Great job with the Winter Wonderland theme, everyone! I loved every card I received! So, are you ready for a new theme? Well, in honor of the month (which includes Valentine's Day) and in honor of Robyn making it big designing, I've chosen the theme The Lovers, which is the name of Robyn's first ATC-making kit. (http://www.scrapartist.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&manufacturers_id=22&products_id=734)

Basically, think about couples and see where it leads, okay?

If you want to play this month, send me an email (webchyck@comcast.net)with the subject: FEBRUARY SWAP. Please include your name, mailing address and email address (for you veterans, just reply to this thread saying you're participating...I have your info...unless it's changed). You have until midnight Eastern on February 7th to sign up. On the 8th everyone who has registered will receive a list of all the other artists with whom they will be trading. You will then have until February 28th (oh my gosh! that's 3 less days this month!) to create, print, and mail your artist trading cards to the other participants. (Keep postal rates in mind before you sign up as you are responsible for mailing the cards yourself. If we have enough participants in a particular country, we can group them together, otherwise it will be an international endeavor.) Each swap group will have no more than 9 participants (including yourself). You may create one ATC based on the theme and replicate it for everyone or you may create nine unique ATCs to send out. You may also use any combination of paper and digital you like for this swap.

If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We do have a lot of information about Artist Trading Cards (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/forum/../articles/article_atc_becky_march2006.htm) in an an ARTicle in our Resource section that might answer any questions you have.

Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with...I bet there will be some juicy cards this month!

Good grief, Judith, you either are really fast or you knew about the swap theme in advance. In either case, good for you!

I trying to think really hard about what I will do for mine. Well, even if it is a short month (Feb... 28 days....), I think I'll come up with something.

By the way, what are you doing with all of your cards?
Well, so far I have been bundling each month's cards and placing them in an old wooden recipe box that belonged to my grandmother. Each current month is lined up on the dining table until the collection is complete, then they are tucked away when the next set starts to arrive. If I want to look at them, I can open the 'treasure box' and 'unwrap' each bundle to enjoy once more. It is starting to get full however, so I am going to have to figure out an alternative in a couple of months. But until then, that's it :o

I have mine in my nifty "book" from European Papers (3 ringed binder with plastic inserts)! I then rotate some on my fabric board (the kind with the ribbon to keep the items in place) and the rest go in the book. I like the idea of a revolving display!!!

I started off putting mine in an album, but it is getting full now, so I shall have to put my thinking cap on.

It was done quite some time ago but I have to try your technique of mounting on ribbon. They didn't have it at my LSS yesterday so I am going to Michaels. I figure red or pink velvet is a Valentine's gimme! Although I guess it depends on if it is doublesided? Haven't quite worked out the mechanics yet but I do love the look you get with it.

Becky, don't worry, I did HEARTS, lots of HEARTS, and some pop-up ones at that. We all know "It's about the LOVERS!"

And btw, I'm just addressing my envelopes, I love the Valentine stamps I got at the post office.

AND, I even printed out Maya's ATC envelopes to put my ATCs in (which I should have done for those glitter ones last month)... Oh, it'll still be a surprise, cause you don't know what they look like or, even if you do, you don't know which one you'll get. Just have to put a few finishing touches and off they will go.

Pfff, glad to hear that I HAD to use glitter. :D I had to do some shopping today for the ATC also extra embellies and so, guess what! Is there a new stand on the market with tons of old vintage sheets with roses, angels, butterflies, birds and so on, like the ones which are in the ATC kit of Robyn. I couldn't find the translation in English for it, we call them poetry-illustrations. Well it was a long and joyfull afternoon.

I thought they were pretty easy to assemble. I used my trimmer on the straight edges and then trimmed with scissors...but I do realize this may be a little bit of a stretch for the scissor-impaired among us. A couple of swipes with the tape runner and they are sealed up.

I should have gone to Michaels' today to get more embellies since the group is so large and to get ribbon but I napped instead. Yup, slept away my last afternoon of vacation. Now, that was nice!!!

Actually, my printer is only for 8.5 x 11 inch paper, so I actually copied each envelope separately onto it's own .png file and then I printed each one off. That way, the envelope was in the middle of the paper. If I had put both of them on the same page for printing with my printer, they would have had to be "resized to fit on the page" which would have made them smaller than I wanted them to be and the ATC would NOT have fit in them.

