View Full Version : Naming Ceremony Instructions

THIS THREAD IS NOW CLOSED.
WE HAVE A NEW MISTRESS OF CEREMONIES FOR OUR QUIRK NAMING GAME! SHE HAS STARTED A NEW THREAD OF INFORMATION HERE. (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=722)
THANK YOU COLORFUL ENIGMATIC GRAYBONNIE FOR TAKING THIS ON.
AND THANK YOU CHEERY BLOSSOM MISHOU FOR GETTING THIS LAUNCHED AND OFF TO A WONDERFUL START!
Here are the instructions for the Naming Ceremony Process. Please read carefully and use this thread to ask questions or feel free to PM me.
There will be three parts to the process:
1) You choose a name for yourself (e.g. Grateful)
2) Someone in your group chooses a name for you (e.g. Butterfly)
3) Put the two together and you have your new name: Grateful Butterfly
Notice in the example above that each name will have two parts and it works well if there is one qualifying word like an adjective or an adverb followed by a noun. Below I will continue to refer to these parts as adjective and noun BUT keep in mind that, as always, there are no real rules here in Quirkland and you are free to choose any kind of word your quirky heart desires.
I have created a list of adjectives (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=525&cat=505) and a list of nouns (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=526&cat=505) and uploaded them to the gallery. You are not required to pick from this list, I only made it to be a quick resource in case someone gets stuck trying to think of a name.
K, here we go. Brace yourself! It’s long . . .
** ETA: Please upload all naming ceremony layouts to the "Co-Creation Projects" gallery **
__________________________________________________ __________
STEP 1:
A sign-up thread will be placed in this forum. We will all be divided into groups and each group will have space for 12 people. Post a message (something short like “sign me up”) and your name will be placed on the list in the order it appears in that thread. Once there are 12 people, that group closes and a new one starts.
STEP 2:
You will choose one part of your name. Contemplate and choose your name wisely. Once you have made your choice, create a 4x6 piece of art that reveals this part of your name. You will have 1 week to do this. Upload your creation to the galleries when you are done. (The deadlines will be outlined for you once your group closes. The first deadline will be one week after the day your group closes, the next deadline will be the following week, etc.)
STEP 3:
Now you will choose a name for another person in your group. The person you get will depend on the order of the sign-in sheet. Person #1 will choose a name for #2, and so on, with the last person choosing for #1. Be sure to give this some thought! If you don’t feel like you know that person well enough to come up with a name, then this will be the perfect excuse to get to know them better! It will be your responsibility to go in the gallery and find out what this person chose as the first part of their name so you can pick a word to go along with it. For example, if someone chose Grateful, you wouldn’t give them another adjective, you would give them a noun like Butterfly. DO NOT REVEAL TO THIS PERSON THE NAME YOU HAVE CHOSEN FOR THEM! Keep it a surprise until Step 4.
STEP 4:
Create a 4x6 piece of art revealing the name you have chosen for this other person. Do not include the first part of their name, only the one you chose for them. This artwork will be a gift and a blessing from you to that other person. Again you will have one week to do this. This time however, you will not upload as soon as you are done. You MUST wait until the specified day when everyone will upload simultaneously (i.e. within the same day) for a “big reveal” in the galleries.
STEP 5:
After the reveal when you have the second part of your name, you can now create a 4x6 piece of art revealing your full new name.
And that's it! Now that we have gone through the process with the first group I can honestly say from experience that this is really lots of fun! Check out the galleries and the naming ceremony forums to see and read about all the excitement we had!!

I am so ready for this. Can we all get matching tattoos for our tribe at the end too??

LOL Amy! I'm SO up for a tribal tatoo :D

05-10-2006, 11:37 PM
That is such a cool idea - each tribe could design their own tattoo and then use it on our art, like a trademark symbol, in group efforts
happyrobyn

So instead of a name, we could be a symbol ... like the artist formerly known as Prince!!

I guess my only question now would be, how obvious do we make each reveal via our layouts...I mean, if we choose the name STAR for ourselves...and we illustrate it with stars everywhere....can we also use the WORD star on the layout?...or actually tell others that we chose the word star in our comments...or should we just have people guess and tell them whether its a noun or an adjective? The reason I wondered this is because the person naming us needs to know whether to choose an noun or an adjective, you know?
Your directions are very good...i just had these few questions about the logistics of it all...wondered how specific or cryptic to make the layouts....lol
Fiddlette
05-11-2006, 10:46 PM
Mishou answered this:
There is no need whatsoever to be cryptic in your layout. I would say it's almost necessary to put the name right on it because how else will that other person know what you picked, right? Like you said, they need to know your part if they're gonna pick something that goes with it well.
Fiddlette
05-11-2006, 10:48 PM
She also says:
In the first two layouts it's totally okay to reveal the name. Like if you chose "grateful" then you make a piece of art that somehow illustrates gratefulness. KWIM?
The only thing that's a secret in all this is the name you choose for someone else. Like let's say you have me and you choose "Butterfly" for me. Then you make a layout that illustrates the name Butterfly, but you don't upload it until the specified day. So that I have no idea what you picked for me until I see it in the gallery.
So the last layout is when you can finally take both parts and put them together to create a layout that illustrates your whole name. e.g. Grateful Butterfly.

