As to Hansel and Gretal - I agree with you - I love that bit in Addams Family Values (the second one), where Morticia gets a job in a kindergarten and she's telling the story of Hansel and Gretal and how the horrible kids pushed the witch in the oven - makes me laugh everytime, mainly because as a kid, I always thought that Hansel and Gretal were being overly vicious