Anyway, as Becky said, I used my paper trimmer and just wacked off the sides (small tip: if you are using the trimmer near a window, you can actually see where the edge of the "piece" needs to be so you cut it just right.) and then used my scissors to round the edges (or get the "gunk" out of the edges). Then I just folded them - not hard to do, and put the ATC in them. I didn't even (sorry, Becky) put the double stick tape on the edges. #1, because I don't have that kind of tape, and #2, knowing me, I would put the tape on, it would go over the edge and the ATC would be stuck to it and the ATC envelope and I would be so unhappy that I had to redo everything!!!!

So, in a nutshell, YES, it was very easy to do.

(Now, I want to know if this is enough of an inspiration to have a Raven's Ramblings dedicated to me?)

Well, Kim, I was actually OFF of my computer for a good while yesterday after I posted my message, so I didn't even see your question until this morning. So, as one "inexperienced" person to another, GO FOR IT.

And if you think you are scissor impared, use one or two of those really cute scissors that have a wavy edge or decorative edge to them so no one will know if you made a teeny error in the cutting. What the heck, you are supposed to have fun, right? (Also a good excuse to go to Michaels or Wal-Mart so you can look at the multi-decorative scissors and choose one or two or six...)

Yes, I agree, off my computer is definitely better than off my rocker....

And I just thought of something else about using scissors. I don't know if anyone has ever told you this, Kim, but when you are cutting a shape, you are supposed to turn the paper, not the scissors. That gives you a better cut and control of the paper. Only move the scissors before you get to the very end of the point, because you don't want a big chunk out of the paper when the scissors actually close.

Mar, isn't that the joy of digital? Just whip off a set for him!

But maybe you are like me and things aren't chop chop chop swiiiiiiiiiiipppppppppe chop lick done.

This is the sound of my last hour, after I returned home triumphant from Michaels with THE PERFECT 3 INCH RIBBON.

Hmmm. Oh oh. Supposed to be 2 1/2 inches wide not 3. *&^%%. I wonder if I can cut Ribbon with my Fiskars? Slide, slide, slide, slide, slide "Cut !@*&(** you cut!" No, can't cut ribbon with Fiskars. Cut with scissors. Okay, nice wavy line there. Resize ATCs to shrink to fit on ribbon. Print on Matte Paper. Something is very very very wrong. Reprint on glossy paper. Better. Cut and glue dot to ribbon. Not staying on tight. Aha! Put laminating cartridge in Xyron. Safety pin tag on and throw that puppy through the Xyron. Oh. *#$$#! All stretched funny. Little threads pulled off and laminated. Petrified.

Honest to Betsy! This is the cutest little card but it is completely bent out of shape by the lamination. Tried gluing instead of glue dots and that just left huge visible glue smears.

Haul Pam's card out of album. Her ribbon is not dethreading (ahhah unravelling). It is just sitting there in a rectangular shape. Decide I hate Pam's guts. I take that back. Sorry Pam.

Back to the drawing board.

It will be blue moon before I get hand made envelopes done!!!!! Take that right off the list for this month!

Nevermore
02-11-2007, 10:53 PM
Well, I have been working on them for a solid 5 hours and I only have 5 done. The first one I did (usually the one I keep because it has the flaws) is the best which gives you some idea of the uphill battle I have been fighting. At this rate, I am going to run out of ribbon and that might not be a bad thing.

I am handwriting out the cards to everyone to let them know what special flaw(s)--some have more than one--their cards have.

I have tried everything under the sun including feeding them in in rows. The fact is, lamination was not the way to go.

I appreciate how the gods keep me humble.

Pam your little MSN Avvy on my screen says you are sick and really tired - please get well soon :)
I seem to remember you had a really tiring Valentines Day last year - was that you selling roses until nearly midnight - just kidding.

Anyhow I posted all my cards this afternoon - all the envies have adorable Koala Bear stamps thanks to Australia Post. All my ATC's are pure and simple digital, I just can't cope with all this fancy hybrid stuff, maybe next month  Lucky for me DH does all the gluing, he is an angel. I don't think he really `got' my card but then maybe no one else will either. Good luck Kim - will I have your card by the end of the month? :) I am still receiving the Winter Wonderlanders, today a really beautiful one arrived from KJ McLean, thank you so much KJ:)

Stupid thing of all, when they where ready I had scanned them all .

Mar, in the past I have created a web page for my uniquely made ATCs for a swap (my ISP provides web space). But you could make a couple of layouts of all the ATCs to post here. I did the same as you and all of mine are unique this time, so I just took one photo of them spread out on cardstock before getting them ready to mail.

Speaking of mail...my U.S. cards went out, but I need to go to the post office to mail my international ones. I thought it was fun to see that we had about half American and half international participants this time!