I uploaded mine here - Gypsy (http://www.digitalartquirks.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=542&cat=500&ppuser=49)
Nothing cryptic in this whatsoever - I provided a detailed key to the symbolism - I did this after I saw Robyn's and Nevermore's and thought - hmm, maybe I should clarify a little - LOL
Ok, ack! Is anybody else having trouble picking their name (I know, I know, we have a week, but it seriously took me over a year to pick a name for my website :p).
Oh, and can our first choice be only *one* word? Or can it be an acronym? (Hubby picks OK, as in "Off-Kilter" for me. Not that I want that one.) :D
Nevermore
05-12-2006, 12:49 AM
Big sigh, AmyK is not going to pick my other name (Happy Raven--the only thing that comes to my mind is Herb Tarlick. This will only resonate with old people who watched WKRP in Cincinnati). I know I can trust Larry to be kinder.
I, for one, am finding this entire naming ceremony more entertaining than anything I have done the past week including destroying my entire scrapping supply as I knew it. I believe that this would make a brilliant short documentary. Amy, what about doing a Walt Whitman kind of thing? You know, the child that goes out every morning and becomes the first thing he sees? You could try it for a few days and use the most interesting. For the sake of aesthetics you could discount dog poop or old cigarette butts if they happened to be the first thing to greet your eye (guess it depends on your neighbourhood).

That is one route Nevermore ... OR ... you could choose the Emily ****inson philoposhy:
I never saw a moor,
I never saw the sea;
Yet now I know how the heather looks,
And what a wave must be.
I never spoke with God,
Nor visited in Heaven;
Yet certain am I of the spot
As if the chart were given.
Okay, you have both inspired me and I will relax and let it come to me.

I'm loving this too - I think the hardest part, for me, is choosing the second part of the name for someone else.
At least I have some time to think about this
Okay, there is one question I have - can we choose how we put the name together? For instance, I've chosen Gypsy, and Amy will choose part 2 of the name - do I have to put it Gypsy 2 or can I have 2 Gypsy if it goes together better?
mishou
05-12-2006, 10:34 PM
Yes Kaza, you can absolutely decide how the name goes together. They don't have to be in the order they were chosen. It is YOUR name after all!
Thanks for asking, that was a very good question. Robyn asked me the same thing yesterday LOL

Michelle...I uploaded my quirk name layout to Group Projects gallery...if you don't want it there, I will move it...
I was just thinking that since this is DAQ Tribal Naming Ceremony ONE we could group all these together as a group project....
If everyone likes the idea....then move your layouts over there!!
If not, tell me to move mine to wherever y'all want it....
Whatever you all decide...I DO think they should be together somehow....
Kazadoodle

Christine: I know what you mean, these definitely need to all be in one place. I've asked for a seperate gallery but as we all know Maya's got bigger fish to fry right now LOL So yeah, the "co-creation projects" gallery actually sounds like a great place to put these. Especially since we don't have any other big group projects going on right now and the gallery is just sitting there empty!
I will go add a little note in the instructions saying to upload them to that gallery.

mishou
05-20-2006, 10:52 AM
senorita robina, sadly you are just going to have to cancel your trip. you have made a commitment to this group. if you're not here for the gala the bonds of friendship will be broken, the earth will fall off it's axis and life as we know it will be over.
K I'll stop now. Can you tell I have a propensity for sarcasm? LOL
Seriously Robyn, don't worry about it. Things like this happen. I've emailed you with some potential options for working around it. And for anyone else reading this, if you happen to find yourself in a similar situation don't freak out about it. I'm not gonna be the Naming Ceremony Nazi and banish you from the website! LOL We obviously would like everyone to try their best to get things done for the deadlines. That's the whole fun of this, you know?
But life is life and things come up. C'est la vie. We'll just find ways to work around it.

