I thought I would share a little information about the kinds of ATC swaps we will be hosting here at Digital Art Quirks (DAQ).
First off, we're planning to start with a monthly snail mail swap that will be themed and will involve deadlines. On the first day of the month, the new theme will be posted in the ATC forum and you will have 7 days in which to sign up to participate. (The format of the mail swap post subject line will look like this: MAY 2006 MAIL SWAP: Theme of Swap Here.)
Sign-ups will involve emailing the swap host (for now, me) with your full name, mailing address and email address. On the 8th day, everyone who is participating will receive a list of the other Quirk Members with whom they will be swapping ATCs. There will be up to nine participants in each group. Our thinking on this number is that you can easily fit nine ATCs on one sheet of printer paper (your choice of weight/style)--one for each of the people in the swap and one for yourself. Your group, however, may have fewer participants, depending on the number of artists that sign up.
You will have until the last day of the month to get your ATCs off in the mail (approximately three weeks). It's just good form to try to meet the deadline, but no one will come hunt you down if you don't manage it exactly.
It will always be your choice whether to create a series of ATCs based on the theme (a unique card to each participant) or an edition (a set of identical cards that are numbered). Also your choice in how to present the ATCs via mail. There are trading card sleeves, commercially prepared ATC envelopes that can be printed out and other handmade possibilities for making your trade unique and fun. We can share ideas on this in other threads.
Posting your ATCs to the gallery is optional. My thinking is that it can kind of spoil the surprise if you post before your recipients receive their cards in the mail. There's no hard and fast rule, though, so do whatever brings you joy!
A digital ATC "swap" will really be more like a "share." We will post theme ideas and inspiration in the forum, then participants simply post their ATC in the gallery and link to it in the proper theme's thread. Anyone can post an idea for a digital share. The format for the subject line would be DIGITAL SHARE: Theme goes here. Include any additional information on the inspiration in the body of the message. These will be ongoing, so you can jump in at any time!
We'll be starting you off with some digital ATC share ideas in our forum, but hopefully all you ATC artists will catch the bug and find ways to inspire each other with your own themes and challenges.
Happy creating! I look forward to seeing our gallery filled with your art!