Judith...hope you feel better soon!

Kim, I'm glad you don't actually hate my guts  The floral ribbon I used was 2.5 inches wide--I only cut length off the roll of it. Sorry you've had troubles...

Helen, yes I'm sick! I got a cold and was knocked flat--I'm so rarely sick, and I can't believe how this has wiped me out. And it is not a good time to be sick as I need energy for long days at the shop--the busiest floral week of the year! Thankfully the owners have been very understanding. I also learned of a death in the family yesterday--my cousin--and that drained emotions. That combined with coughing kept me up most of the night. In the short time I did sleep however, I had a dream with my dad in it--he's been gone nearly two years, and it's the first time I remember dreaming of him. It was so nice to see him!

I can't believe how on top of things most of you are--that's geat! My card is partially designed, but I doubt it will be ready to mail for at least a week or more. I do have stamps, though!

Mailed my international ATCs today! Much to the consternation of the many people in line behind me at the self-serve kiosk (takes a while with several letters to be weighed and posted). I guess Mondays after 1:00 is when all the senior citizens come out to mail their packages for the week, because the post office was swarming! LOL! I thought the lunch crowd would've cleared out by then, but I neglected to account for the large population of seniors in that neighborhood...and what with Valentine's Day just a couple of days away, I'm sure they had many things to mail! LOL! Hey, who doesn't like happy mail...hope everyone enjoys the mail that went out from that P.O. today (because it looked like a LOT!)

Pam, sorry about your cold - please take care.
Judith, feel better soon!
Mar, your dH can NOT have my card!
Kim, I'm waiting with "baited breath" to get my ATC - can't wait to see what the unique quirk is that is on mine.
Becky, I received a fantastically romantic ATC in the mail today. Not only is the ATC wonderful, but I also love the hand stamped card it came in.
I can't believe you sent it Feb 9 and I got it today - Feb 12 (that's remarkable!)

I also sent my ATCs out on Saturday and I must confess, it is a woman's perogative to change her mind. In my case, I caved and actually put glitter on my ATCs.

I really like the international flavor of our ATC swap. Getting the cards via snail mail is so fun. And getting all the interesting stamps is a big part of the fun, too.

If I haven't said thank you to everyone who sent me a card (I just realized I got KJs card recently), I do love each one. It is so meaningful to me to hold the ATC and know that it was personally made by someone I admire. How quirky is that?

Now I have to get serious and do something about my dexxie!!!!

LOL, Victoria. Since I don't have enough current supplies to finish mine having wrecked yards of ribbon to no avail, I am just not sure if these are going or not! Max said he thought they were neat and I said, "Really?" and he said, "Uh, no." So, they stink. It isn't just my imagination.

Cry, you are all making me so thrilled, and I hardly can't wait to received the cards, but I think I have to be 'not so' patient for a few days.

Pam and Judith I hope you both are feeling better now.

Becky I let you know which one you send me.

Victoria, No, I won't give my cards to my DH, they are mine, lol, I had made one especially for him.

I also made two layouts of all the cards which I can post when the swap is over.

My cards has all 'love-couples' and I have used titles of Lovesongs as a little 'quote', ribbons and a lot of glitter and an old vintage print. At least a tiny little real 'lovecharm'. I realised now that that probably could give some problems, metals in letters to the USA?

When I had knew earlier that there be some stamplovers I would send some with the ATC. The Dutch Mail Service is not very creative with stamps to other countries so don't expect to much. But I have a lot of beautiful other Europe Stamps. So who wanted some stamps let me know and I will send a few in the next round.

I am in trouble - not with you, but with my DH. He doesn't usually ring before lunchtime, but when I answered my phone today, he said "Where are you?". Now I know I couldn't get away with anything, :p so I had to confess I was at the post office, he could tell by the noise on my phone that I wasn't in bed where he had told me to stay. "Home, right now, then into a hot bath and your bed, we'll talk about this when I come home!" Eeeep. Anyway, the cards are all on their way to you and the bath is filling with hot scented water as I type. I've had a couple of pills and there is a hot cup of coffee beside me, so i'm doing the right thing ... now. The weather was lovely when I set out for the shops in my buggy, but I didn't realise it was going to turn cloudy and cold when I was there, so I am quite happy to soak in hot bubbles :D .

That's such a bummer, Mar! I've had mail come to me that was partly opened or completely opened with a note from the U.S. Postal Service. Sometimes it's the machinery that can't handle a little extra bulk. Sometimes it's an inspection. In fact, Victoria's envelope looked like someone had started to open it (maybe it got sent to the wrong address first or something), but they stopped before going too far. Weird! Will let you know as soon as anything from The Netherlands shows up here!