Hope you have a wonderful time! I am going away for three days (yes, I am a vacation maniac, rotfl!!!!!!!). Had to work today to be able to swing it but Joe and I are going to golf school Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Staying overnight, lessons all morning, a round of golf in the afternoon. Probably hot shower all evening, aspirin and bed as I can't help but think that this is a silly thing to do when I haven't picked up a club yet this year. But I am pretty thrilled. Only a few hundred more loads of wash to do and we will be set. I can try out my new neon pearl pink golf balls and a few new clubs. Max got me a gopher head driver cover for mother's day. I hate animal covers but I guess it goes with motherhood territory. In his favour, he got me a gorgeous pink golf shirt with huge mega buttons down the front and a cool pink windshirt that looks like a bowling shirt (tres in this year). Um, yeah, I have a pink thing when it comes to golf. You have to love a sport that not only encourages but actually honours bizarre clothing. Get out of town, I have managed to type another massive post. There is no way (with vacation and all) that I am going to make this kit target and I am not even going to go look at the next preview of it. I am hoping my tribe will join me in a dance outside of admin headquarters to peacefully, gracefully and quirkily petition them to give me this kit on the grounds that my few posts are probably a much much higher word count than many who hit the 500 mark. Quality, not quantity, eh? Rotflmbo, don't get mad anybody, just practising my speech.

I am so conflicted: packing shorts and long johns for golf school. It is freaking cold here (we are south of Mishou but it is still freaking cold). Bought the cutest little golf skirt, it will go so cunningly with huge honking purple goosebumps.
As for laundry, I am finally in luxury mode as in doing the spring stuff just in case we ever need it, doing new towels and stuff like that. I am a bit anal about laundry. I have no domestic skills whatsoever except doing laundry (once I cried aloud that I wished I was queen of the world and Max said, well, mom, you are the queen of laundry). I love laundry. In no other sphere of my life am I so confident, so able! I can take a cacophony of soiled, messed, inside out, stiff, sweaty, tangled horrible stuff and turn it into neatly folded piles and towers of the freshest, sweetest smelling softest swaddlings. I have CONTROL. I have POWER. I use my powers for GOOD. Basically, I just kick butt doing laundry. Hey hey Nicole, it is working! (she has me doing confidence stuff, working on a tryptych right now, hope to get it done tonight before we leave). I DO GOOD LAUNDRY. Whew! how exciting is this! Hmmm, what forum am I posting this in? I certainly hope it is news of relevance to the community. I would hate for anybody to miss this. It could have a profound effect on where they are at, where they are going. As in, to the laundry room.

I have done this one in part already. Found a totally cool washing machine mounted as the Stanley Cup. Now, as a Canajun, you can imagine that I was thrilled to my soul...I am not a hockey buff (shush, that is probably some kind of threat to National Security) but I appreciated the instant visual recognition afforded by tarting up the machine as a war trophy. Will have to get to it! (Where did I put it?)
But it has to come after two notes Max gave me last night. The first was a questionaire he designed. It said Do you love me and had a Yes and a No. He told me I had to check off one or the other. The second says I love you no mater what (okay, the spelling stinks but the guy just turned six and hey, he turns this five feet of bedrock curmudgeon into a quivering mess of emotion). Last Max story (for this post only, don't get too excited). I was reminded of it when Skyescrapz asked if she got points for using abysmal. First thing that popped into my head was wretched. I have many nicknames for Max. When he was quite little he asked about nicknames in general and I gave him a few examples and then I asked him if he knew what Mommy's special nickname for him was. He gazed up at me with his blue eyes to die for and said, "Wretched child". Suffice it to say I didn't get very far in explaining irony and/or sarcasm to him.

Oh my GOD, I just laughed so loud. That is funny. A tiny bit sad, but sooooooo funny. I thank you for sharing and I'm thrilled to have my word (abysmal) be the impetus (another good word, you must admit) for your storytelling.

Sounds good to me :) I think I've settled on a name, but a little extra time would be just fine :) Hope you have lots of fun Robyn!

Here are some rejects...poetic, celestial, enigmatic, sublime, divine!!! Do they fit me ... huh, huh??!! How about just plain HAPPY! LOL!
I don't mind waiting an extra week, although I'm on the edge of my seat to find out what my name will be! I still have to pick out a word for Kaza... need to PM that chicka! Have fun in the Bahamas, Robyn (I can't remember where you're going :D )
And Nevermore, who I prefer to call Raven, your "Wretched Child" tale is a classic! Made me laugh right out loud.

I just thought of a good quirk name for Nevermore since she says she has a problem getting passionate about certain subjects:
Rantin' Raven :p
OK just joking. It's about as cute as Wretched Child.

I get the honor of naming Raven and am open to suggestions. She's already rejected Happy Raven and I'm not sure Rantin' Raven will go over any better. I tried the poetic route, but all I could come up with was Craven Raven. :)
Better go back to the drawing board.

