View Full Version : Fridge Magnets Round Three
Nevermore

There has been some discussion in the Round Two thread about making this challenge be every other month. We don't need to decide that now. But I think we are all agreed that February will be a magnet free month! Seems like all the little quirksters have their fingers in a lot of pots or pies or whatever the expression is.
I would love it if people could post some ideas for the next topic. If I may be so bold, I would like to suggest that neither St. Patrick's Day nor Easter hold any attraction for me (with apologies to the Irish and the Christians). I prefer my fridge art to be year round.
So, let's throw some suggestions on the table. What about American Primitive? I have no clue what that is. But I would like to learn. It sounds colourful and quirk potential-full. Of course, being the quirk I am I would think anything had quirk potentiality, rof.
Any other light bulbs going off?

I think American Primitive could be very imaginative especially if some us throw in some regional aspects. And before Alison, Donna or anyone else starts... I DON'T do hillbillies! West Virginia has some other wonderful primitives.

Well Bonnie, I wouldn't mind doing hill billies! It sounds like you know what American Primitive is which puts you well in the forefront with me. Do you have any links at all to artists or articles that talk about this so I can have a look?

Let me see what I can find for you Kim.
LOL...The hillbilly reference is an old sterotype that is frequently applied to residents of West Virginia.

Yes, re the stereotype. Can you hear the sound track from Deliverance playing?

Yes...LOL...Deliverance fortunately was set a bit futher south.... but it is the same sterotype.
Just googled American primitive and was not surprised that I could not locate a simple straight forward definition. Did find an article which was interesting http://www.terraamericanart.org/scholarship/index.asp?paper=true&key=60&subkey=193 I do agree with the article when I think American primitive I first think of Grandma Moses and Grant Wood.

Cough, cough, so glad to hear you couldn't find anything straightforward. Someone once said my style was a bit American Primitive (since my style changes more than my underwear, this was kinda funny) so I tried to look it up to see what they meant. I even bugged them a little (usually I treat comments like letters to the editor and let people say what they want without comment back) but got nowhere. Glad to hear I am not totally research bereft! Where is Alison when you need her? O Librarian! I will check out the link, thanks.
Bonnie, I have never read an art article before (I am unschooled in this) and I have to say, that was an amazing read! He can write! Now I want to google the pieces he mentions and look at them while rereading the article. Incredibly interesting and informative and fun, too. I think by all the hints dropped that Grandma Moses would have been a fantastic DAQ member as would Mr. Wood. Thanks, this helped a lot!