No excuse, it is on our front porch but it has been -30 here and I have not been motivated to go outside at all if I can avoid it. This morning I was running late (as usual) but had to send Max out the front door instead of the back so grabbed the mail. There were four of the little envelopes that I KNOW mean cards or magnets.

I went upstairs and put them on my desk and said I can't open them now, I am late. Then I said, okay, just open one to start your rotten gray freezing day off with a smile. So I opened Victoria's. And I can't open it any further because the wrapping is just too gorgeous and I don't want to wreck it. Well, then, I might as well open another one because I haven't really really opened one yet, right? So I opened Mars. Well, now I have to turn on the light so I can see it. And I have to keep looking and can't tear my eyes off of it. I am really late now so I might as well open the last one, right? And there is Becky's marvellous card and ATC. This isn't fair to Victoria, though, is it? Because I opened everybody else's but I didn't fully open hers. So I open it and there are the most adorable giraffes. Oh my!

Needless to say I was very very very late for work~~but I had a huge smile on! Thanks so much for all the great stuff you are creating and sharing. You made my day!

Okay, I am doing a 90 degree shift here. Just came back from Michaels where I purchased a new rotary cutter (as an aside) but more to the point, 2 1/2 inch ribbon. I wasn't able to get the original ribbon in that width. The new ribbon is somewhat "duller" but I will have eliminated cutting both width and length. This will call for some slight modifications to the card but, honestly, I think I am right to abandon my original idea.

The boys are heading out sledding shortly so I will turn my office into a card and ATC factory. If all goes well, they should get mailed tomorrow.

I am so relieved. My poor laminated card was weighing like an albatross around my neck!

Kim, I'm so glad you are pursuing your ribonetry! I am so looking forward to recieving your ATC. Much as you stress over the perfection of your art (and I do understand that), I do believe that anything produced by "Nevermore" is a wonderful thing.

I hope your factory has been much like the production line of a well-oiled car factory. And I hope the results are well worth your duplicate efforts.

As for that albatross, I think you are stuck with it. You put him on your QJ, if you remember, so there is no giving him back....

Forge onward... but please dress warmly when actually posting your artwork. It's been viciously cold outside.

Oh, one last thing.... A-N-T-I-C-P-A-T-I-O-N... you are making us practice patience also. Thank you for that. I need a dose of patience at the moment.

02-18-2007, 07:39 PM
Becky, I am taking this failure remarkably well and have sealed all the envelopes. I admit I had a lot more fun doing the digital part than the real part, which often isn't the case in these trades but it makes up for last month when the digital was killing me and putting the cards together was fun. So, again, there is so much that goes into these that you have to find yourself in synch with SOME part of it!

I tacked a piece of the original ribbon on everybody's card just so you can see how great it would have been...

Because I was in gift certificate mode, I bought an over-the-top stamp set. A beautiful boxxed set with wonderful little pads and six country chic stamps. Even with 40% off I would not have bought it if it wasn't really a present. So now I have to make some cool cards and stuff. It just didn't go with this month's theme.

If we are thinking March any time soon I would love some form of country component so I can use my new stamps on the enclosing cards! In the meanwhile, I do know a lady who lives on a farm so I guess I better write to her.

I know, I still have a Rolodex to do! But I feel so relieved having all my cards ready to fly that I am going to let myself do what Quirks do naturally: play!

P.S. Pam, I think part of what is wrong is that my ribbon frays and yours does not. I might have to get the brand name from you. The new ribbon frayed too but just along two sides instead of four. That is a 50% improvement, huge guffaw of laughter!

Kim, I'm afray-ed I don't know the name off the top of my head, but the next time I'm at Hobby Lobby, I'll take a peek ;)

My personal mechanic (aka the fiance) was busy doing car stuff today (new brakes and tires for him, new spark plugs and an oil change for me), so I sat outside (warm day!) with him and kept busy by cutting out and sticking together my cards, and was at the ready if he needed an extra hand or a tool, or a witty remark (:D). I was able to do it all, and no car grease got near my cards. They are now finished--I didn't think it would happen so soon! Tomorrow is a holiday, so I'll start mailing them Tuesday...

And I received also two lovely Duckies from Helen. When I saw the card I had to smile and it reminds me of two duckies which came over two years in the winter to my garden and lived until spring in my very small pool in the garden. Thank you too for the wonderful card and memory it brings up.