OMG you guys are killing me. Please please please. Don't know if I am laughing or crying but Craven Raven would SLAY me. When wretched Amy first suggested Happy Raven I hastily posted that the naming responsibility would lie with Donna/Larry and that I TRUSTED her. Donna, this is not just everyday trust, this is TRIBAL TRUST. We must steer away from Shaven Raven, Raven Haven, Raven Go Lucky , Blazin' Raven, Gazin' Raven, Grazin' Raven and the ilk. May I suggest colours? Plaid Raven is suggestive as is Motley Raven. Or textures? Asphalt Raven has a certain grittiness to it. Or music? Raven Sotto Voce or Raven Cacophonies albeit the latter rather than the former will strike a truer note. :::::)))))
What about Wretched Raven? But wouldn't you rather feel uplifted by your name? Oh, I know, and this one is SO clever: What about BLACK Raven? Ha ha! I slay me!!!

I have thought about a lot of potential candidates but it is not up to me...I have to let go and trust Donna (but the suspense is kind of getting to me). As for the second part of Fiddlette's name, I have been fussing and fretting with a thesauraus, a dictionary and free association and all I can say is thank goodness Robyn is at sea because I can sure use the extra week!
You and me both, Raven! I'm trying to dream up a name for our resident Gypsy (aka Kazadoodle), and I'm having trouble myself. Sheesh. It was hard enough to come up with my own name, and now I have the responsibility of someone else's identity on my shoulders. My brain is going to go on strike shortly.

How 'bout Raven Drops
It's far more enigmatic...with combined nuances of bird doo, rain drops and magikal candy...or maybe a magikal candy with essence of bird doo and sweetened with raindrops...or for the more base-minded the physical act of dropping to the earth, either in an old ladyish sense (help I've fallen and I can't get up! (must be that candy sonny boy gave me)) or a sudden descent in altitude....Raven Drops to the earth and then soars into the heavens.

How about Raven Swoons in dead faint, revived only by persistent whispering in her ear: they are not the ones who will be naming you, they are not the ones who will be naming you. Must be that candy sonny boy gave me!!! Now that generated a Raven Guffaws. Which leads me to Raven Croaks: a gentle allusion to my cackle which is how I laugh (huge belly cackle that reverbrates and makes people wince) or for the more literal minded, Raven is never more...

Which, of course, made me think of Raven Plops. Which made me sing "Raven plops keep falling on my head." Which made me think of Raven Ploppers... named after the wacky digi quick page name.
Poor Raven. You do realize that we adore you, right?

I thought I had it all worked out for Donna and then realised that I didn't - LOL.
I've been sitting here for a week now looking up the thesaurus (what is that anyhow - a literate dinosaur?) and finally, this morning, I found one I liked!
Now all I have to do is illustrate it - eek!

I have a query regarding the way the names are ordered.
I have just been looking through previous examples of what where done for peoples names. What each person chose for themselves and then what others did for them for their second name.
Now from what I see as how it works in the instructions up there we all get to choose our first name, right?
And then someone else -- the person before us on the list, gets to choose our second name, correct?
Ok now my query is this -- how come that many of the final names have ended up with the first name 2nd and the second name 1st? Have I done mine wrong by choosing what I have done for myself? ECLECTIC.
Just a tad confused here right now cause the name I have choosen for the person after me will only work if it is put 2nd to the name she has chosen for herself. This is the way I have understood the instructions.

In the end, it didn't matter which order the names went - just as long as you used a combination of the names that were given to you.
The reason we chose our own name first was because it's our name, it didn't mean that it had to go first - does that make sense?

I am one of the miscreants that named Fiddlette backwards. I guess the point is is that we do try, we really do, but we are a bunch of quirks and don't do rules very well. I think rules tend to sit like burrs under our saddles or peas under our mattresses or hairs up (whoa, stop, bad Raven).
Belles, I am certain that if you let you namer know it is integral to your name that your part of it goes first, they will accomodate you. We don't do rules but we do try to keep each other happy :)

Yes ... happy ... it's all about being HAPPY! LOL!
Actually I discussed this with Mishou a long time ago (she gave me my second quirk name which I use as my first name) - and whatever sounds best is how you should use it. So I am the Merry Messenger. Messenger Merry sounds kind of funny. Unless you use it in a language where nouns go before adjectives or something! LOL!

Ok thanks for responding to my confusion
School teacher in me was over-riding any quirkyness there I think.
School teacher = having to follow rules ;) and often being the one making the rules LOL. I would go super nuts in my class if I didn't have routines and rules for them to follow --- I shudder even thinking about it.

I think if you make it clear which part of the name you are giving to yourself, then it makes it easier for your namer to give you the right kind of word (adjective or noun)