I received cards from Becky and Carolyn on Tuesday. So beautiful and Becky I love your quote. Carolyn your romantic images are perfect and a calendar!! Wow. Then yesterday Mar your card arrived - all the way from The Netherlands to Australia!! and in perfect condition. I can't believe the amount of work you have done on this, it is very special.

Now this page in my album is looking very `pink' and full of hearts and kisses. Because I put my cards in an album I find that I am loving looking at the backs just as much as the fronts, they are all so artistic. As you can see I am definitely becoming an ATC addict. :)

Yep, Mar wins the Golden Scissors Award! I particularly liked my song title, Mar, "Love is a Battlefield" as I was a huge Pat Benatar fan. Cupid with the arrow in the back? That totally reminds me of the ATC I did called Cupid Must Die! Well, there ya go! The brat is dead! LOL! Thanks, Mar!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Lots of thank yous today: Ruth, what a wonderful set of wings on the perfect gift; Kate, I love your quote and the colours are divine; Nevermore, it looks as if you found a photo of my neice, who looks a lot like this if you give her viking red hair and the background paper is so beautiful and I love the ribbon - what the heck, the whole thing is gorgeous! Dee-Dee, I love it, so romantic, I love the colouring and the beautiful paper.

Every one of you ladies have really surpassed yourselves with the ATC cards this month, they are stunning! Thank you for swapping with me.

One of the things I learned in art college was that there are no mistakes in art! I feed myself that statement everytime I think I have blown it. I saw absolutely nothing wrong with your ribbon! Thanks for the award though! ;)

I owe thank yous to Mar (lovely embossing and texture!!), Ruth, Kim, Kate and I will list the rest when I bring my cards up to my office. Each one is so pretty in a very different way!
My ordinary ones are coming shortly. Kim, I love the ribbon idea! Mine are late because I printed them out on muslin but did not like the color so had to redo! I would love a challenge to actually print them on something other than regular paper some day when we run out of other ideas. By the way, I love printing on muslin and have done some pieces for my Mom's quilts I just need white of this one and of course there is no such thing as white ink!!!
Anyway, I will post the other names next time. This was a great swap!!!

2 beautiful cards have arrived here in sunny and very warm Australia from freezing Canada. Ruth yours came on Friday - so special, I just love that adorable little baby with wings. Kate yours arrived this morning. Your card with its explanation was perfect and the card so evocative. Every time I put a card in my album I then have to look again at all my cards and I see more every time - they are truly magical:)

Three thanks I had to give today.

Kim your 'card' is so beautiful and very special. I love the ribbon and the photo of the child.

Denise love your theme, the colors and the little butterfly on the front and back, also a lovely card.

And Pam, O, la,la ...., how naughty, I have put the card away for my DH ;), because he thinks that every card is for him :D.

Thanks Becky for the Golden Scissors Award. I was very suprised to hear that 'Love is a Battlefield' was one of your favorite songs.

I'm still counting cards because they are just 14 days  on their way, next time I bring them by myself, even when I go by boat I think it's faster .

Well the cards are literally flowing into my mailbox this week :) Yesterday one from Alice - so romantic and I love the font; and from Denise - what a sweet couple and a lovely message. Then today 2 more - from Kim, really different with the fabric and the heart token on the back; and one from Pam, great work with the colouring! Pam I think the back of your card was stunning with the vase of flowers. I can see that `bouquet' does suit you very well:)

Sorry--bein' goofy...

Kate--such passion--I love the deeper colors, and your card with the "why" you chose the quote--thank you.
Kim--wonderful sheer ribbon, and how clever to pin on the heart tag! I admit I don't know French, so I looked it up--I learned something--"Look for the woman"--thank you to you too.

What a wonderful month for ATCs. Thank you everyone! I love all my cards, and this gives me a chance to go through them again and say thank you to:
Becky for her passion
Caroline forher book of famous lovers
Helen for her ducks (and I love the Koala stamp, too)
Ruth for her angel baby
Judy for her statuary
Mar for her embossing message about Love (no problem with my post office)
Dee-Dee for her old fashioned ever after
Kate for her oh so red ATC with the 15th century quote
Kim for her many ribbons and the reminder to Look for the lady
Pam-Pie for her risque' bathing beauty
and
Alison for her oh so romantic couple.

I can't tell you all how much I am enjoying these ATCs.

Alice, yours does sound "incredible"; but I just listed the ones I received, so I guess my answer is No, I didn't receive it. I don't have any "young ones" at home so I would not have tossed it as junk mail. Please, resend. And thanks for offering.

Thanks to both of you. You have brightened up a difficult week.
